This was posted in the 'concerns' thread but I thought the subject @NinjaRen brought up warranted its own discussion. The take implies that there have been unnecessary cameos in the Star Wars show on Disney+ to date. I would respectfully disagree.

It's one thing to dislike the appearance of other Star Wars characters in a show but I would argue that the cameos we've gotten to date have all been central to the plot.
    • IG-11? He was a bounty hunter assassin droid. His appearence in Mando S1E1 to compete with Din and all the other hunters for 'the asset' made perfect sense.
    • Bo-Katan? She led Din to Ahsoka Tano and gave him an understanding that HIS "this is the way" wasn't the ONLY Mandalorian way. Non-Rebels viewers learned that she used to wield the Dark Saber.
    • Ahsoka Tano? She give Din (and the audience) The Child's name and directed him to the Jedi seeing stone where Grogu could reach out to a Jedi.
    • Boba Fett? He went searching for Din to get his armor back -- and later, offered to help Din rescue Grogu.
    • Luke Skywalker? He was the Jedi who answered Grogu's call.
None of their appearances were gratutitous; all of them were introduced into the story to further the plot.

I have no idea if we will see surprise cameos in the Obi-wan show. But it trust Debra Chow enough to believe she wouldn't be too keen on a 'fan service' cameo unless it made sense for the Obi-Wan story she is telling.

    Agreed.

When it comes to fan-favorite cameos, I've often wondered why some fans dislike them. If they are thrown into a show gratuitously, I would wholeheartedly agree. But as far as I can tell, that's not been the case with the Disney+ SW TV shows.

To make something clear- I don't mind cameos, references or easter eggs. But what Mando S2 and TBOBF did was just too much and way too forced. I mean, this is a galaxy with billions of planets, you don't just randomly run into the exact same person needed to move the plot forward. Just focus on the actual characters and plot.

Mando S2 and TBOBF were especially frustrating because these cameos took away important screen time for the actual main characters. Hell, people even criticized that Mando and Boba weren't the main characters of their own shows.

I think current Star Wars has become more about who shows up, than story. It feels like a late night talk show with different guest stars appearing. Another problem is the execution. These cameos are always meant to be a huge surprise with a big reveal. In the TBOBF it felt like they wanted certain moments to happen so they can have that "remember this?" moment.

But I'm kinda positive about the Kenobi show, because they already showed the reappearing characters in the trailers and they actually have a part in the story.

Not a cameo but a completely new character.

Both characters were only in those shows because Filoni has a crush on his own creations.

But in the end I agree with you @Darth Derringer- those characters actually had their importance, but I just didn't want to see them in those shows. I wanted something new.

I can only talk for myself, but fan service and cameos take me out of shows. I don't need to be remembered of watching a show. Yes, I do love Luke, but I don't need to see him everywhere + Mando Luke is a pretty boring Luke, but that's a different discussion.

SW was never meant to be high drama for adults, From the very beginning -- going back to George Lucas -- Star Wars was designed to be a 'comic book' movie (meaning cool action and adventure for youngsters.) Same goes with Jon Favreau's TV shows.
This seems like a strange criticism when you consider that we've had decades of network TV shows featuring weekly stories about the show's stars interacting with 'the people who show up'. That's essentially the history of most TV series.
    Aaaaand that's somehow bad TV?
I don't get what you're saying here. Can you give me an example from TBoBF?
I guess that depends on who you ask. Most fans who saw him for the first time immediately recognized him from the gang of bounty hunters in TESB. In the Season 1 Gallery episodes, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni made it clear that's exactly what they intended. The only difference was the original was called IG-88 but they called the one in Mando IG-11.
That sounds rather harsh. I suspect if you took a poll, you'd find A LOT of Mandalorian fans 'have a crush' on Ahsoka and Cad Bane too.
Most diehard SW fans I've talked to absolutely LOVED the Luke from Episode 6 of TBoBF -- especially his training of Grogu and his interaction with his father's padawan, Ahsoka. Their big criticism was they wanted to see A HELL OF A LOT MORE of it. :)

But Lucas never really relied on cameos- okay you can argue if C-3P0 and R2-D2 were needed for the PT.

But TV shows really changed in the recent years. The weekly episodes are replaced by binge watching series and people are more involved in plot and character centric stories these days.

A surprise, reveal or twist never last as long as a good story. You could compare it with a jumpscare. Sure, a jumpscare will scare you, but it only works for the first time and then you forget about it shortly after. It's kinda like Hitchcock's take on suspense:
I take suspense over surprise anytime.

I was actually talking about his appearance in Mando S2. In TBOBF Luke was quite nice.

And that's a pretty big problem if you think about it. People wanted to see more of Luke (and Mando) in a Boba Fett centric show. Exactly this scares me about the upcoming Kenobi show. => the show doesn't make you care about Obi-Wan, just like Mando S2 didn't make you care about Din and just like TBOBF didn't make you care about Boba's story. It was always about other characters.

Like it or not, we've entered the "Marvel Age" of storytelling that started back in the early days of Stan Lee and the Marvel comics that debuted in the early 1960s. You'd have issues of the Fantastic 4 or Daredevil which would feature a guest appearance by Spider-man!!! (Stan Lee was no dummy. He knew who his 'cash cow' was.) :)

The films produced by Marvel Studios starting with Iron Man followed that same pattern (how many guest stars were featured in Captain America: Winter Soldier or Captain America: Civil War? I don't recall fans of those movies complaining about an infringement on Cap's screen time.

Now we're seeing it in the Favreau-Filiniverse of Star Wars TV. Will there be any crossovers in Obi-wan Kenobi? Who knows. Maybe there will be, maybe there won't. Either way, the trend has been set for these franchises and I have no doubt they will continue in Disney's TV shows the same way they did in the comics back in the day.

So far I have not noticed any unnecessary cameos in the show. We have C-3PO on Alderaan which makes sense, and we have the homeless clone trooper on Daiyu which also makes sense.

An unnecessary cameo would be if we see Ponda Baba and Dr. Evazan on Tatooine again.

Seems like Star Wars fans spend a little too much time on things we don't like when there's so many things we enjoy that we could discuss instead.

Yes, because being critical could create uncomfortable situations and we wouldn't want people to feel offended by something they enjoy, right?

Imagine, for a second, if fans were always satisfied 100% with everything the entertainment business put out. What a nice and happy world indeed. And Sonic would still have looked like this:

    Unnecessary appearance=

Ben and Leia stand in line for food at street food place called "Out of this World." William Shatner yells, "Hey hey hey, pal! I was here first." Stands in front of them.

As long as it isn't a shoe horn job that distracts from the tale at hand for no reason then I don't mind pop in's, Easter eggs, or even full on guest or regular appearances.

If it fits in context or isn't a distraction then bring it on/don't mind/don't care just depending on how it hits me.

According to Chuck Wendig's novel "Star Wars: Aftermath", chapter "The Clown", I think Jar Jar is dead by this time, isn't he ?

Anyway, does the opening PT flashback count as an "actual appearance" - because if so, Jar Jar actually was on screen for at least two seconds.

According to Wookieepedia, quoting Aftermath: Empire's End, Binks outlives the Empire (possibly by many years).
