If you slow down the video you can see a blaster bolt being fired a split second before Han shoots. So Han did in fact not shoot first.

I read something in a piece of (non-SW) fiction recently that made me think of the Han-Greedo scene. Apparently, (according to a fiction thing), the gunslinger stare-down/fast-draw duel thingy in the Wild West (i.e. probably not true) really about forcing your opponent to draw-&-fire first for legal reasons. Thing was that shooting someone dead was only considered murder if you fired the first shot, otherwise it was considered self-defense (which also makes sense why these duels tends to be out in the open in Western movies and the like; for the sake of witnesses to confirm who drew first). So, if we regard the Han-Greedo confrontation in light of this, it makes sense that Han shoots after Greedo, holding off so as to avoid drawing legal attention. Perhaps George Lucas felt Han would be wiser if he shot last as the witnesses in the Cantina would shrug the incidence off, declaring Han in the right to defend himself since Greedo shot first, and then not bother with calling in the lawmen of Mos Eisley?

Idunno, this was probably not a relevant observation but I found it an interesting thought, at least.

(For the record, Han obviously shot first and ought to always have shot first in the scene :p )

Regardless of who shot first, perhaps the question would be what would have happened if Han did not shoot Gredo at all.

This argument has, to my mind, almost always been misphrased. Because in the original version Greedo didn't shoot at all.

    Han shot solo.

Most people will already know everything that I will be mentioning here on this post so yeah..,

originally, in 1977, Han had shot first killing Greedo. You can slow down the scene and you will find that Han does in fact shoot first. But really, it doesn’t matter because Han was in a tight spot here. He could have died or been captured so killing Greedo got him out of that one as he is given another chance from Jaba personally. Anyway, during the “remastered” version of ANH later on, most of us know what happened. One word, Maclunkey. In this scene, im pretty sure that they both shoot at the same time, but Han moves his head as Greedo’s shot misses and Han shoots Greedo in the head, killing him. Of course we also get Maclunkey. This solved the controversy between who shot first. But, originally, Han shot first. I like it better when they both shoot just because that's just me.

Of course han shoots first, just watch solo, he shoots becket right away. He was still young and beginning his true life of crime, so it makes sense, Han shoots first. Greedos a green little piece of blast who thinks he got the drop on han.

The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special also confirms that Han (or the Hans ;)) shot first!

Seriously, it is baffling why George Lucas claims otherwise. Even when he keeps on making changes to the original Only Han Shoots scene.

I’m oddly kind of in the Harrison Ford stance of “does it really matter?” I think part of that for me is that I was too young to remember Han shooting first (or actually maybe never knew until later. We had the 3 vhs box set, which i don’t remember what version that one is). The way I often see it is that, regardless of which shot actually fires first, Han still had his blaster drawn and ready, fully intending to kill Greedo, maybe unless Greedo walked away for whatever reason. It has the feel of a western quickdraw to me, and still gives that impression that Han will kill without remorse if he needs to.

The main reason I don’t like the addition of Greedo’s shot? The visual of the shot and Han “dodging” are just maclunky.

If I wasnt so damn busy or lazy, I'd get the original tapes from the attic, plug the vcr and and show Han originally did shoot first.
Besides why would Han apologize for being shot at...."Sorry for the mess". If Greedo fired first.. "his fault" would have sufficed.
