Palpatine revealed the location of the DS2 shield generator to the Rebel Alliance to lure them into a trap. But the trap went south and the Rebels were able to destroy the bunker.

Wouldn’t it have made more sense for Palpatine to build a fake bunker on one of the other moons of Endor, have that one heavily guarded, and reveal that one to the Rebels?

The Rebels would probably figure it out eventually and find the right bunker, but by then the DS2 would have nuked the entire Rebel fleet.

Interesting! I imagine the other moons would be too far away for a plausible decoy. It's easy to forget just how much space there is in space. I'm guessing the forest moon is the only one close enough to generate a shield--the others would be so far, the rebels would know it's a fake.

That said, you make a great point. I would just modify it to say--why not have a decoy on the forest moon? Keep the real one secret and reveal the decoy location?

But as Luke tells Palpatine: "Your overconfidence is your weakness." Most likely, Palpatine's arrogance simply blinded him to this flaw. He's used to his machinations working. They worked with Anakin and the Republic during the Clone Wars, he assumes they will work now. He's overconfident, and that leads to his downfall.

    Exactly my thought too.

Could also be a case of people in the GFFA simply being more able to recognize the flaws in a fake shield bunker more easily. Like you could fool cawatrooper from earth with a shield bunker made of cheese, but it might've been not worth the resources to try to build something that would fool the alliance's tech- after all, I'd imagine it takes a horrific amount of energy to create a shield barrier and project it onto a moon-sized space station, then have said shield barrier repel the attack of an entire enemy fleet.

Basically, I don't think they could've just gone to one of the closed out Pizza Huts on Endor and duct-taped a Dish Network satellite to the roof. The Alliance's technicians would've spotted any fakes quite easily. And even if a convincing fake could be reproduced, why worry about that when the 501st is lying in wait?

What it all boils down to is the Emperor didn't anticipate the Ewoks. If it weren'tfor the Ewoks his plan would have worked exactly the way he wanted. The Rebels on Endor were captured and the fleet was trapped. Yes it was his overconfidence, but also his lack of vision. Always in motion is the future. If leia hadn't gotten lost, the ewoks would have never helped the rebels. The Emperor was short sighted he didn't foresee Luke landing on Endor, and questioned if Vader's feelings were clear. He thought Luke would destroy him and turn to the Darkside, but that didn't happen. I guess its a case of he only saw what he wanted to see.

Sounds like a good reason to celebrate Ewok Wednesday.

    Heck yeah man.
Im not saying the Ewoks single handedly defeated the Empire, but they were enough of an X-factor to create chaos and confusion, which lead to the Rebel Strike Team to free themselves and continue with the mission, and ultimately succeed. Also Wicket's suggestion of going around the back as opposed to the front entrance helped as they didn't have to fight the full imperial force.

Really though, I love the ewoks.

They get such a bad rep in the fandom for being cuddly teddy bears, but I kinda love that the Empire was brought down by things that look like Gizmo from Gremlins. And honestly, I think the film does a decent enough job of actually still selling them as a threat, not to mention how they're based on real-life guerrilla warriors.

Thrawn: “One final recommendation: don’t dismiss too quickly those natives you mentioned. Even primitives can sometimes be used to deadly effect.”
“They will not be a problem,” the Emperor said, dismissing the natives with a small wave of his hand. “They don’t like strangers. Any strangers.”
“I leave that to your judgment,” Thrawn said.

Ewoks are actually badass. On Endor, they're surrounded by creatures that want to kill or eat them, many of which are much larger and could make an easy snack out of a single Ewok. Namely the giant Gorax and Boar-wolf. However, due to their numbers and ingenuity, they are the apex predators on Endor. Between hunting giants and the ongoing war with the Duloks, they were more than capable of giving the Empire a good fight, not to mention they had the element of surprise.

If the rebels were to discover the bunker ruse then they might become suspicious of the entire assault. So no trap.

But ultimately Palpatine only foresaw the trap being sprung and not that the natives would get the rebels out of it.

The look and sound like Gremlins... Makes me wonder if they have a weak point too...like don't feed Ewoks sugary things or anything. The emperor should have perhaps used his lightning power like he did in tros and they might have all exploded...

    Ewoks are loved.
Here in France, Dorothée once was a TV star for the kids we were in the early 80's. She was running weekly shows intended for kids on the french TV.
She once released a song called "Les Petits Ewoks", i.e small ewoks.

Ewok rules are much less arbitrary than Gremlin ones.

Don't colonize and industrialize their moon.

Be careful. If once you start down the dark side of the Dorothee, forever it will dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did with all the youngling we were. :(

Yes, I agree that Palpatine underestimated the Ewoks, and this is a major reason why the trap failed.

But I still say that using the real bunker as the trap was needlessly risky, even if the trap seemed foolproof on paper.

I know the Emperor is overconfident, but while I love ROTJ, the Emperor’s overconfidence stretches my limits of belief at times. Between telling the Imperial fleet not to fire on the Rebels and not using a decoy bunker, this almost makes the Emperor look kind of foolish.
