I really hope your not stupid... Darth Maul killed Qui Gon Jin, therefore Obi Wan wanted revenge which means Obi Wan broke the Jedi Code...

    *you're

    And it isn't stupid.

To answer the original question, regardless of what the objective was, the original duel between Maul and Obi-Wan just happened to turn out that way. Bear in mind that Maul bested a Jedi Master. Obi-Wan was only an apprentice, and Maul was a Sith Lord. Obi-Wan's only chance at escape may have been to attempt killing Maul (who we might assume was defeated by Obi-Wan only because he was worn down after his duel with Qui-Gon).

Obi-Wan is not a vengeful character, and he never was. He even looked past the fact that Maul murdered the love of his life. I mean...he just doesn't have a hateful bone in his body. I think he killed (or rather attempted to kill) Maul only because he felt that no other option might ensure his survival

Yes, in that moment Obi-Wan did seek vengeance, which whilst dangerous, did not break the Jedi Code. The Jedi are understanding, Yoda never punished Anakin for slaughtering the Tusken Raider village. Yoda remarks in TCW that he once was a brash and impulsive knight, like Anakin.
Revenge is frowned upon by the Jedi Order, as it is one of many steps towards beginning your descent down the dark side, but the Jedi do not view the world in black and white. They understand exceptions must be made.

It would be different if Obi-Wan for example travelled half the galaxy for three days hunting down Maul, in order to kill him.

That's dangerous thinking! Killing people just because they are deemed too powerful to be kept alive? Should a Jedi have the right to make that judgement? Surely that kind of thinking is a path to the dark side!

    1. If he wouldn't have Maul would have killed him. 2. Revenge for killing his master. It is canon that Obi-Wan used a bit of the Dark side to defeat Maul, and it is one of his biggest regrets.

Perhaps the question is framed incorrectly. It is not whether Obi-Wan should have killed him that is the issue but what Maul would have done if he was spared.

He cut off Anakin's legs, Maul's legs...what can I say other than this guy just likes cutting off peoples legs?...

Or get this: it was practice for when he had to do it to Anakin as well.

Jokes aside, I think that capturing him was simply not possible. He knew first hand how cunning Maul was as he just witnessed his masters death. Maul had to be ended, there was no other escape. In the back of his mind he knew what had to be done, in spite of how hard he knew it would be. Maul was an assassin, and there's no way that he could afford being hunted by him in the near future, putting the people he loved in danger once more. When given the slightest opening of opportunity, he took it with a sense of calmness and focus in his mind.

I would say that obi-wan was seeking revenge for what maul did to qui-gon, but as time went on he was patient with him. He waited until he new it was mauls time to go. Maul was also ruthless in killing qui-gon and obi-wan clearly had a strong friendship with qui-gon so I would say obi-wan had no choice but the correct one (as many have said he would not have had many choices).

Darth Maul just keeps coming back! When we see him in the Clone Wars, he is delusional and crazy. He gains an apprentice, Savage, who is killed, and rules Mandalore for a while. He is seen AGAIN in Rebels as well! Everyone who watched Rebels knows what happened to him. He is like that spider who just doesn’t die no matter how much you hit it, well you get the idea... He is still one of my favorite characters in SW and he was quite a powerful sith too.
