I didn't want to titled this with the word "controversy" but earlier this week a former lighting artist and/or developer* posted on Twitter about how many employees wanted the lead protagonist to be black and/or a woman. This was rejected (according to her) because Star Wars already had a woman leading a prominent Star Wars story in Rey as well as the gaming already possessing two other black women/women of color.

Read the tweets below and two of the attached articles (which cover the same thing).

What are everyone's thoughts on this? I have my own feelings, of course, but I'm more curious about what everyone else thinks.

*I'm not sure what qualifies one as a developer, and if that's a catch-all title or a prestige position or something in-between. It's meaning can change the context of the conversation some, but not enough.

The fact that these discussions are even happening in the first place is the real problem, but I think the hole goes deeper than that.

I'm happy that we got Cal Kestis as the main protagonist, not because he is a white male per se, but because white males are seemingly the only characters that the writers are bold enough to give weaknesses. Characters with weaknesses are interesting. Characters with no weaknesses are boring.

Until we get here: "they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." , we will still be having the same "discussion" over and over and over. This message also can cover the gender "discussion" as well.
