Why Palpatine returning makes sense.

Although honestly makes you wonder what Ren was thinking when he suggested that he and Rey take down the old man together. But they didn't know that he had that card to play. I just love a good yarn.

 

Gotta say, I wasn't the biggest fan of bringing Palp back, but seeing Ian McDiarmid scowl "Skywalker" and chew scenery again is always a treat.

 

There probably are better ways they could have ended the saga, but I will always appreciate seeing Ian McDiarmid saying evil stuff. I will never not like hearing him say "DEW IT", and "The dark side is a path to many abilities some consider to be unnatural".

 

You can make sense of it if that’s your goal.

But writing so ambiguously and trying to leave all possibilities open in this manner just comes off as lazy. Lack of consequence. Lack of commitment to ideas.

It begins to feel like nothing matters.

 

It kind of reminds me of the time when in Steel Ball Run, alternate dimension Dio was introduced. Seriously, there should have only been one iteration of Dio in that instalment. I would personally have had the Emperor represented via the following:

• A statue made in his image psychometrists vision when they touch it
• A portrait on a wall or in a stained glass window
• Relics in jars: anything from bits of cloth to toenail clippings and cloned organs- think of the spivs who sell splinters of wood as pieces of the True Cross

In my idea of the Sith Eternal, dark side force wielders would essentially be viewed as prophets or living saints. Naturally, there would be contingencies if both Master and Apprentice were killed with clerics constantly looking for anyone who has 'potential'.

It's almost like the force is some kind of cavity filler that fills any need that you want it to.

 

There was that Jedi who stored his consciousness within a kyber crystal (forgotten his name), so he could live on after death. I still fail to see why they didn't bring Palpatine back through a way similar to this, nothing would've changed. Put Palpatine's consciousness in one of those holographic droids, and the droid can release electricity. Put magnetic devices within it, allowing it to manipulate and move objects and people like the modified force pikes in Rebels. Would've been just as effective, and would also explain why he desires a successor, without contradicting the Chosen One prophecy.

 

Well, apparently they did something similar to this without telling us in the movie. According to this page of the TROS novel, Palpatine transferred his spirit to a clone body.

 

I agree that the theory could be true. Palpatine could have cheated the death. However I still would have preferred to have a new villain. Moreover, I would never understand why Ray is the granddaughter of Palpatine. I could have understood a comeback from Palpatine but not a relation with Ray.

 

Definitely similar to Dark Empire.

 

Since the movie was released I've been suporting this idea. But the movie does not clarify that. I think makes much more sense than his body surviving the DSII explosion.

 

I don't know...that's just how I read the film.
I mean...to my mind, what I was looking at was Palps hooked up to a biological 3D printer that wasn't fully done printing him yet.

I thought he looked familiar. I swear the rig he is attached to is pretty similar to that of Ommin in Tales of The Jedi. Is this a deliberate choice or purely coincidental?

 

I have never read a comic or a book of Star Wars, only some annuals. What is that devide around Palpatine's head?

 

Ah, I feared this may happen. Tales of The Jedi was a comic series published by Dark Horse thousands of years before the main series and was written to add depth to the setting. Think fantasy films/series like Krull, Conan and Warlord of Mars with a Star Wars pastiche and you are there. Ommin was a dark side warlord who venerated the ancient Sith Freedon Nadd. The device around his head in the picture is a part of an artificial exoskeleton and life support system.

Of course, this and other stories like this was removed from canon which is a damn shame.

With regards to the device around Palpatine's head in this series. It may be that this serves a similar function to that of the life support machine Ommin used.

 

Got it. I knew there were some prequels but I thought they were mainly in the video games. I would like to read something about Palpatine's past. Why he chose the dark side and his past in general.

 

I would suggest the novel Darth Plagueis but sadly that is not canon. Having said this, the producers of Star Wars may use aspects of material removed from canon. Good book either way.

 

Does it really matter if he is a clone or not if he still has the spirit of the palpatine we allready know? And doesn't this just further clarify what the movie allready alluded to? I thought someone said "ancient sith magic, cloning..." or something like that when the resistance are talking about his return.

 

I've always liked the way that Star Wars used cloning. It was never about bringing people back from the dead or creating "evil twin" confusion, it was about using cloning to create an army, which is a more unique concept with interesting ethical ramifications.

Using cloning to bring back a dead villain just feels like a really cheap move. Also it's like, what now? Can't they just clone him again? How is there any real victory? Or are we supposed to just assume Rey destroyed his essence for good this time?

 

It certainly is. I was sick of its overuse in marvel comics. As for the essence thing. Maybe she swallowed his essence before it could overwhelm her. It sounds terrible but that's the only way I can describe it.
