see, i saw the splash screens and thought, "why not just do a crawl?" they're so close in delivery style i don't see much of a difference. i guess the crawls are pretty old school now; the splashes are snappier.

Yea, both serve the same purpose. Just a different delivery. I would guess they would want to limit the crawl to the sage trilogies. But you never know. RJ's will be the first trilogy outside of the original saga so they may have one.

This is an interesting question. On one hand, the anthology films (both of them) had no crawls (even though Solo had a Blade Runner-esque wording.)

If Rian and Disney want to push Star Wars into new territory, I think they should boldly NOT use a crawl.

To me the crawl is Star Wars. If they're going to be telling episodic stories the crawl is a huge part of setting up the story.

I largely agree with this. It is one thing to experiment with other intro-forms in anthology movies, but for the serialized "main events" the crawl feels pertinent and stylistically important.

That said, I struggle to see what they would do in regards to episode numbers and titles past the Skywalker Saga. Would new series get a subtitle name to set them apart from the original nine? Something like:

    STAR WARS
    The Old Republic Saga

    Episode I
    Shadows Over Coruscant
    (Or whatever)

...possibly special editing the original nine for re-release by adding "Skywalker Saga" to the title?

    STAR WARS
    The Skywalker Saga

    Episode I
    The Phantom Menace

Or would episodes past RoS just keep adding numbers while episodes earlier in the timeline be given... I dunno, negative numbers or something?

It's a very tricky knot to solve, this...

I really don't think it's that big of a deal. While the music immediately gets you into it, tv shows and Marvel don't use opening text anymore to tell their stories.

Neither did TV shows or films back in 1977, and that's the whole point, really. The crawl sets Star Wars apart by adapting for major features a relic of 1930s-50s screen shows. Of course you can make films without a crawl, but it is a stylistic mark of Star Wars now.

It was interesting how LFL tweaked this concept for Clone Wars intros by having a "news reader" voice them, just like with news shorts in the past. Cool, stylistically conscious stuff.

I know that, I may not have stated it, but implied it. It's an artistic choice rather then a necessity.

i get that they're trying new things and i'm down with that. however, in the context of a trilogy or a larger story, i think the crawl can certainly be effective. it's very Star Wars too, and that's never a bad thing.

Will they have a crawl? I don't know.
Should they have a crawl? I don't know.
Would I want them to have a crawl? Yes

The anthology films still felt like Star Wars without the classic crawl, but I feel like a crawl is a part of the fabric of a Star Wars film. Assuming they are made I will see the films regardless.

It’s going to be really weird, no crawl, no Jedi, no lightsabers,.. do we even want a Star Wars film that’s gutted of everything we watch Star Wars for? It’ll be interesting to see, but if Rian is planning to make Star Wars his own? And not take into account the fans at all ( we are the ones who the moviebis made for) I just don’t get why the overhaul. I guess Rian thinks he owns Star Wars now or something.

Who said anything about no Jedi or lightsabers?
It's not wise to believe every thing you read on the internet.
