After watching Solo today for umpteenth time I wondered what you all though about the Kessel run, did it live up to expectations?

I'm not talking about the film overall just the Kessel run itself. Having not taken much interest in EU/Legends, I'd only went with what Han said about it in ANH and TFA so I really didn't have any expectations for it.

I did enjoy the Kessel run and I also liked how they explained the whole parsec being distance rather than speed. Also seeing the Falcon change from Lando's custom built restoration ride to a wreck worse than what we see in ANH was great to see.

Here is a video of how they filmed this sequence.

I had no idea what the Kessel Run was going to be so I had no expectations. So I was neither disappointed nor surprised nor demanding. It was an good scene.

    Thanks for the video.

I didn't even know that all that rocks were carbon, great nod to the carbonite seeing in TESB.

Yes that was a nice inclusion, I didn't notice it on first viewing of SOLO but picked up on it the second time. It was when the TIE fighter pilot freezes when the carbon smashes through the window that I thought it could be carbonite.

In the opening scene to ANH, 3PO mentions “the spice mines of Kessel”. Later, Luke relays that he believed his father was “a navigator on a spice freighter”. So, in this far away galaxy, “spice” is some sort of valuable commodity that gets extracted and delivered - or ‘run’. The Millennium Falcon is introduced to us as a freighter. So when Han mentions “the Kessel run”, the implication was always that it was some famous shipping lane that his freighter had run cargo from once upon a time.

The cool thing I think Solo brought to the idea was the The Akkadese Maelstrom (ported over from Legends I guess). The premise that this important mining world effectively had only one way in or out puts more focus on the importance of a ship’s speed and maneuverability. So when Han brags about it to O.B., his boast and old Ben’s visual skepticism, make more sense. There’s a natural limiter there. His claim really shouldn’t be possible. Good stuff that.

Head canon though: I never thought that Han was the one who made the run. It felt to me like it was a feat someone else managed with that ship at some point in the past when it was at its peak. The Falcon that Han had was one that was past its prime and not what it used to be. That was its one claim-to-fame and now it was over-the-hill - scraping along. Meh, oh wells.

I don't think the Kessel Run counts because he cut half of it. That's like racing in nascar and cutting through the infield.

The “Kessel Run” isn’t a race, it’s a delivery route. If it takes most pizza drivers 30 minutes to get cross town, but your buddy Han can do it in 15, then that’s what counts. That he happened to have run a bunch of red lights, went up on the sidewalk, and through a few people’s front lawns to do it doesn’t change that.

The Kessel Run shows that although the Falcon took a shortcut, it was an extremely dangerous shortcut that no other ship or pilot could attempt and survive.

I thought it was a great part of the movie. It made me feel like how the TIE Fighter attack scene made audiences feel in 1977. It was a thrilling scene with some cool flying maneuvers. I loved the soundtrack as well, mixing in tons of music from the original films as well as Han and Chewie’s themes from this movie.

I also liked how it still kept some ambiguity with Han’s line about rounding down.

I did like the rounding down line, changing to less than 12 in ANH and then back to 12 in TFA. I also liked the Lando/Han "I hate you, I Know".

For me that's the sign of a great Star Wars film, just like the OT I can happily watch Solo, TFA, and R1 over and over again without tiring of them. Solo just captured that OT feeling!

The music played a huge part in that especially using the music from TESB asteroid in the Kessel run.

I always thought that Kessel Run was a race rather than a delivery route - in fact, I think the official site described it in race-like terms when people kept asking why it is in parsecs. So it wasn't what I expected. But it was still good. And it still answered the parsec question. :D

It was a great way to explain the paresec question, in fact SOLO had explanations throughout the film.

I liked how they explained the Falcon having three landing legs as it did in ANH, to be honest they could have just had Lando's Falcon having 3 legs to begin with and then having 5 in TESB as an upgrade, I'd always just assumed it was that way to begin with.

Great thread.....I missed all this, hated being away from the Cantina for a bit.

Anyway, just how many parsecs EXACTLY did Han do the Kessel Run?

Han: "I just did the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs...."
    Chewie: " RAWWWARAARAAA"
Han: "Not if you round down, buddy"

So what was it? 12.1....12.2.....12.4??? We may never know....

I felt like the run should have definitely been a part of that story, and was VERY happy to have had it shown and explained as it was something that we were first introduced to with Han in '77 as something that he was "famous" for...it was a part of his persona, like the dice, and it's inclusion was perfect IMO...
