Box Office Pro just posted a good recap about what went wrong with Solo. Good stuff.

The problem with those headlines was... it was only the good side of the news/coin.

The other being, they had to use BP as a comparison to hide that only 3 weeks before the movie came out,
it was selling less than any other SW movie in the Disney Era.

So in all truth, or behind the surface, that news never was a 100% "good" news in SW terms of course.
Sure things may have changed. But they didn't, until now, at least.

And of course we may discuss why that was/is the case.
    All the reasons.
    But signs were there.

As we have to aknowledge that is not Memorial Day week end all over the world.

That is not that people all over the world read the same reviewes, or know about RT, or about the boycott.
They don't even know what SWJ means, that someone is pointing to that as the problem.

Not only among the GA, but among the vast majority of the SW fan too.

But still things are going wrong, and perhaps even more wrong, outside the US.

That to say, only, I really think it's far more complicated....

I am not from North America but today's reposts of ticket sale look grim.
    People are boycoting wrong film.

What he doesn’t discuss is that this movie’s budget was 250+ million (because of the reshoots) and who knows what the marketing budget was so this will be a money loser in the end.

You have to look at KK and the production problems they are having on these films. SHE hired Lord & Miller and then fired them halfway through shooting so you have to question her first instincts. R1 suffered the same problem as they brought in (I can’t remember his name) to tighten up the movie from Gareth Edwards.

It’s not about box office per say for a fan like me, it’s about that these movies should be better. If SW is going to be another blockbuster, then that’s not for me. It maybe for some fans and I’m cool with that, but not for me.

Box office arguments continue. I see the Cantina is continuing normal operations.

As far as box office I follow one personal rule. The #1 box office movie of all time, worldwide box office, I personally hated.

I really don't get the anti-Kennedy stuff. Seems like she hasn't been afraid to course correct if things are going haywire. Apparently that saved RO and Solo isn't a disaster. Seems like most fans like it.

If she weren’t at the behemoth Disney, then she would have been fired by now because her job is to keep under budget (Hence why Lucas split with Gary Kurtz because ESB came over budget). What did she expect hiring Lord and Miller? I could have told her that a Solo movie would be quirky and strange because that’s the movies they make. So she shouldn’t be complimented for costing the company millions of dollars to keep fixing these movies cause she made the wrong choice in the first place.

It’s really not about if Solo will top 10 of all time. It’s more about in context with other SW movies and that’s it. How does R1 (a movie nobody asked for) gross 155 million opening weekend and Solo (a movie nobody asked for) gross 1/3 less then that?

Uh huh... I don't really know how to respond to stuff like this... it's silly internet chatter.
Based on recent reporting it less about "quirky and strange" and more about them not being efficient film makers for a big production. They were asking for overtime because they weren't working on schedule. The mistake was hiring them in the first place I guess. That's probably why we're hearing about established/proven directors for upcoming projects. So Disney/Lucasfilm have already course corrected.
No one asked for Titantic or Avatar as well. Movies with better press and better reviews do better than films with mixed reviews. This isn't rocket science.

She is being turned into a Manny Goldstein figure by radical regressive types and melodramatic tantrum throwers alike.

The fandom will be healthier long term without them or if they grow up to say a freshman in high school level. Either way will be an improvement.

About the midnight sessions, here in Brazil, was disappointed, of 4 sessions, no one was sold out.

I watched the movie may 24 here, 9:45 pm and imax 3D, every Disney era movie, these session was sold out, this one, less of 50% with tickets sold.

Oh I admit it is wishful thinking, but it isn't exactly out of the realm of possibility. If the powers-the-be at Disney aren't happy with Star Wars' performance, it's her head on the chopping block, especially when we consider what a cluster-mess the production of these movies have been.
I am not sure I understand what you are asking here. Speaking only for myself, I don't boycott movies. If a movies looks stupid or I don't think I would enjoy it, I simply choose not to go. I don't consider that a "boycott" but that is merely a semantic argument.
    --- Double Post Merged, May 26, 2018, Original Post Date: May 26, 2018 ---
Yes. You got all excited over day-1 presales when those of us who knew better knew that was just a mirage.
    Here's your evidence:

Boxofficemojo currently projects $108 to $115 million for Solo over the full 4-day weekend. You can keep living with your head in the sand pretending everything is fine though.

I wish more fans that hated TLJ shared this sentiment. A "boycott" just sounds so petty.

Ok, I'll rephrase. If Solo bombs and KK is not fired, would you want Ep.IX to bomb as well and would you be willing to do something to make that happen?
Because one flop would not be enough.

No they wouldn't because the other part is the profits and return on investment.

If by "do something to make that happen" you are asking me if I would skip the movie then the answer is no. I cannot imagine any set of circumstances by which I skip E9, especially since it is back in the capable hands of JJ Abrams.

I will, however, say that I am a textbook example of why merchandising sales are down. I will certainly still see the movies, but I am just as certainly spending far, far less on Star Wars the past 6 months than beforehand. It's not a "boycott" as much as it is a matter of "why would I buy Legos and action figures from a movie that I didn't like?"
Don't be so sure. As I have been saying for months, the overall trend for Star Wars is a downward one. A lot of people have been putting their heads in the sand talking about how wrong I was, but even they seem to have finally come around.

I admire your passion. However, Solo's box office projection isn't evidence that "in cinematic franchises, the popularity (or lack thereof) of one installment will directly impact the next installment." This is simply wishful thinking in regards to Solo.
    As I mentioned:
People tried to dismiss the effect of critic reviews/audience reaction of The Last Jedi. Both were good and fueled a big opening weekend. Solo isn't getting that boost which is why projections were being revised down over and over the past two weeks.

I never have read so pessimistic article about SW film
like one just released by Scott Mendelson, Forbes.
Film will barely cross 100 mil. dollars for the memoriall weekend(from up to 170 mln hope by Disney) , and it could end with 250 mln domestic... and 600 +mln worldwide at the end of theatric run.
I like the film, but it was unwise to underestimate fans and backlash over The Last Jedi .
    I am sad.
I hope film will have."legs"means longer theatric run, film deserves it.

Solo didn't get good reviews and the audiences who have seen it didn't like it as much as The Last Jedi. This isn't about a backlash.

I'm not sure why this concept is so difficult to understand. The film was tracking significantly higher two weeks ago before the reviews arrived as a mixed bag.

Actually exit polls from public are better than for the the Last Jedi and are improving. I hope this film will find way to escape suction from a sinkhole created by The Last Jedi.

I never believed that original estimate of the movie because there was evidence with my local theaters and reserved tickets (along with many fans showing the same empty reserved seats in their towns). TFA, R1 and TLJ were all sold out on opening night in my local theaters right after they went on sale, where they’re were loads of reserved seats open for Solo. And I live in a town in a major city with loads of big cinemas so I have to drive 5 minutes for 3 different theatres.

My point is that fans were not as hyped for Solo BEFORE the reviews came in compared to TFA, R1 and TLJ just by the way reserved seats were not selling. Now we can debate on whether it’s TLJ backlash? SW fatigue? Or they just never wanted Solo? But it goes a lot more deeper then just mixed box office reviews.
    --- Double Post Merged, May 26, 2018, Original Post Date: May 26, 2018 ---
I can tell you exactly why KK should be held responsible, Deadline reported the original budget to Solo was 125 million and doubled to 250 after her mistake of hiring and firing Lord and Miller. That’s a 125 million dollar mistake!
