    Has anyone played this yet?

I’ve been gifted a copy, but not had a chance to play yet, so interested in other gamers thoughts and experiences in it.

Well, it's a good 4/5 game. Similar to Eldritch Horror in some mechanics. And playing a smuggler character seems to be easier, than a bounty hunter.

Lando narrowly beat IG-88 to a win despite me be cash rich!

How many different playable characters? Are there expansions or any planned for the future? Plenty intrigued by this game, might have to get it myself!

There's 8 characters in the game. A good showing by OT characters with Han, Lando, Boba, Bossk and IG-88, but Jyn Erso, Dr Aphra and Ketsu Onyo make the game feel broader - as does the inclusion of the rigger ship like Anakin and Ahsoka use in TCW, Hondo's transport and even the Moldy Crow from Dark Forces.
Each character has a their abilities and benefits, unsurprisingly some lean more towards smuggling jobs, while others are far better at bounties and some are great for battles if you run into trouble with the Rebel, Imperial, Syndicate or Hutt patrols.

It feels like there's an opportunity for expansion and FFG have hinted at it, but as yet nothing is confirmed.

There're some major stuff going on with FFG at the moment (restructuring, possibly in prep for a sell-off from Asmodée, according to rumors), so it's likely they're holding off on lots of products and expansions.

I haven't played Outer Rim myself (decided it was one FFG boardgame too many for me), but I love their SW: Rebellion (massive scale space conquest AND small scale character conflics baked into the same game) and SW: Imperial Assault (mini-boardgame and probably the greatest love of my life). They do a good job with their IP licenses, I feel, so I'm sure SW: Outer Rim plays great, too :D

(Darn! I'll have to come over for a game, @Lazarus Dei!)

I’m thinking I should amend the thread to just FFG Star Wars so we can cover the whole range.
I just recently played my first game of Rebellion too... I was a single move away from hitting the Rebel win point (uprising influence meeting turn marker) when a Death Star blew up Bespin and my base with it. Sadly I’d failed to notice that I could have played a card to get me out of it, so I’d worked on basis I had a hidden fleet and ton of ground assault resources - all gone in the blink of an eye

you’re welcome any time matey... well any time there’s planes again. And fewer pandemic related border issues. And no lockdown. You get the idea.

Aw man, it's wild how often those games get down to the wire, culminating in a final turn gambit.

Shame about losing the hidden base, but I hope you still had fun! It's been over three years now since Rebellion hit my table, I really need to change that soon.

it was good and definitely enjoyed it, just a bit deflated that my first game was a loss... especially as I’d also lost my first game of Outer Rim to the same guy the week before :D

At last, you will have your revenge!

If you want some tips, it's always good to be prepared to evacuate the base if needed with Rapid Mobilization, even if that ties up one of your leaders each turn.

As the Rebels, you're really playing a game of drawing out the clock, so distracting the Empire and leaving before they get to you is invaluable.

that was the stinger, I don’t think I’d fully appreciated what the R/Mob card could do for me in such a corner as there were only about 5 planets left that I could possible be on.
As it happened, if I HAD played it and drawn Endor as new base planet then I’d have won.

Hey, at least you got it now!

It took me a ton of games to fully appreciate how vital that card is. It's just... so tempting to build up a decent Rebel fleet to harass those Star Destroyers with, and making Chewbacca a jedi, and gaining alliances across the galaxy, and scoring Rebel points... there's too much to do for the leaders you have! :p

Yep, I was actually one of the playtesters for it.

It's definitely an improvement. The cards make the combat a lot snappier, and add in some more thematic elements too. I also love the minis that come with it, especially the Nebulon B and Interdictors.

    playtester, eh? nice gig!

if I can be sure of getting back on the table in good time then it sounds worth the investment

Second LAAT. Used a different color scheme because having an Imperial Army can get a little boring.

So, I was lucky enough to get to play Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game at SWCE this past weekend… and it was great!

The gameplay is really straightforward, it’s Rebellion vs Empire with the objective to destroy a number of the opponents bases to win. Each faction takes turns to draw a hand of 5 cards and then play as many as you like/can from it, resolving combat and any additional card gains via resources gathered from cards too. There’s also a neat little tracker of which side the Force is with which can impact your plays.

The artwork is nicely done - seemingly by same folk responsible for Outer Rim.

It’s pretty quick to play, isn’t a table hog and is surprisingly well priced for a licenced title, but I’m sure in standard FFG style that there will already be ‘booster’ card expansion packs planned.

…and in case you didn’t guess, yes - I very much liked it (not just because my Empire wiped the floor with the Rebellion thanks to to the timely arrival of my Death Star) and parted with cash to secure my copy

    upload_2023-4-11_12-9-57.jpeg

I also got to see the new Shatterpoint miniatures game being played… and that it quite the beast - but that story is for another time ;)

I'm highly annoyed that they haven't created an online version of Imperial Assault by now. It's a great game and it should have seen an electronic evolution by now.

There's an app version of the game, where you get to play without and Imperial Player (i.e., the app runs the badies for you), but that's not what you're after, I assume?
