This was probably already discussed and just a side note, I can actually deal with a ton of issues in the prequels and enjoy the overall story and visuals, but when Windu shows up with three other Jedi to arrest Palpatine and the Sith Lord literally slashes them down like they're younglings.. That just jars and frustrates me every time I watch it!! And it's obvious they're not in a stasis like say Rey was put under by Kylo in TFA.

Some say it was Palpatine's Crystal or Dark Side powers that literally made the other Jedi, but Mace, completely defenseless, but I keep thinking it was just terrible choreography which is strange considering how that was one of the prequels strengths..Has anyone heard any REAL evidence that they planned this jarring moment in ROTS?

Lucas was trying to show how strong palpating really was and that he was unbeatable but the choreography should have been much more refined, I agree

Didn't the novel say that Palpatine was so fast, they never had a chance to move? Or something.

If Yoda is powerful and skilled enough to be that fast, why do you find it so hard for Palpatine to be that accomplished? What is it about Palpatine that you found this scene hard to accept? The three Jedi who accompanied Mace weren't exactly him, Yoda or Dooku.

The only thing I can complain about this moment was that it was a little confusing. That I can understand. Otherwise, I see no reason why Palpatine was not capable of taking out those three Jedi so quickly.

Exactly what I mean. I should be more clear. It wasn't that Palpatine defeated them so quickly. It was the way in which they choreographed it. Simply plunging his saber into a battle tested Jedi's belly just had laziness written all over it. If he were indeed to quick for the Jedi to respond they should have did some kind of blur or speed effect on his movements when slaying the first two Jedi. Then he maybe had to slow down to concentrate on his parry and saber technique. That I could believe.

I can buy this, but at least throw some kind of blur or fast motion effect in then while he easily plunges his saber into one Jedi then slashes the other down like a giant cube of butter. :) That's all they would need to convey how he pulled that off. I could even buy that he has to stop his force speed burst to focus his power on the lightsaber duel between he, Windu and Kit Fisto (whom also went out like a Vhlor after so much hype on him in the EU).

It was originally going to be much more choreographed. Including the Windu/Palps part.

But they had to do most of it in wide shots, because they were using CGI over the stunt doubles face (as they did with Dooku).

Lucas decided he wanted to see more of Palps face, so they scrapped a lot of what was planned. He had Nic Gillard teach Ian and Sam Jackson a very simple and easy fight and focused more on the goofy faces.

I think the other 3 guys at the beginning were a casualty to this change - because the OP is right: the first two just stand there while he stabs them. And Kit Fisto gets like one saber clash and he's gone.

It's a little lazy to my eye when you watch it too, but I've since let it go.

(but for the record: I agree. Even if Palps was that strong and fast to stab number one, then stab number two, Kit and Mace should've killed him while he was doing that, not stand around watching - they were in a very small confined space as a matter of fact.)

I wish I could let it go..besides Padme dying of a broken heart it's probably the second biggest thing that takes me out of the film. If for any reason just another huge blown opportunity.. :(

I agree that I always found this hard to accept. Especially once he started murdering them, the others had a major opening to kill him, and it would've been totally justified. However, I can sort of see how it might work...

-I think the Jedi Council is more accustomed to discussion and meditation rather than combat. Being warriors is not their #1 priority.
-Palpatine is the Chancellor. Even if they are justified in killing him, who knows how people would've reacted to that.
-It's really no surprise that, when people are shocked and panicked, they can make very poor decisions. Maybe they weren't really expecting Palpatine to fight back, and when he did, they just choked under the pressure. I know this isn't really something you would expect from a Master Jedi, but I think it's true that even very wise people can make very bad decisions, given the right (or wrong?) circumstances.

Ehhh. I feel like it would have been the perfect opportunity to use force lightning there and blast everyone down including Windu down the hallway. This would have given him time to jump up and kill the three lying Jedi before engaging Windu. This also would have been why Windu was ready the second time Palpatine uses lightning and Windu blocks it with his light saber. :)

I just can't believe you have an entire staff of people that overlook such a crucial moment. It's the big reveal and start of the Sith/Jedi battle! You just have to do better than that! Right?

Um, the way the two just kind of stand there looking sideways and seemingly frozen, does strongly imply that this is exactly what happened.

The droning score also contributes to this impression, as does Palpatine's "surreal, demonic" scream right before that.

It could even be a Flash Gordon reference, judging by how Palpatine kind of takes his sweet time before the first stab..

    However:
...the fact that this isn't certain, and the possibility that it actually was awkward choreography and editing (perhaps some C-camera side angle thing squeezed in there while they were hastily redesigning the scene?), is obviously still a failing of the movie.

It should've been 100% convincing, if not 100% clear - if there were to be speculation, it would've had to be about what cool thing happened there, not whether a cool thing happened or it was sloppy execution.

Wouldn't even be that strange, as there actually is some "BB/TDK" type action in places - nowhere to that extent obviously, but like some of the Jedi vs. robot shoot-outs in the first half of TPM, and a lot in the arena battle, have that clunky, messy editing/quality to them.

So this'd be just another example of that, if it were the case.

The habit of people calling their face expressions goofy or comical or whatever is kind of getting annoying - or, rather, has become annoying years ago.

Some of the stills are exploitable in the context of like a shiteposting message board atmosphere, but that's it - there's no unintentional comedy in that sequence in the movie. That comes later.

The overall point of the scene is that Palpatine is in a league of his own and that Agen Kolar, Saesee Tiin, and Kit Fisto were all hopelessly outclassed, which I believe the film effectively demonstrates. The only real issue is that the choreography is a bit slow early on.

I think that the fight could have looked better if they had edited it to be tighter, or at least look like it was happening as a quicker pace, if that makes sense. The initial attack he makes to kill Kolar seems like it could have easily been blocked, along with his subsequent slicing of Tiin. The way he kills Fisto is fairly believable, though.

The first two kills were scary and creepy - they looked disoriented or hypnotized, and he just stung through them like butter it was awesome.

Fisto went down like a Vhlor - though I understand he's into that.

Its beyond ridiclulous. The coreography and editing is just so... bad. Palpatine jumps in, pulls his sword back and delivers his stab in an incredibly slow fashion... Some of the greatest jedi masters (warmed up for a fight) act like clueless idiots.
Also, I still continue to advocate against the idea of Palpatine using a lightsaber. In the OT he thought those were just toys. Before RotS I've always thought he'd never use one, as its inferior to him. Also where does he keep it? He always carried a lightsaber in his sleeve? And he also had an extra one?!
    I really dont like it.

Palpatines obvious and utter joy in violence and hatred is one of the reasons he's one of the best baddy's of all time! That's what I get out of his expressions and laughter during his duels. He's like, FINALLY I GET THE CHANCE TO KILL SOME JEDI!! Muhahahahaha

I would concur with your first argument, but Palpatine and Yoda saber battles (though I admit it took some time to adjust to the image) was something I really enjoyed seeing. Any Sith or Jedi is trained with a light saber. Especially in those times.
    --- Double Post Merged, Nov 15, 2016 ---
Great points! I guess I forgive a lot of the other moments that seemed clunky because so much was going on. Here they could have easily made it convincing and really just seemed to not put a ton of effort in. The Jedi that got stabbed just appear to be the kid in the pre school play that was picking his nose rather than holding up the Sunshine prop...except this was Star Wars Episode III, the most important episode in the prequels with the highest budget available. wtf?

Hadn't the Jedi been engaged in a three year war against the Separatists by this point? And I've noticed that when it comes to the Sith, they are not inclined to be reasonable. Not even Yoda.

Yes, the execution of the scene was a bit clumsy. But I find the idea that it was improbable for Palpatine to defeat three Jedi Knights so quickly hard to swallow. I wonder if so many are complaining due to a desire for a more drawn out duel between Palpatine, Mace and the three other Jedi. Well, we got the drawn out duel, but only between Palpatine and Mace.

I was a interesting encounter with the jedi suddenly being powerless against Sidious he dropped them one by one, despite being armed with lightsabers they were just outclassed.
