    1. The Last Crusade
The Graal (Grail) Legend is one of the most exciting treasure huntd of all time. Originally Sir Perzival (Percival) finds it, but it was changed to Galahad, the Son of Lancelot. The Queste del Sainte Graal is the ultimate artifact hunt: the Cup of Christ. I love how Spielberg and GL modernized the quest.

Little tid bit, the cup would have been alabaster because a rich man provided the utensils and food at the Last Supper, “10He answered, “When you enter the city, a man carrying a jug of water will meet you. Follow him to the house he enters,11and say to the owner of that house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?’ 12And he will show you a large upper room, already furnished. Make preparations there.”” (Luke 22:10-12)

    2. Raiders of the Lost Ark
The battle for the Ark of the Covenant is second only to the Holy Chalice. Few are aware that we Christians think of it because its not just old testsment, but in last book of The New Testament:

“Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant. And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.” (Revelation 11:19)

I don’t like either Crystal Skull or Temple Doom.

My attempt at objectively (lol!) ranking the Indy films based on their quality, or whatever:

    1. Raiders of the Lost Ark (9/10)
    2. Last Crusade (7/10)
    3. Temple of Doom (7/10)
    4. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (5/10)

    My personal preference:

    1. Temple of Doom (11/10)
Despite the cringy racism and cultural appropriation thing, I REALLY love this one. This is the adventure movie that suits my story taste the most
    2. Raiders of the Lost Ark (10/10)
While being somewhat slow in certain segments, I love this to bits :D
    3. Last Crusade (6/10)
Despite being a grail quest, which should suit me perfectly, I struggle to connect with this movie for some reason. Don't know why
    4. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (3/10)
Blargh! No more stupid friggin' Däniken plots, please! As a New Age researcher/religionologist, I just have had enough of this stuff :p

If I had to wager the reason this didn't click, considering that you're preference is for Doom, and then Ark, I'm betting it has to do with the core narrative structure radically shifting from a pure pulp style to one of a partially character driven narrative that examines the psychology of our protagonist through a rather Freudian (which, of course, doesn't mean just "sexual") approach.

If what you love is the pulp, this is a bit too meaty.

I have a similar style of relationship with it. It's a fantastic movie, a ton of fun, and definitely set the bar for action-adventure movies going forward (so many follow this template now), but It's not pure pulp, and I'm not terribly interested in Indy being more personally known to me. I'm quite good with him being just a serial pulp figure. Not really that big of a deal, but yeah...I feel ya.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

1: The Last Crusade. We have Sean Connery and I really liked the plot related to the Graal.
2: Riders of the Lost Ark. A great theory about what was the Ark of the Covenant.
3: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Well, it could be better but at least there are some nice scenes.
4: The Temple of Doom. Sorry but I didn't like this movie. The story of Shiva and the hearts taken with a hand, with a person still alive after that.

    The Last Crusade
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    The Temple of Doom
    Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

I seem to be the only one that doesn't hate KOTCS. I find it the weakest in the franchise but don't think it's terrible like many make it seem. Temple of Doom is the one I kinda disliked for a long time but love it now.

As far as ratings, KOTCS is lowest at 7/10 with Temple of Doom at 8/10 while Last Crusade and Raiders both get 9.5/10's

I find it interesting with all but the second movie had Indiana simply stayed home the bad guys would still all die.

It's one of the reasons I like TOD, Indy in a way actually directly defeats the main villain for once whereas in the others they kill themselves.

I remember liking the Young Indy series as well but haven't seen it in a long time. Here's a pic of my small Indy collection.

I'm cautiously optimistic for Dial Of Destiny. It'll be interesting to see where it'll rank after it's out in just two months.

I'm currently doing a rewatching of the films before seeing 5 in the theater tonight, and my ranking order remains the same, the scores have changed quite a bit! Basically, Raiders have fallen and Crusade risen in my personal preference list. The three first ones now goes something like this:

    1. Temple of Doom (11/10)
    2. Raiders of the Lost Ark (8/10)
    3. Last Crusade (7/10)
    4. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (3/10)

I really appreciate Crusade a whole lot more this time around: While the third act drags a bit, it is very well written, especially the first act. It is also very funny, and Sean Connery is on great form in this one! He has great comedic timing and charm, that one :)

Raides, I find, wobbles a bit in quality. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something off at times. Well, the overdub is quite scetchy, and as awesome as the character of Marion Ravenwood is, Karen Allen is not very good in the movie...

Oh well, I'll watch Crystyal Skull now, before it is Dial of Destiny tonight, which I am very much looking forward to :D

    [Edit]
As for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, I still don’t like it much. In addition to the already very dated and wonky CGI in Crystal Skull, there’s something boringly Michael Bay-esque in the stupid spectacle of this movie. Furthermore, as the McGuffin is nothing but pseudo-science nonsense, the film feels much less grounded and relevant than the previous three. The contexts for Crystal Skull are one long-since-debunked hoax after another, which helps the movie none at all.

    [Edit 2]
After seeing DoD once, I add it to my appreciation list thusly:

    1. Temple of Doom (11/10)
    2. Raiders of the Lost Ark (8/10)
    3. Last Crusade (7/10)
    4. Dial of Destiny (7/10)
    5. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (3/10)
