Why does anyone care? Lucas' ex-wife didn't like the prequels or the sequels. Those videos are just embarrassing. They're toxic tabloid nonsense.

Seems like a pretty classless and bitter move, to me.

She's honest and licks no boots!! Real American woman right there. Love it when a person is a straight shooter. Best is, she tells 'em to "call me" so she can clue them in!!! Hahahahahhhhh - And what can they say to her? That she DOESN'T know what she's talking about? Hahahahahhhhh - That she is ignorant? Hahahahahhhhh - Holy crap if any person is ENTITLED to a Star Wars SAGA opinion, her name is Marcia 'I Won An Oscar For Making This Space Stuff Work' Lucas. Hahahahahhhhh - I love her. :)

Her opinion is different; therefore, it is obviously less valid because it goes against the "ST is infallible" narrative that dominates online discussion.:p Jokes aside: I learned the truth about her story contributions over 20 years ago and from that moment on, I went all in on whatever she has to say about the SAGA / film editing. I could list all of the little things that she insisted upon, like Leia's kiss before the chasm cross.... but what would be the point? There's a massive book out that explains ALL of it.

    TL;DR
Marcia Lucas has more Star Wars swag than Abrams, Kennedy & Disney combined.

They absolutely are. I am only ever reminded of them via msg boards & basket weaving forums. Having said that, I now wonder why Variety would go so far out of the way to interview a woman self-removed from the SAGA who is even less beholden to the new owner's script? What does Variety hope to gain from this? What's the point of flaunting Marcia's opinion that 99.9% of online Star Wars fans do not agree with? Will it sell more copies/ generate MORE clicks? I doubt it. I mean, if they hadn't kicked the sleeping dog, this thread wouldn't even be here.

Absolutely based and red pilled, to me....

The force is in balance today, +1 for all Cantina patrons.

    Let the down votes begin.

    :D

They didn't interview her. Some random guy tweeted out a portion of the book and it went viral because Star Wars faux outrage merchants (like the videos above) need it to keep the outrage going.

Yes, it will generate web traffic. It's the same reason Variety covered the Hidalgo thing. There's very little "is this something notable to cover" discussion anymore in journalism. The only question is "will this generate clicks?"

You guys are just the best. I honestly thought that I would have seen people here praising her for her comments (like I have seen some doing). But I am heartened to see that people on here at least aren't going to praise for what comes across as bitter/un professional/childish comments (no matter your opinion of the ST or PT).

I took a look at her quote. And her comments (like most of the detractions on the ST) stem from the fact that they didn't follow her narrative choices. So IPSO facto the films are horrible.
The film was bad because Han was killed? She didn't like the way that Luke died. Rey is too strong (she inherited it from her bloodlines, which is how all FS get their powers). Not liking a film because it's not my fan fiction doesn't come across as a lucid and logical excuse to me.

“They have Obi-Wan disintegrate. [...] They killed Obi-Wan Kenobi. [...] And they’re spitting out movies every 3 years, like that will keep audiences invested. And they think it’s important to appeal to a man’s audience, so now their main character is this farmboy, who’s supposed to have Jedi powers, but we don’t know how he got Jedi powers, or who he is. It sucks. The storylines are terrible. Just terrible. Awful. You can quote me — ‘George Lucas, Larry Kasdan — talk to me,'” Darth Snow says from his armchair, in 1977.

    The wheel keeps turning....

Thanks for the clarification! So they didn't interview her and still ran a story on her book.... interesting.

SW fans are truly the best.

Holy cow, 1980 must've been so awesome for you as well!!

She lost me from the outset with her "why are they getting rid of Han Solo? There's no rhyme or reason to it" point. I mean, we all know why they got rid of Han Solo, and it wasn't because the people in charge wanted rid of the most popular character in the saga. And you can't really blame the makers for them not having Princess Leia anymore. So she's not really saying anything other than "I don't like Luke 'disintegrating' much". Was she expecting them to keep knocking out movies with a cast of three rapidly aging actors, one of whom doesn't want to do them, and another who's, sadly, dead? So when those points are gone, all we're left with is the dull, tired, "how did Rey get force powers" nonsense. Nothing to see here.

The press has been inventing narratives and gaslighting the public for a long time now. The fact remains the vast majority have accepted the prequels, accepted the Disney films, with open arms, but they have always amplified a very vocal minority and turned them into representative of the fandom as a whole.

If you look at purely contemporaneous reviews and reactions to the original six films, if you factor all that in, the RT score would not be below 70. And in fact, the original trilogy would have scores in the 70s as well, factoring only reviews at the time of release.

The gaslighting really got started with "The People vs. George Lucas" and really snowballed from there, and infected everything.

And the fact remains, people who worship at the altar of St. Gary Kurtz are the ones who actually don't have an idea of what Star Wars is or is meant to be; because they cling to an ossified, mummified, inflexible dogma that worships only the original trilogy (or really the first two films) and the old EU as the only things that are canon, and denounce fans of everything after as heretics. Of denouncing George, Rick McCallum, Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson as destroyers of the true faith. So I imagine it is with Marcia, who is speaking not of true faith, but continued bitterness over the divorce.

This is awesome FINALLY someone who was on the inside validates everything we have been saying for years. We are not toxic white men we do not hate women we are not racist sexist whatever ist or ism you want to throw out there. These movies suck because the writing is bad and Disney doesn't understand Star Wars TFM was right all along, :);)

But you are ignoring that most of her points are ... silly or so under-developed as to be worthless.

    1. "Why did they get rid of Han Solo? They don't understand Star Wars." - No, they understood that they would get Harrison Ford for 1 movie, but there's no way Harrison Ford would be a big part of Star Wars going forward. Anyone who was making new Star Wars films would have to "get rid" of Han Solo.
    2. "They've lost Princess Leia now" - You can't really blame them for that, can you? I'm sure they'd very much like to have Leia around. Is she having a go at Kathleen Kennedy for failing to clone Carrie Fisher? If so, harsh.

Failing to understand the top 2 points gives the impression that she doesn't really know what she's talking about here. Hard to take anything else she says on the subject seriously, but let's carry on regardless.

    3. "I don't like Luke disintegrating." OK. Why? Yoda and Obi-Wan "disintegrated".
    4. "How did Rey become so powerful?" See the last 6 years of online "debate". No value added.
    5. "The storylines are terrible" - Some top-drawer insider insight there.
    6. "It sucks" - I've seen "professional" Star Wars You Tubers trying to monetise their faux-outrage make better arguments than that. Which is really saying something.

She hasn't actually said anything of any value here. I don't see how anyone can feel vindicated by what she said. Unless she says anything more insightful in the full interview, there is nothing of value here.

    JJ bad, check.
    Kathleen bad, check.
    Rey bad, check.
    Luke death bad, check.

She doesn't need reasoning, she checks all the boxes sans Rian bad. The people agreeing with her "know" why those things are "bad" because they've been complaining about them for the past 5+ years, they use their own reasoning to fill in those gaps. The vindication comes from an alignment of beliefs between someone who has worked on Star Wars (even though it's been over 40 years), which I guess gives her some sort of credibility and the people who don't like the sequel trilogy/Disney Star Wars.

Sorry Prequelfan, she also said The Phantom Menace was so bad she cried after watching it. She didn't have anything to do with those films either.
It doesn't take much to make a certain group of fandom happy.
