I watched it. There were a few good edits, but the way he handled the Luke stuff was really sloppy.

@Darth Basin The Greatest calling Kylo Ren a whiny Emo Baby and trying to cut every scene from the movie where he's emotionally conflicted is one example.

All right, let's give this a shot. I think that not only after TROS, but also my recent marathon, I've switched things up quite a bit.

    1. Return of the Jedi- The pinnacle of Star Wars, for me.

    2. The Force Awakens- Pure Star Wars joy, with interesting hooks (some of which eventually pay off, some don't)

    3. A New Hope- My favorite as a kid. A bit slower and more contemplative, but also a masterclass in worldbuilding and storytelling.

    4. The Rise of Skywalker- Maybe still high from novelty, but I do genuinely enjoy it. A deeply flawed film, but one that does a lot right.

    5. Rogue One- Still not at all a fan of the most of the pre-Scarif content, but the second half of this movie carries it. This is the Star Wars I grew up with in toys and video games, and the one I still love in board games.

    6. The Empire Strikes Back- I don't love the meat of this film. Dagobah/Asteroid Fields content just doesn't hold much charm for me anymore. Hoth and Bespin are both pretty great, though. I love the film (as, in a way, I love them all), but I often find it to be massively overrated by the fanbase, at least compared to my opinion.

    7. The Last Jedi- Again, I love the movie, but it also drags at some points. It has some huge high points (Throne Room, Crait, Ach-To) but a lot that really just doesn't work for me too. And here's the deal- the haters of this film were obnoxious, but so are the super fans of it. Seems like just about everybody contributed to the lessening of this film in my eyes.

    8. Solo- Really torn on this one. Solo is great, a ton of fun. At least, on an initial few watches. It just doesn't hold the rewatchability factor than so many of these other films have. In a way, it's like an entire film built of parts of the first few acts of Rogue One. I think films like Solo absolutely have a place in this fandom, and I'd love to see it get a sequel- but smaller releases on Disney Plus might be the way to go on moving forward.

    9. Revenge of the Sith- Such a strange movie, to me. I can never tell if its weird tone is intentional or not. Again, like Rogue One, I love the final act of this movie. But in this case, the opening isn't simply weak, but actively bad (in my opinion).

    10. The Phantom Menace- This is a weird one for me. I have a lot of nostalgia for this film, and I still enjoy it. Taken out of context, it's a pretty fun action/adventure sci fi, with a few periods that drag (as a kid I got real bored of pre-podrace Tatooine, and pretty much tuned out during Coruscant). But overall, it's a pretty solid standalone film- perhaps even more of a standalone film than either Rogue One or Solo were. There are times where I'll find myself rating this movie a lot higher than this, but on my most recent watch (chronological) I just found myself looking forward to the other movies to come.

    11. Attack of the Clones- I know I'm not being original here, but this... isn't my favorite. In fact, there are usually two consistencies whenever I make a list like this- ROTJ is at the top, and Clones is far at the very bottom. There is a lot about this movie that I really dislike, and even the point that it starts getting "good" (the Arena) doesn't always work for me. I do think it teases the idea of some pretty interesting politics and Jedi/Sith relations with Dooku, but the film never commits to these ideas. It's Star Wars, so I love it for what it is, but I can't help but be a bit frustrated by it.

    Here are mine:
    1. Last Jedi: I got into reading Nietzsche just before watching this and enjoyed observing the themes of deconstructionism and self actuation mentioned in his works (notably Beyond Good and Evil and Thus Spoke Zarathustra) in action. In addition, I enjoyed the philosophical and theological discussions about the themes and symbolism by various religious scholars.
    2. Phantom Menace: this is my first experience of Star Wars and without the Phantom Menace, I would never have encountered it.
    3. Rogue One: I love spy thrillers and the gritty aesthetic spoke to me on so many levels.
    4. Revenge of the Sith: my favourite of the prequel trilogy for its operatic scale and scope- Order 66 is like a literal Gotterdammerung from Wagner's Ring Cycle with Palpatine being like the trickster god Loge.
    5. A New Hope: that opening shot of Luke staring out at the two suns wistfully while on his moisture farm, wondering what the future has for him- whether there will be something new or whether today will be like so many others, a simulacrum of the day that came before spoke to me on so many levels.
    6. Attack of the Clones: Loved the politics and the foreshadowing of what Anakin would become, the depth of emotion at the loss of his mother not to mention the sequence on Geonosis was particularly impressive.
    7. The Return of the Jedi: I loved everything but there were logical inconsistencies that did not sit well on reflection- instead of spending so many resources on a second Death Star, something that had already proven to be vulnerable, why not adapt one's tactics and devote those resources to building a fleet of smaller, faster iterations of Star Destroyers that can cover a larger area? How are the Ewoks still alive when debris of something the size of a small moon is raining down on their planet?
    8. The Empire Strikes Back: it didn't resonate with me.
    9. The Force Awakens: a number of the decisions made here proved to be irksome and it felt more like a proof of concept instead of a cohesive story.
    10. The Rise of Skywalker: though parts were enjoyable there were parts that I did not like: the fact that it rushed through plot points so quickly without resolution made me feel like I was watching a series of flip books while firmly strapped to a gyroscope and spun repeatedly; the unsubtle dependency on nostalgia notable in its initial marketing; the fact that it made binary that which had been made nuanced in the previous film and others.

I’ve decided to revise my list and TROS is being demoted two places.

Saw it twice and I’ve barely thought about it since in the last few weeks, so it’s going right down.

Not even that bothered about seeing it again, of course I will at some point but it’s my least favourite, by far - both in terms of story and quality.

There are some qualities to it but to be honest I’m struggling to think of many other than visual effects and score.

    Such a disappointing end.

Really interested by how varied these all are. Personally mine goes like this:

    ESB
    RO
    ROTS
    ANH
    ROTJ
    AOTC
    TPM
    TLJ
    SOLO
    TFA
    TROS

I used to have TLJ last but even with its flaws, I enjoyed it on my last viewing.

Since I'm bored and have nothing else to do right now... I think I did a quick ranking immediately after seeing TROS in December (maybe not), but here it is as of today...

    1. Tie between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. Nothing will ever beat seeing the original in the cinema back in August '77. That film still holds the magic for me, 43 years later. And Empire, at least for me, is peak Star Wars. I really wish Disney/LFL would release the original versions, even if they are part of a bluray edition that has the "Special" editions from the 1990s.
    3. Return of the Jedi. I go back and forth with this one, as there is a love/hate relationship with it. But, in the end, it is, at least for me, the end. The end of the story arc. The end of the story.
    4. Rogue One. I really enjoy this film. I know there is a vocal section of the fandom that doesn't, and I'm okay with that. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But for me this film REALLY put the "Wars" into Star Wars. And in a good way. It was a solid war film, which is amazing considering all of the problems they had with the production.
    5. Revenge of the Sith. I really really really like this one. Best of the PT. I really can't complain. Just love this one.
    6. Then Phantom Menace. This is where it gets tricky. The next few films I could probably just all rank them as tied. But I won't. I really enjoy this film now. I enjoyed it when it was in the cinema, then around 2005 didn't. Didn't watch it again until about 2015. Since then It has improved with age. I love Darth Maul, Qui Gon, Obi Wan and of course Ian McBadass as Palpatine. Does it have issues? Sure, but it's a fun film so there ya go.
    7. Attack of the Clones. Yeah, this one gets crapped on a lot, but I do enjoy it.
    8. Solo. Another fun film. I'm not sure Alden was the right guy for Solo, but heck, I have no better ideas on the casting so there is that. A few of the thing felt forced. The "here is how he got his gun", "here is how he got the name Solo"... the dice... don't get me started on the dice. But I did have a good time and I still watch it so there is that.
    9. The Force Awakens. I REALLY really enjoyed this film when it came out. It was fun. Lots of cool seeds planted. But... it doesn't do it for me now. Its just way too derivative of A New Hope. Haven't watched it much since 2017. I did watch it once last December in the lead up to TROS but found myself not really paying attention to it.
    10. The Last Jedi. Yeah, this one is just not one I watch, even though I own the digital copy on iTunes. I actually didn't even rewatch it last December. Oh well.
    11. The Rise of Skywalker. This one has sunk like a rock. Typical with JJ, there is a high of euphoria in the immediate aftermath, but once you start thinking, the entire thing comes down like a house of cards. It's sunk so low I don't own it on iTunes and have no intention of purchasing it. Which is a sad commentary on the state of Star Wars, at least for me, in 2020.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents. I hope you all are staying safe in this crazy time we are living through.

Nice post. If you have time you should write an essay. I hope someone produces an in depth book on this film one day.
