Partly because I'm staggered there isn't one already and partly to fulfil the short-term needs of our own @DailyPlunge, let's kick this off...

So, Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron movie is set for 2023 release. We know pretty much nothing beyond director and title, so what are you hoping for?
    ...A completely stand-alone movie?
...A cameo or link to character(s) from previous films? (Wedge? Poe? ...Dack! :D)
    ...What time period?
...New ships or just good old T-65B's and Y-Wings?

    Talk to me Cantina!

I'm just posting to express that I have no strong feelings about it one way or the other...

Okay. I'll say a bit more about that!

Firstly, I think it could either be about Wedge OR about Poe, and it would be pretty much the same series either way. I originally used to think that the point of the OT being a sort of 'remake' of the OT was so that Disney could tell ongoing stories in an OT style universe without having to do lots of OT gap-filling tales (where we already know what the ultimate conclusion would be). But now it seems that's all we are getting for the time-being, and whether it centres on Wedge set to the backdrop of the conflict between the Rebels and the dark forces of the Empire, or stars Poe set to the backdrop of the conflict between the Resistance and the dark forces of the First Order, the two ideas would be interchangeable and tell pretty much exactly the same story.

With that in mind though, If they're going to do gap-filling, I'd rather it take place in and around the events of the ST, and it seems more likely to me that they'd do that to provide a star vehicle for Oscar Isaac as Poe than find a new actor to play a young Wedge (although 'old' Wedge could feature in a Poe story of course).

More than that though, I'd rather it forged ahead into a new era beyond the events of the ST with an all new cast, but I think that is highly unlikely with a film like this one. It would have to mark the start of an all new conflict, and I don't see this being the film to do that.

Here's the blurb from the Disney investors thingy:
"The story will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy."

So, probably no characters we already know (besides possible cameos) and it sounds like it will take place post TRoS.

Oh cool! So basically the complete opposite of what I suspected it might be and potentially everything I hoped it would be!

Now don't I look like an idiot?! (don't answer that!)

I suppose we'll start learning more about this project after Celebration. If it's set after TROS it would be a huge hint about future film projects.

Well, it's definitely got more interesting to me now and I've already had some thoughts.

Perhaps as the movies move forward into this new era, any new conflict could begin as a slow burner instead of throwing us into the deep end of seeing a new regime rising to power. Sort of the opposite of the ST.

Instead of a trilogy, it could be a series of self-contained movies about different characters but set to the backdrop of a new rising conflict in the galaxy, perhaps building up to a climatic confrontation (and as I write I realise this is perhaps starting to sound somewhat like some other well-known franchise...!)

Or, along similar lines, whereas in the past we have had a main trilogy around which we then have 'side-stories' told in comics, books and TV shows, maybe this time around we have a number of the side stories told in movies before we get a central trilogy which connects it all together (perhaps depicting events which were happening concurrently with the previous movies). Or how about saving THAT story just for a TV series...?

I just hope we get some cool ship battles. Like the one we got in ROTJ. New ships and old ships would make the show great because the nostalgia of the old ships and the fresh feel of the new ones.

I hope the cast is brand new. Star Wars needs to stop relying on old characters, plus it makes the universe feel small

So, the official by-line description for Rogue Squadron is:

The story will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing,
high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.

So, and I realise some people have asked this outside of the Cantina, but not here yet... [pedant alert all the same]... if it's a post-TROS movie, then why does the official logo carry an OT era T-65B X-wing silhouette and not an ST style T-70?

Answers on a gundark to the usual address.
