I know this has been covered before, and JJ Abrams "supposedly" shot down this rumor, but the more "leaks" and official news I read the more sense this makes.
This is my rant in favor of a two part conclusion:

If JJ Abrams is trying to course correct TLJ or at a minimum build a stronger story around those events it makes sense there is not enough movie to do that in even what is already a rumored 3 hour runtime.

If there are hours and hours of footage why not break it in two rather than cut valuable story from the final edits. This is not just wrapping up this trilogy its wrapping up 3 TRILOGIES SPANNING 40+ YEARS!!!

JJ is introducing by my count at least 8 new characters (and the OG Lando is coming back) with at least 3 or 4 of them playing major rolls plus the holdover new characters from TLJ (Rose, DJ) plus Rey, Kylo, Finn, Poe, Leia ( somehow that needs resolving) Chewie, the Droids, Maz Kanata, Hux and somehow Luke freaking Skywalker STILL factors into this.

THIS IS GETTING DONE WELL IN ONE MOVIE??!! CMON!!

Also IMO I don't think enough time elapsed between TLJ and the TFA to be called two different stories, rather its one long story introducing the new characters of the trilogy. TFA brought them together and TLJ concluded that story ( it definitely did not do much to advance the story or develop the characters beyond TFA...don't @ me)
which leaves too much story on the table for one movie to handle especially to wrap 3 trilogies and flesh out all these new characters and pay proper respect to the old favorites.

AND...There are no Star Wars movies scheduled for release after Dec 2019. Every standalone and new trilogy are in development with no releases until...
Disney is gonna waut until TBA to release another movie?

Give us a proper conclusion don't deprive us of the footage!! Give us two movies.

Dissenting opinions or other reasons this makes too much sense not to happen are welcomed below.

The saga films have a specific structure and I would rather they stick to that instead of pulling a harry potter scenario. Besides, there is not that much story left to tell, and stretching what little story there is left over two parts would make for some incredibly uneventful films.

We won't know until we see the movie or get a full leak of the movie whether or not they need to fix the course of the sequel trilogy. For all we know this has always been the intention of the trajectory of the movies.

Even if I agreed that they needed two parts to wrap it up (not necessarily saying I don't agree... I just don't really know much of anything at this point) I honestly think I'd rather take a stunted story than go to the theater for Star Wars: Episode IX... Part 2. The purist in me has a problem with that.

I rather for them to stick to the current formula. Might as well make the second part Episode 10. He should of thought about giving us more exposition in Episode 7 instead of relying other people to tell his story. That way he can force the next directors to adhere to the story he was telling instead of making bunch of mystery boxes that may or may not get answered. The destroying of Luke's academy in Rey's flashback should of been a plot point used in 7 as an example. Forcing the sequel hands on not allowing a time jump was another mistake he did. Sure RJ drop the ball on some areas but JJ dropped the ball due to creating interesting plot points that he never intended to answer.

I would love it if they did a part 1 and part 2 to end the Skywalker Saga. While I loved TLJ I worry that it did not move the story forward enough to easily be able to finish the whole saga in one 2-3 hour movie. I think a part 1 in 2019 and a part 2 in 2020 would be so amazing and would give Benioff and Weis plenty of time to develop their series of movies for a release of 2021.

I have quite the opposite feeling. We've already had part 1 of the finale last year in the form of The Last Jedi. This film has a very strong feeling of finality to it, with the epilogue, VERY pronounced scene of Luke's death and the whole "pass on what you have learned" theme to it. The only thing left to do in IX is to wrap Kylo-Rey ynamic and show Resistance's final victory over the First Order (it will happen.) Also, on a more personal note - I believe it's time to move away from the Skywalker-centric stories and from the timeline of their lives and to explore some other time periods and regions of the galaxy, isn't it? Episodes X, XI and XII will come out (obviously,) but let's have at least a 15-year-long break between IX and X to let the nostalgia juices brew for some time.

My guess is 9 is the end of Kylo's story as well as Leias, Lukes, etc.

There will be more movies with Rey, Finn, etc. Since Rey isn't a Skywalker, they can justify this being the last Skywalker movie when Kylo dies.

In other words, they don't need to wrap up everything this film...just Kylo and Leia.

I don't think so. There are a lot of issues with this, some mentioned above. We SW fans are a finicky bunch, and going this route could, and I believe ultimately would, backfire. Even had the fandom not been divided going in, I don't think it would be a good idea, but as things are now, even less.

I don't think the story needs two films. I think it needs one well executed film, that answers the failings (or imperfections, if you prefer) of the previous two and offers us a conclusion. I think that could be accomplished. I don't think adding another movie would address that. I don't think there is that much that needs to be explored, that can't be done in a single movie. Truthfully, I think it could make it worse, give JJ more time to beat around and plod around the point he has to, or needs to make. It would heighten the risk of merely making it long winded rather than more profound. Sometimes you need to be able to pursue this, but I don't think the conclusion is the time to pursue this, it needs to wrap it up.

I can only see two reasons why it would require two movies. The first is that the ST hasn't given us enough depth thus JJ has to create more depth than can be provided in one movie. Or, the message is so deep and convoluted that it needs two movies to fully explore what both JJ and RJ touched upon in their movies. In either scenario it means that one or both RJ and JJ failed in some capacity. Either they failed to develop enough depth, or they failed in condensing their thoughts within their respective movie.

I lean on the single movie final because I don't believe JJ needs to delve and make the ST deep, either naturally or artificially. I think that can be left aside for X and beyond. I think there is only one single simple thread in the ST that needs to be wrapped up that applies with the whole of the OT/PT/ST saga. That doesn't require two movies, it requires one well executed movie. Add another movie at the sagas peril, that it will distract from the goal of finalizing the Skywalkers and the temptation to add more mystery boxes will mean we'd get superfluous material that would distract from the weight of that finality.

    Just one guys opinion.

It really depends on what they are doing with this story. Is JJ really using this film to "course correct" and fix the things RJ threw out in TLJ? Then maybe it is a good idea. I don't see how he can course correct and move the story forward in a meaningful way in just two hours. Of course I also don't understand how rockets work, but they do, so I guess there is hope. (By the way, the rocket thing is supposed to be a joke, please don't anyone post a response about how they work!)

As for the release schedule, part of this is due to the fact that KK screwed the pooch and extended the agreement with Turner. Turner owns the broadcast rights to all Star Wars films, apparently this includes the new ones. That agreement ends in 2021 (I think). Thus they are focusing their immediate efforts on TV shows, since those can be put on Disney's new streaming service. The pause in films also allows them to gauge where the fandom is after IX is out and they can then move forward from there.

Personally, and it's just my opinion, they are in no way done with the Skywalker/Saga films. Come 2027 or so they will release the start of a new Skywalker saga. Again, just my opinion but there is too much money to be made for them to abandon the Skywalkers.

Assuming Daisy, John and Oscar are willing to do more movies, there will be an episode X. I think that is going to be years away. My guess would be 10+. Unless Kylo lives there will be no Skywalkers in the next set of movies. The Skywalker saga will be done. X will start a new saga of movies. They definitely are not done with saga films. They are going to create new “sagas”. Lucasfilm has made it clear they want to “expand the universe” (my wording) by creating new stories with new characters and possibly different time periods. We are going to see that with the Benioff and Weiss movies, the Mandalorian, and the RJ trilogy (assuming that is still a go).

I'm not convinced they are done with Skywalkers. At this point in my life, I've seen the story end twice already, once in 1983 and then again in 2005. I've heard this all before. The temptation is too great, and the possibility of billions of dollars is too hard to turn down.

I do agree they will try and move on. They are already trying to do just that. But they could easily, in say 2020, announce they are going to recast Leia and Luke and do a film about the original characters set after ROTJ. They could easily recast Rey, Finn and Ben Solo (assuming those actors don't want to come back and that they live through IX) to do a X, XI and XII. I'm also not convinced Rey isn't a Skywalker. I have a feeling JJ is going to make her Luke's long lost daughter to explain her incredible force powers. Assuming she lives they'll have Rey Skywalker around to base the new trilogy on.

The only thing I completely disagree with is that JJ is going to make Rey a Skywalker. I definitely could be wrong but I don’t see it happening. They could recast characters but I don’t see them getting into a habit of doing it considering Solo did not do so well. For the record I don’t think recasting was the reason Solo underperformed but I think Lucasfilm will be very cautious with recasting especially if it is for a main part

Has a 2 part finale ever worked where one of the two isn't just the worst?

And good people can disagree. No problem with that. I just keep thinking of that "official" trailer for the Force Awakens. It opens:

    Maz: "Who are you?"
    Rey: "I'm no one...."

But is she REALLY no one? I just don't buy it. Especially when you take into account Teaser trailer 2:
Luke: "The Force is strong in my family... My father had it, I have it, you have that power too."

This part could be all BS, but they were setting this up for Rey to be Luke's daughter, in my humble opinion. RJ threw that idea out, but did it in a way that leave the door open for Rey to be Luke's daughter. Was Kylo telling the truth or was he playing on Rey's fears? I never thought he was being truthful. Time will tell.

As for recasting characters, I think Solo's problem was there was certainly a backlash over TLJ, the marketing for it wasn't good, the timing was crap, etc... Add to that the bad press around the production and the fact that not many fans wanted a Han Solo backstory and bam, you get this. I do think LFL would be wise to think carefully about recasting the Big 3 in the future. If they were to do it, they'd best set the films in the early years immediately following the Battle Endor. Doing otherwise would be foolish.

Anyway, if Rey turns out to be Rey Jones, I'll happily eat crow. As long as they produce her birth certificate saying "Rey Jones" or "Rey No One." LMAO

Early in the lead up to TFA my options on Rey’s lineage was always in flux. At times I thought Skywalker. At other times, Solo. However, as the time got closer to the opening of TFA I settled on “random” (for lack of a better word). After seeing TFA I my belief that she is random grew. I won’t re argue it because that has been done as nauseum in the Rey parentage thread. Now I would not put it past JJ to shake things up but At this point in the game I don’t think it would serve the story well. I am looking forward to see what happens in 1 year.

I got ya man. I also don't want to reargue this as well. I just think they set her up to be "someone." She can do things even Anakin couldn't do. To then make Kylo, someone who has definitely fallen to the dark side, suddenly become the beacon of truth, doesn't make sense to me. I think of what Yoda says about Count Doku in AOTC, something about lies and deceit being his thing now that he is a Sith.

Anyway, if it is well written, I think it would make sense. Of course, "well written" is the key phrase. :)
