I had heard about Anakin asking for help. Just makes the whole scene more unsettling, really! I think in this case the scene was powerful enough to speak for itself, without the line being needed. If the dialogue was there, Obi Wan would seem too heartless.

Huh, I hadn't heard that before. I'm glad they didn't stick with using those lines, because it's rather jarring... and not in a emotionally useful way.
After everything that Anakin has just said and done, why would he ask Obi-Wan for help? If we had seen Anakin being conflicted about his actions, it might work... but it still leaves Obi-Wan acting heartless and uncaring.

Agreed, if we'd been presented with the Clone Wars' version of Anakin and had grow to love him, if Anakin had been portrayed in a way that had had more sympathy and chivalry, that demonstrated he was being perhaps literally controlled by Palpatine and doing things against his will, then it works, but instead we only saw Anakin as a loathsome, monstrous, petulant, vicious child-killer throughout 2 & 3, so really at that point it's too little too late. For me, the main flaw of the two-Hayden-fronted prequels is that they never make us like Anakin, so there was no fall from grace; so having any semblance of conflict and sorrow by the time his arms and legs have been cut off is worthless. Burn, you insufferable monster, you got what you deserved.

    "This is Nothing to me!
I can't come back from this?! I am Jedi, and you know NOthing of my pain!" aaaauhh!

Why would he do that? He was arrogant, and what, dippy and kiniving? Get it right, you can't be evil and make me cry when the lava takes you, he's not both, and I do cry
I can't watch that movie anymore though, once scars

I think it would make Obi-Wan seem to cold and callous, though it reads powerfully on paper

That entire scene was awesome except for the one high ground thing. Frankly, ObiWan should have just defeated him outright without that pause. Other than that, that was an awesome scene with Ewan McGregor.

I think it might have worked if they had included him asking Obi-Wan for help, but then just kept Obi-Wan's lines the way they were and it would've worked. Obi-Wan didn't even have to acknowledge Anakin's plea for help, and then Anakin could've just proceeded to scream "I hate you!" Either way the scene was excellent. RotS is an awesome flick!

But the point of that was to show that Anakin’s overconfidence was a major reason for his downfall, which had been foreshadowed before. It also allowed Obi-Wan to give Anakin one last chance before he was committed to darkness for life. I like it the way it is.

It's also poetically ironic since the high ground didn't help Darth Maul one bit lol.

I think it was also supposed to somewhat parallel how Obi-Wan defeated Darth Maul. Obi-Wan was able to defeat Anakin, because he knew what Anakin was thinking - he was going to try the same trick he himself had done 13 years before.

Like others have said, if Anakin was portrayed more like how he was portrayed in TCW, this line would've worked. Otherwise, it doesn't work with the way Anakin was portrayed in ROTS.

    Glad it was cut.

Would have sounded too weird given everything that happened in ROTS, imo.

Wow. I never knew about this.

I think it could have worked if you made sure the onscreen context* played out as, "Help me, I don't know how to deal with this power" and not just "Help me, I'm dying."

If you do that, then it enhances Anakin's tragic arc - a person burdened with more power than he knew what to do with - and also adds a bit to the Luke/Obi Wan dynamic in that the latter failed Anakin in this moment, but ended up contributing to his redemption in the end.

*Trouble with this is that in order for that moment to really hit, you need to heavily rewrite the PT with a focus on Anakin being a person given more power than he knew what to do with, thus his life being an endless barrage of temptation and confusion to the point where the audience can understand his desperate turn to the dark side for structure and direction and relief.

BTW, Lucas clearly was writing towards this.

Really don't understand why lucas took that out, it would make the scene more heartbreaking and make obi wan a bit guilty

    Based on the films:

Padawan Kenobi had a stronger force connection in his fingertips than Jedi Knight & resident Chosen One Anakin Skywalker, had in his legs.

I think I would have liked the inclusion of these lines. But I agree with other posters here who say that the PT lacked suitable groundwork in establishing Anakin as a truly sympathetic and courageous but flawed character. So it may have still amounted to too little too late as it stands now, in my opinion .

I don't agree that it would have made Obi-Wan himself appear cold. He's duty bound not to show the Sith mercy. This is a necessary component of Lucas's pseudo-Buddhist critique of Christianity - You must be prepared to kill your brother for universal love's sake. Universal love is cold and without mercy.

That doesn't seem to work for me. I find this to be too much of an abrupt switch on Anakin's emotions.

I don't even understand this opinion. I cannot help but feel that whoever believes this was not paying attention to Anakin's character arc. Or simply wanted him portrayed as a one-note bad boy. I wonder if they even understand moral ambiguity in fiction.
