I'd look at it differently. The reviews are good, but not good enough.

I think this is a case where, like Justice League, a lot of the people pre-bought their tickets and general audiences were less interested.

So we should trust your local observations over industry experts who actually do this for a living? I don't pretend to be an expert, but I'm just basing this off what the experts have said the past 3 weeks.
This is it. Lucasfilm has made a film that most fans seem to like, but the total box office success of these films doesn't rest on the hardcore fans. It rests on getting the general audience to buy seats. A 71% RT score isn't horrible, but it's not gonna create a buzz.

This is something people are gonna have to figure out. Lucasfilm has to make films that both general audiences and fans like.

One "spark of hope" is that the Jumanji recommend rating was lower than Solo so maybe over the next few weeks Solo has some staying power.

This news of the underwhelming box office just broke in the past 24 hours so there will be many more articles analyzing why. Right now there are a few articles on this and they are all over the place. I just read one article that goes by the narrative that this was totally from SW film fatigue of 4 films in 3 years, and said nothing about mixed reviews being the main cause. So there will be a million industry experts commenting on this so your narrative of mixed reviews isn’t the law as you say. I’m anxious to see what they say after the weekend when the actual numbers come out, or even after next weekend and whether this has any legs or the bottom drops out.

It really is a fantastic movie and I am seeing it again tonight. I agree it, and especially Ron Howard, deserve better. He really came through and took a troubled production and made something I think he should be proud of.

I doubt that deeply, it was a decent movie not the best Star Wars Movie, it was better than the Last Jedi. But due to the backlash from The Last Jedi, a lot of Fans are boycotting the movie because of what KK and RJ did with The Last Jedi. But there some fans who hate what happen in the Last Jedi and went to see Solo The Star Wars Story and many of them said it was an okay movie not the best Star Wars Movie. Many who loved the Last Jedi who went to see this new movie won't be enough to save this movie. So for that reason I think it not going to be a big hit related to money, it wont do better finical from TLJ or beat The Force Awakens, but it might get close to Rouge 1.

Its a Black hole gravity well from The Last Jedi that is still dragging everything down. I know it from talking with people.
Solo actually has better exit poll than The Last Jedi.
I Know people who feel pain for not watching Solo in theater, but they are doing it to bring KK down, however irrational all of this looks.
While the Last Jedi started with 78% audience score it dropped eventually to below 50%, Solo started from 39% expectancy and is now 57% and is rising and is already above The Last Jedi.
I still have a hope that Solo will be legy film, the spread of word that its a good film could help and people will see it over longer period of time ,for what is really good film not to take all concequences of catastrophic strategic and management decisions of the Lucas arts leadership.

I actually think Solo will be a hit on Bluray/Streaming as the box office talk/boycott talk/civil war among the fans will prevent it from getting any momentum in the theaters.

I think many will actually give Solo a shot or a fresh look in the fall when it is released on Bluray/Streaming and fans can watch it without caring about Box office numbers. In the end, that’s all that matters because the bulk of the viewings by fans over the years is at home anyway.

Solo's audience scores are lower than The Last Jedi.
Oh, are you looking at RT? Good grief.
Is that going make general audiences buy it? Again, this weekend's box office numbers are because general audiences are staying away.

I'll guess I'll bow out. So people simply don't want to discuss this logically.

I think the boycotting will have a slight effect if at all but most of lower expectations can be attributed to normie (people who like SW but aren't hardcore fans) issues.

I just think a lot of the normies are
    A. ) Doing something else this weekend
    B. ) Seeing Deadpool
    C.) Have Star Wars fatigue
D.) Are saying, "but that's not Harrison Ford!"

Maybe you should bow out because you have this smug opinion that yours is the law and any other opinions aren’t logical. I have no problem if your point of view is that general audiences are staying away, but to say that this is 100% true and that everyone else is an idiot for having a different opinion is ludicrous. Unless you interviewed EVERY person who had seen the movie this weekend and every SW fan who hasn’t, then either continue the debate and listen to people’s opinion or walk away with your know it all attitude. We’re all here to debate, but you just dismiss anyone who disagrees as illogical.

If you have some real data/evidence to present let me know and I'l be glad to debate. "I think there's a backlash because I think there's a backlash" isn't really a point of debate. It's a matter of faith. :)

Don't forget the marketing push for this was:

    A) Super late
    B) Had it's own share of issues (plageuirsm claims for initial posters)
    C) Didn't have much momentum
    D) Is trying to find a place in between Deadpool 2 and Infinity War

I think there's a bit of truth to this. The film at no point in it's three-year history had any momentum or any positive word of mouth (until people actually saw it). It had every thing working against it. (I'm surprised the finished product is as good as it is, TBH)

It's a crowded marketplace right now, the hardcore fans are iffy, and the marketing for this was not very well done. It never looked good. And I think the only thing that is saving this from being a Justice League-level bomb is that the reviews are generally positive. The people "boycotting" this are a small minority, and to be honest I think half of them are full of crap anyway, amongst most people that anyone can tell is taking a level-headed approach it has mostly positive word of mouth from what I've seen, but that can only take you so far in such a busy season with as many issues as this film had going in.

I have a feeling the drop off for this won't be huge and that it'll be be one of those small successes. Honestly having seen the film it's fairly small scale and wouldn't have been so expensive to make if it weren't for the fact that they made it twice, so I am still predicting that a sequel is in the line unless the final tally this weekend is under $100 million, which would be a bit of a disaster.

People came from theater where I watched Solo more satissfied than with The Last Jedi. The atmosephere was better.

Some people shuld accept that The Last Jedi is not accepted well by a large portion of the public. When will you realise this is sad fact? Accept it son.And I am posting this fact because it causes problems to Solo.I do not say it is the only problem with Solo movie attendance but its the most prominent one.

Solo is not hated by any one, it pays the price of contempt towards The Last Jedi and what this film reperesents in terms of where ( in belief of some) Star Wars are going .And people literally focussed on one victim, miss Kathleen Kennedy who should simply go.I am not sure is she the responcible for everything to be honest.
Those are tough facts, I know they are not popular in some circles but those are facts. We can decieve ourselves in closed opinion moderating forums ( oh I know it, everything even more than those who read this even imagined) , but situation is different outside.

For the sake of the arguments... Again..

The movie is doing bad worldwide.
And worldwide people know nothing about the boycott.

    Those people are irrelevant.
They may be in touch with common sense.
    Nothing more than that.

That said, the elephant in the room is of course TLJ.
I, as someone who didn’t like it, I won’t say it’s only due to that.
I won’t even say that most of the people hate it.
But I won’t say the vast majority like it, as well
    Because all instruments fail.

There’s no way we could know it for sure.
    The BO is not prove.
Cinema score is not prove, bs it’s far from being a scientific semple.

    RT or IMDB are not.

This is something we’re going to understand better in the next years, result after result.
Hopefully, bs there’s chance we’re going to debate it for decades to come.

That said, it looks to me that fans only went to see Solo.
    But not all of them.
Those who did, seem to enjoy it.
    It’s not bad received.

But the so called GA that is totally missing.
Those who don’t know/care about the production problems
the critics reviews and worldwide they don’t even know that RT or some YouTube channels existe.

    That means two things, imo.

First, the “fandom” not matter how strong it is is still and by far a tiny minority of
    the potential SW audience.

Second and more importantly, if LF/Disney long term goal was to turn SW
into a kind of Marvel franchise, meaning only into a franchise that produces
more contents at year, something went wrong.

I don’t think it’s an impossible task, to be honest.

BP came out 5 weeks before AIW.
And sorry, but Solo as a movie and as character is tied to TLJ no less
no more than BP is to AIW.

The problem if the numbers are those is not fatigue.

I just think that the ST - no matter how popular it is - failed
to get really on board a new generation.
They may even like TFA and TLJ but they are not SW fan.

Because that’s the kind of audience that may sustain the BO regardless
    when a movie comes out.
It may be not a stellar BO. But not that bad as that of Solo is until now.

Regardless who’s the actor playing Han Solo, etc...
The long term target were not the old fans.

And it’s pretty clear - imo - even if we take into account some of
things people at LF said in the last months.

If that was the plan, it didn’t work.
Maybe it was just too late.
    Something else took that target.

That to say also, I don’t think Ep. IX is domed.
Just because it’s possible that in people minds SW is the Saga movies, period.

    But it’s not 100% safe...

Edit: the experts tracking numbers changed quite a bit in the last weeks.
On May the 4th following the news that on the first day of presales Solo doubled BP
    they foresaw a 170-160 Ow.
    Then it became a 160-140
Then 150-130 when it finally came out.

But we’re far from the latest one too. That to say if the so called experts failed - even tho at least
to me the 1st day of presales wasn’t that good news they wanted us to believe it was - it’s
really hard for everyone to understand what’s really going on...

The general audience are casual fans though, this is one of many reasons why The Force Awakens did so well. You can't compare this with film series like Jumanji or Mission Impossible or something like that, because the general audience isn't filled with casual fans of those film series. Star Wars on the other hand is a unique brand in the sense that the general audience is filled with casual fans.

I think Solo's score seems to be very representative of what both critics, general audiences and fans think about the film. It's good, but not so good. Acceptable, but not bad per se.

I think we would have seen the same type of stuff during the PT (ironically YouTube) started the year ROTS came out. Heck, if YouTube existed in 1983, you would see those same videos aimed at ROTJ, “F-U Lucas for the Ewoks, F-U Lucas for Luke and Leia kissing in ESB and now they are siblings..,,”.

My point is the fanbase has always been toxic, but now everyone has a platform 24/7 compared to the PT where there were a few SW message boards (which were a full civil war), or 1983 where you could only complain to your friends.

This is sort of the price we pay for more options because nothing has to appeal to the masses anymore as each person can speak to a niche group of people who are in total agreement. There was no platform to do something like this 20 years ago as everyone had to appeal to the masses.
