    Broken Vader 1.jpg

I believe Anakin joined Sidious to destroy the Sith from within while underestimating his ability to resist the corruption the Dark Side. In his jealous anger, Vader choked out whatever was left of Anakin when he saw Obi Wan on the ramp of Padme's ship. Being the Chosen One is what allowed a sliver of Anakin to exist, somewhere in the depths of all that evil. That is where the events of Kenobi have left me.... Anakin has been gone for awhile.

And only the thought of saving his son from the same fate, can revive him.

Why do I get the feeling that many are trying to compartmentalize Anakin's character? I find it very disturbing and a sign of poor writing. Have people been doing the same to Count Dooku for many years?

Regardless of his moral compass; regardless of his Sith title; and regardless of whether he was a slave boy, a Jedi padawan, a knight or a Sith Lord; Anakin Skywalker was always himself. This need to compartmentalize him strikes me as very unnecessary.

Anakin 'died' when Padme did. She was gone. So, he believed, were their children. Anakin's family meant the world to him.

His life was a terrible experience, and only his hatred kept him breathing. The part of him that was Anakin began to stir into life when he realised his son lived, which is why no matter what, he wouldn't - couldn't - kill him.

There is no compartmentalization. Only exploration of the depths from one man's utter depravity being unleashed. I do see them as two characters, always have.... Vader couldn't breathe while he lived and dead Anakin held his breath for a very long time. - Split personality disorder is the way of the Sith. - jk/

If I could ask Hayden about his opinion on one thing about the Prequels.... it would be this: "When did you cease to act as Anakin Skywalker?"

Darth Vader was always namelessly at the helm of pride, lust & greed INSIDE of Anakin; Vader is the anger of the slave, the frustration of the Padawan, the delusion of the Jedi knight and the hatred of a betrayed Sith Lord.... now without any moral restraint. Anakin Skywalker ceased to be when the evil within himself, took over.... and that evil was given a name. Plagueis was right, Qui Gon was the key to it all and when Maul killed him physically.... there was no one outside of Palpatine that Anakin revered. Was it pride that kept him from properly respecting Obi Wan? Was it fear of the unknown with regards to the welfare of his Mother that stunted his growth? Was it Kenobi's initial treatment of the boy set the tone of their relationship? Whatever it was, Anakin was too old to begin training in the ways of the Jedi, but apparently not the Sith. Sidious played his cards perfectly while he feigned the affection and adoration required to turn an emotional boy into a weapon of mas destruction.

Like DMX once said, "I'm possessed by the darker side, living the cruddy life..... I'm slippin & fallin, I can't get up."

Seeing Luke's torment was the impetus Anakin needed to get up, one last time.

It's a sad META story, really.

I chose the temple when he killed the younglings, because I believe Reva is an Ishtar figure, a goddess of transitions.
He stabbed her once in the temple at the beginning of his fall into darkness, and once at the start of the rise of the light
, the evening and morning star, Venus.
The cycle of time, Tala, blew herself up, sacrificing for the light to start rising.

With arguably the exception of the third film, the Prequel films weren't written and directed - IMHO - as a dramatic character study. But I would argue that 'Darth Vader' was always inside Anakin Skywalker and viewers saw that side of him surface whenever he got REALLY ANGRY and upset (i.e. his Tuskin Raider slaughter). So once he learned the love of his life was dead and his body was permanently scarred and mutilated, his burning anger was the only thing he had left to motivate him.

I think this is an awesome question. The fact that there's no right answer makes it even better.

I went with his defeat to Obi-Wan on Mustafar. I know his choice to be called Darth Vader and to join the Sith had been made earlier, and I know that we saw him kill the Seperatist leaders, and I know he already had the "Sith eyes;" but you could almost see each of those steps along the way as choices. You might even read ulterior motives into each of these choices. Once he was so badly wounded, he had to rely on his hatred and anger to keep himself alive. To me, that's a whole different level and the true transformational step.

This is a relatively new phenomenon. It's something that has gotten more popular as the Clone Wars came and went. Growing up, we all knew what Vader was. His legacy is of a monster, not some poor victim. Hell, he wasn't even beloved when the prequels came out. It's all Clone Wars diehards. The longer that show went on, the more he was "Anakin". Now it's morphed into this "two people" crap.

That's not your opinion, that's a fact. There was not much look into who he was as a person at all. I do thik there's something to Vader being who he was as a person. Outside of The Phantom Menace, he is not shown to be the best guy. He's creepy with Padme, a murderer (Sand People Incident), and thinks he is entitled to be treated like a leader/ruler.

Thanks, I'd like to believe all my opinions here are rock-solid facts, but I'm afraid 99% of the posters here think otherwise. :)
The big vibe I got from Hayden's Anakin when I rewatched the three PT films was not an evil or creepy person as much as a young man seriously immature for his age.

That's an opinion, not a fact. Not everyone would agree with this belief that "The Phantom Menace" and "Attack of the Clones" didn't include a character study of Anakin. I certainly don't.

You are correct. The PTs were indeed a character study of Anakin. The debate is over the perceived quality of that character study.

FWIW, I thought the OBW TV show did such a good job of depicting both Anakin Skywalker and Obi-wan Kenobi that it enhanced both characters from the PTs.
