I stumbled upon this article and thought it would make for great conversation here:

Ewoks Are the Most Tactically Advanced Fighting Force in Star Wars

    https://www.wired.com/story/ewoks-star-wars-tactics-endor-moon/

"The Empire can project immense power on both the land and in space to defend its imperial interests. But they’re also horrible at it."

"Our friends in the Imperial Army and Navy never met a problem they couldn’t solve with a bold frontal assault. There is no subtlety in Imperial tactics; just keep throwing Stormtroopers and Tie fighters at the problem until it is no longer a problem. They don’t bother to use indirect fire or even coordinate close air support at a tactical level. Their synchronization of the battlespace boils down to “is everyone on line and shooting in the generally same direction?” It’s laughable."

"The Rebel Alliance is even worse. They have virtually zero ground game, minus some special ops units here and there."

"As others have pointed out, the Ewoks seem to portray your garden variety insurgent or guerrilla force; George Lucas himself has said that he drew inspiration from the Vietnam War. But the Ewoks are also the only fighters in all of Star Wars to portray multi-domain operations. They force their enemies to respond to a variety of threats simultaneously, throwing them off balance and allowing the Ewoks to seize the initiative."

"In this single engagement, the Ewoks manage to overwhelm and completely defeat a technologically superior force simply by using conventional military tactics and the principles of multi-domain operations. Through the synchronization of direct and indirect fire, close air support, combat engineer principles, deception, psychological operations, and massing their forces at the key point in time and space, the Ewoks demonstrate their proficiency in land warfare. Other Star Wars universe forces—the Gungans and the Galactic Army of the Republic in particular—show their own flashes of tactical brilliance, but none of them come close to matching the Ewoks in their ability to coordinate the effects of combat power."

The article breaks down the battle tactics used by the Ewoks in more depth. I couldn't help wanting to talk about it after reading.

Oh, I wish I didn't read that. Now RotJ feels like a very stupid movie.

There are not a force but very cute clever things, and people like me think their place is in a kid movie and distracted from the actual fight betwen stormtroopers and Rebels... Still quite a weak plot insert, but otherwise, out of context I still kind of like them :)

They were a great force because the battle happened on their turf & they took full advantage of the landscape.

I dislike the Portayal of the Battle of Endor.
But not because of the Ewoks, mainly because of the Empire's Forces.
Ewoks might be crude and awkward and more cute than dangerous...but thats how it is, and I'm finally ok with that (took me a few Years).

I don’t hate Ewoks. I agree that they are cunning warriors, and I like how they used their scrappy abilities to help take down the Empire.

But I can’t deny that they went a little too far in making them primitive and cutesy. I mean, you could have a primitive society without turning them into, well, teddy bears.

Their role in the final battle was kinda ridiculous but I don't hate them and don't feel they ruined the film or anything.

Being cute and short doesn't mean they actually have to be completely useless in a battle and especially in their own territory.

Don’t get me wrong, Ewoks are a great species, a very smart one at that. However, their battle methods depend on their natural environment of Endor. They used logs to make the At-ST’s fall or used traps to destroy vehicles and kill imperial troops. However, in just ordinary battle, spears are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid. (Anybody see what I did there) However, the only time we see these little bears are in ROTJ, where they seem to help the Rebel Alliance destroy the shield generator on Endor. And of course god threepio! In all, they don’t have the most advanced fighting methods, per-say, but quite a smart one non-the-less!

That is an interesting argument. They were able to defeat a technelogically superior force.

there was this comic or short story or something that i read a while back in the viewpoint of a stormtrooper who survived endor. And he was like, "those ewoks, they looked cute, but they were ferocious! They would shoot their arrows into the ****** of your armor, and their arrows had neurotoxins that would stop your heart in a minute. They killed many of my friends." Or something like that.

I mean... smashing an AT-AT with logs was a smart ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
On a serious note, I do think they were smarter than both the Rebels and the Empire, but I wouldn't go so far to say that they were the MOST tactically advanced.

With all due respect, I don’t think the Ewok tactical leadership would have been able to coordinate a very effective assault on either of the Deathstars. Call me cynical :D

The Ewoks are literally the Vietnamese of the Star Wars universe. They managed to defeat a technologically more advanced and superior force through low-tech solutions in terrain they were more familar with. That is how the Ewoks were written, and why they appear in Star Wars. To demonstrate that victory can be achieved over seemingly "impossible" odds.

I always saw it as the Empire were so arrogant that they knew the Ewok were there on the forest moon but just dismissed them as so primitive that they didn't bother to plan for them. I don't think they got pass the "cute teddies" stage. They vastly underestimated their species.

The Ewoks were definitely tactically advanced, but not the most technologically advanced. A saber or staff or blaster on average would be more deadly than a log. But we all love those Ewoks. :)
