On the heels of a major report yesterday, a clarification of sorts has come from Lucasfilm via ABC News. Lucasfilm states that despite yesterday's report that the 'Star Wars Story' standalones have been put on hold, multiple films beyond what have been announced are still in development.

Clayton Sandell of ABC News has been told by Lucasfilm that despite the recent report of a standalone shutdown, multiple additional films are being developed:

While Lucasfilm doesn't get into specifics here, we take them at their word that projects beyond what have been officially announced are in development (so in addition to Episode IX, The Benioff and Weiss films, and Rian Johnson's trilogy).

But this does not confirm anything regarding yesterday's reports that specifically mentioned a Kenobi and Boba Fett project being halted. It is possible these two projects were indeed put on hold while others are in the works. Being that several different outlets (including us) all separately heard similar things about those projects, we remain curious about it all.

You might recall last year The Hollywood Reporter issued an exclusive with Stephen Daldry attached to make an Obi-Wan Kenobi film. Well now another site well known for casting news had this to say about the rumored Kenobi project:

The world of unofficial news reporting is a roller coaster, and we do the best we can to get you as much information as possible free of the filter of a big eared lovable animated mouse public relations squad, because just like you, we are fans who can't get enough information about this wonderfully stupid space opera saga we all love so much. So keep it here and we'll update you as we hear more!

    SOURCE: ABC News

    UPDATE!

After ABC's report, Collider's Steven Weintraub defended his report mentioning again that the story they ran yesterday was confirmed from several sources:

Again, I want to say that we've also heard about LFL rethinking the spinoffs and putting them on hold from a completely different source. As they say - when there is smoke, there is fire. I would say that perhaps there is some truth in both ABC's and Collider's reports, and we'll just have to wait and see how things will unfold in the future

Also EW's Anthony Breznican hinted on Twitter that no Star Wars stand-alone movies are being canceled:

But then again Collider's and our report never said that they are being canceled. Still, it's good to know that at least some of these projects still have some life left in them and may happen in the foreseeable future. The question is, which are they?

Peter Sciretta from SlashFilm joined the tweeting party dropping the bomb that the pre-production on Obi-Wan was shut down.

Together with the other report that Stephen Daldry left Kenobi even before Solo hit theaters suggests that there are indeed some troubles with this production, although this project is not even officially announced.

As you see, a lot is going on right now behind the scenes and things are pretty vague at the moment. We will keep you updated if new information is released.

Ugh... Oh, man, this is confusing. What's the point of cancelling Obi-Wan and Boba Fett if they're still developing standalones? They decided these two are a bad idea all of a sudden? Or maybe they want those spin-offs to create their own continuity? I don't buy that there's nothing to the rumours from yesterday.

I considered ditching standalones and focusing on Rian's trilogy and B&W stuff a major step forward. Now we seem to be back to square one.

Unless this was all just a bit of a fishing campaign by Lucasfilm and Disney to see where fans currently stand on the current state of stand-alone movies and possibly give them ideas as to how to proceed going forward.

    Now I'm reading this:

Say... what? A Mos Eisley Spaceport film? Gee, I couldn't think of a less appealing premise... Not sure if I buy the rumour that this was a thing. I really think it's more likely that anything Mos Eisley-related was a part of Kenobi or Fett project.

Overall, doesn't seem like a solid report... B&W coming before Rian? Seems unlikely... MSW have a good track record, but nothing here adds up IMHO.

I can absolutely see Disney/LFL making something this dumb. They're trying so hard to bank off the nostalgia of the OT, and are so immeasurably-petrified by the prospect of creating original content outside of "DER, REBELS AND UMPIRE, TIES AND X-WINGS, THAT'S WHAT EVERYBODY LUVS", that they're literally going to run the OT aesthetic and characters into the ground with how much they're overusing them.

They are absolutely uncreative enough for this to be true.

I assume what is actually gonna happen is that Lucasfilm is gonna focus everything on finishing the ST, after that they'll relaunch the "A Star Wars Story" idea but be much more cautious about announcements and about who they hire. I doubt that they'd entirely cancel the idea because the spin-off idea is extremely strong, especially considering how massive the universe is and how many great characters can carry a movie.

Can they just have a plan already? Sit down until after IX, see where you sit, and hash out a full universe-spanning plan of where you want to go, and the steps you'll take to get there. I just want to know that SW is in good hands, but the news is always seat-of-your-pants style, it's frustrating.

It worked as a book, so it kinda appears like they are just diving into the EU to find ideas of what people like. The Tales from Mos Eisley Cantina was a very fun book, but is it really the way to go forward with SW movies? It better have a compelling story to make it work.

it's a bit worrying since it makes it really look like they have idea creative vision or ideas of their own.

I liked the previous news a lot more. They should really focus on making fewer movies with new directions, instead of spewing out random OT rehashed. Mos Eisly spaceport? Really? What's next - Lobot movie? Porkins movie? Mon Mothma movie? Chewbacca's family and Ewok movies? Oh wait...

You know what? How's that Rian Johnson trilogy coming along? At least it will be new.

So we're getting a lot of mixed news and rumours coming our way. I understand that a lot of fans are on the fence after The Last Jedi - I didn't love a lot of stuff in that film, but I still think it's a good film. And I think that Episode IX can actually make TLJ better, if JJ ties it all up.

I just hope that Lucasfilm isn't too concerned with Solo's box office result (I liked the movie and wouldn't mind a sequel) and tries to re-focus and copy Marvel's CU strategy, 'cause then I smell trouble.
I saw Infinity war, and it was ok, but the stakes in that movie makes no sense, IMHO, with Guardians 3, Black Panther 2 and Spider-Man 2 coming soon.

But I would have loved if they had mapped out the sequel trilogy from the start. To have an overall story set from Force Awakens.

Anyway, I'm a Star Wars fan, so whatever movie that gets announced, they got my ass in the seat. Rian's new trilogy, Benioff and Weiss, Boba Fett, Obi Wan, heck, I'll even go watch a Bib Fortuna standalone.

May the force be with you!

    Hollywood plans are highly modular.
Most studios are juggling at least a few hundred projects which are all going in different directions, or are poised for different directions, and they swivel those directions rapidly.

I was once sent a cancelled script for a film that was shut down in the dev stage. It was one of dozens that week that were cancelled.
    It was called Galaxy Quest.

Disney has a plan. You're just on the crap end of the feed because you're not supposed to know their plans, so all you get to see are the scattered tips of icebergs that seem randomly placed.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

My guess right now is that all spin-offs are indeed on hold, but the general idea of standalones is not decisively dead. I really, really wish the officially announced projects were currently the absolute priority.

All denials focus on the "spin-offs are not dead narrative," which might be exactly what they're trying to say, but then... they obviously won't go out and say "yup, we're still doing Obi-Wan" because this project has never been announced...

If LFL really wanted to kill these rumours they would have announced the next standalone in the coming weeks or so. But I don't think that's going to happen. They used Breznican and the ABC guy instead, I don't think we're getting more than that from LFL.

100% agreed. And that Mos Eisley thing sounds sooo desperate for nostalgia... Sorry, it really is the worst idea for a spin-off I've heard to be thrown around. I have a hard time believing it's legit.

Has anyone read the now non-canon Kenobi book? I thought it was a good story, had no involvement from Luke, was set around Mos Eisley (I think), and Kenobi was the only active character you already knew. Just saying.
