Hi everyone, I've recently finished Claudia Gray's book "Leia, the Princess of Alderaan", and I really dig the quirky character of Amilyn Holdo who has been compared to Luna Lovegood. There is one thing I was wondering about: Amilyn has a penchant for speaking in cryptic metaphors which Leia calls "Holdo speak". For instance, she compares a person who plays both sides in a conflict to a muffin: "a muffin always falls the cream side down, so a muffin completely covered with cream wouldn't fall".

I'm really curious where does this penchant come from, and whether it has something to do with the culture of her home planet Gatalenta. Gatalenta is a very spiritual place, its inhabitants are into meditation, and their culture resembles Earth's Eastern religions - and these religions make broad use of metaphors, proverbs, koans, etc. So I wonder whether this speech pattern is just her personal quirk, or something that has to do with her background?

I would recommend you to read "Bloodline" by Claudia Gray too, where there are two more characters that are from Gatalenta - Tai-Lin Garr and Joph Seastriker - so it gives you the perspective of the Gatalenta inhabitants, even when they have different personalities.

Thank you! I also read that Gatalenta is famous for its flowery poetry, which may imply that speaking in metaphors is not uncommon there.

Holdo's way of speaking also reminds me a bit of Oma Desala and the Kheb monk from Stargate, i. e. "If you immediately know the candlelight is fire, then the meal was cooked a long time ago" ;)

"Holdo speak" really makes me think of this monk character from Jackie Chan adventures:
