    I wanted to take the theme of the tragic but Messianic anti-hero from the Star Wars saga (i.e., Anakin Skywalker) and spin it to talk about the psychological burdens of the American high school experience.

    So here's a simple story involving a focused high school wrestler named Van and the odd news of a strange murder in a small American town outside Seattle, Washington, which compels him to become a true diplomat of school spirit.

    ====

    Van was a diligent A student and a hard-working wrestler in his junior year of high school in Wheaton High, located just outside Seattle, Washington. Van was a medium-built U.S. citizen of Turkish descent; he was 5'6" and was considered the most promising wrestler for his high school team when the current year's batch of seniors graduated. Van's team, the Wheaton Wookies, was ranked #1 in the state, but after the talented seniors left, Van would have to fill their shoes (there were a few other non-senior wrestlers on the team who showed potential and could help Van keep the flag of their high school waving high).

    Van woke up every day at 5 a.m. to run about 3 miles before his first Wheaton class started (at 7 a.m) --- A.P. English with Mr. Dido. Van enjoyed excelling in his schoolwork, but his real passion was wrestling. Van believed the world revolved around wrestling, and his coach, Mr. Ridley, was very impressed with Van's sense of high school spirit and work ethic. Nothing gave Van as much personal satisfaction as the experience of training and honing his wrestling skills. Van believed the Wookies would win the state title easily this year, but in the following year (his senior year), he would have to really shine and lead the team to continued glories.

    Van decided to start working for the school newspaper in his senior year, so people would not bother him too much about him spending too much time wrestling. His mother approved, and he found the school newspaper to be an adequate side-project so he didn't become psychologically obsessed with wrestling. The Wookies did indeed win the Washington state title during Van's junior year and were ranked #3 in the state going into Van's senior year. Van started out with a flourish and led the Wookies to an early upset over the #2 ranked team in the state and a crushing defeat of the #4 ranked team in the state; Van was the top-ranked wrestler on the Wookies, and his outstanding efforts put the Wookies at the #2 state ranking.

    Van was happily working on the school newspaper in November, preparing for the state title game against the #1 ranked Blaisfield Demons. High school athletics reporters called Van and his Wookies the surprise delight of this year's season and claimed Van had successfully floated the Wookies out of the leering shadow of the powerhouse seniors who carried the team to their state title the previous year. Everything was going well, and Van was considering asking the Wheaton High school newspaper (The Beacon) editor (Shelbye Davidson) out on a date. However, that November afternoon, Shelbye stormed into the Beacon meeting and announced to the group the news of the murder of a Wheaton 'bully' named Dan.

    Van discovered that the previous night, a well-known Wheaton bully, Dan (a blonde brute who always picked on nerds on the after-school bus), was found shot in the heart; his body was left in the dumpster behind the high school's west wing. Shelbye wanted Van to cover the story, since Van was a popular and prominent wrestler for the Wookies. Van took up the assignment but wondered if it would detract undue attention from his singular focus on his wrestling team. Van asked his mother what he should do, and his mom told him to follow his heart, keep his team spirits high, and work as hard as was appropriate on the 'Dan-bully murder story.'

    Van prepared his excellent essay on the Dan-bully murder story, and Shelbye loved it so much, she started calling him the 'Wheaton Jedi.' The story helped Van cement Van's status as a true Wookie 'leader,' and it started out like this:

    "How can the Wookies rise out of the shadow of the Dan murder? Dan was a well-known Wheaton bully, and everyone is wondering who wanted to murder him. Was it a nerd Dan picked on? Was it a friend who held a secret grudge? Was it a 'vigilante' who wanted to end Dan's bullying? What is certain is that our high school will have to find the right demoralization-cure (perhaps the Wookies' run at the wrestling state title this year!) to remind us that glory is better than crime!"
