I don’t think I’ve ever delved into my thoughts on Trevorrow’s pitch for Episode 9 on this forum. While I like and prefer elements of it to TROS, I think that it’s far worse than what we got. And that’s coming from a guy was initially very disappointed with how Episode 9 turned out and I’m still the not the biggest fan of it, though I do find it to be pretty entertaining.

There are just so many elements of Duel of the Fates that are very weird and not in a good way: Rey “Solana”, Kylo getting half of his face mutilated, Chewie flying an X-Wing, and a scene with Jedi fanboy Hux “losing the Star Wars” and killing himself with Mace Windu’s lightsaber. TROS had some weird elements to, but they weren’t quite as out there.

All of that being said, there are some big elements that I vastly prefer to what we ended up getting in TROS: Coruscant being the setting for the climactic final battle, Finn leading a larger stormtrooper rebellion, Rose not being completely sidelined, and the film showing Rey starting a new Jedi Order at the end. I even prefer the title of “Duel of the Fates” by a slim margin. Certain ideas like Mortis playing a role and the character of Tor Valum were pretty interesting to me, but I don’t think they would have necessarily fit in the end.

I guess my ideal Episode 9 would have been a combination of the best parts from TROS and DOTF. Palpatine would still be the big bad, but instead of a convoluted clone plot, his role would be spiritual and not corporeal. In my version, he’d be influencing Kylo Ren via the Sith Holocron (like in DOTF) and ultimately trick him into fulfilling his goal of returning to the world of living. Maybe the essence of a battle to end all battles, along with some Force mumbo jumbo, can bring Palpatine’s spirit back to life. Kylo realizes the error of his ways, and after one final meeting with his mother, he gives up his dark persona and teams up with Rey and friends. Rey and Ben fight against Palpatine as he’s crossing from the underworld, and with the help of the Jedi spirits, they ultimately destroy his spirit forever. Finn leads a major stormtrooper rebellion and his Force abilities start to manifest in a more overt way that in TROS, with the help of Rose. Poe could have more of an arc with him coming out of Leia’s shadow and embracing his role as a leader in the Resistance. He leads the galaxy fleet and maybe gives his life in the final battle. The film ends with an exiled Ben and Rey restarting the Jedi Order on Ahch-To. I’m somewhat spitballing here, but something like this would be my idealized version of Episode 9.

I actually really like the cloning idea. That was interesting new angle to take, imo. But otherwise, I completely agree. I think both versions have their share of good and not-so-good ideas, which makes me wish we could've mashed them together somehow and gotten the best of both. :)
I still think this is one of the funniest things in all of Star Wars. :p

The choice of the title Duel Of The Fates makes me think of when indie/art rock bands name themselves after an album, song or part of a song by their favourite band. Like Radiohead, and Slowdive. Or the epitome of that The Clash: Live At Demonhead (the name of Brie Larson's band in Scott Pilgrim)

Truly wonderful the mind of a child is.

    - this is the quote that comes to mind when I watch a JJ Abrams movie.

The draft of Treverrow's script that got leaked was a third or fourth pass-through and was most likely finished before Carrie Fisher died in December 2016.

We know this because Carrie's death forced him to completely go back to Stage 1 and try to figure out a story without Leia's involvement, which is something he was never able to do even after Lucasfilm gave him a writing partner in Jack Thorne.

Here's an interesting break down from a SW fan on DOTF. I like it because it's objective and well thought out:

I look at Trevorrow's track record and to this day I don't know what LFL saw that made him the choice (after Johnson and who knows who else) to write and direct the closing episode of the saga. Every time I catch Jurrasic World and its sequel on TV, my opinion of TROS improves.

Lucasfilm was looking for young, trendy directors that wouldn't be too expensive or dogmatic to bring their vision of a beloved franchise back into the pop culture zeitgeist - preferably directors that they had a good working relationship with. In other words, Lucasfilm was looking for the next Christopher Nolan.
Trevorrow was a sure contender since Safety Not Guaranteed was a critical darling and he seemingly had a good enough relationship with Spielberg and Lucas-adjacent people to be put in charge of Jurassic World. Then all of that faith was justified when Jurassic World made a little over 1.6 BILLION dollars for Universal and capped at the third most successful movie of that year (behind TFA and Furious 7). So yeah, Trevorrow made sense. I don't like Jurassic World either, but when Trevorrow makes a billion dollar movie that is somehow a crowd-pleaser, I'm going to want him in my franchise.
As for the ending, I think that makes sense as well - Abrams was there to bring the nostalgia, Johnson was there to bring the character intrigue (and beautiful directing), and Trevorrow was there to deliver a crowd-pleasing popcorn film and just jog to through finish line by finishing up the things that Johnson set down. And then nothing really went as planned...

I think that LF & Kathleen Kennedy were trying to make SW more cerebral and appeal to a wide audience. Not just teenage boys and hard core fans who just want swashbuckling. and action. They were going for the same effect that Marvel has done with their SH films. I have never seen this film before, but I understand that Trevorrow got a whole heap of praise for Book of Henry, an art house type of film . Which is why they brought him in. For whatever reason it didn't work and all Trevorrow could come up with was spectacle and fan service.

One of the producers said that part of the problem was that Treverrow wasn't brought on board from the start. So he didn't understand where they were going. It wasn't until I read a fan essay on Rey that I sort of understood what was wrong. I think that there was a loose outline for the ST, but what they were going for was inner/psychological growth and transformation of the characters. Rian and JJ were aware of this. But Trevorrow didn't and know how to deliver.

Just a quick fact check - it was "Safety Not Guaranteed" that Trevorrow got the heap of praise for. The Book of Henry came out summer 2017, and was a major flop. It added to the instability of Episode IX at the time (and fuel to the anti-Trevorrow fire). By September, Trevorrow and Lucasfilm split ways.

Just a slight point of confusion for me - when you say "from the start," what do you mean? I know that Trevorrow was brought on in 2015 only a few months after Jurassic World's release. Sure it was a year after other directors like RJ, Gareth Edwards, and Josh Trank were brought in, but it was still pretty close to the beginning of things.

Jurassic World and its sequel did not make me think that Trevorrow would bring a more cerebral approach to anything.

There are some good bits. The stormtrooper rebellion, Rey with a sabrestaff, and Rose having a major role. But as a Kylo/Ben fan I find that even Trevorrow wanted him as an unrepentant villain, to the extent of having him kill Rey's parents. Why so much hate for the last Skywalker?:(

Even the TROS junior novel has him practically suicidal throughout it, begging Rey to kill him at one point and implying that his entire purpose was to 'die to save the more worthy Rey'.

I actually find that content in a book written for children disturbing.

Yes, absolutely. I know a LOT of people hated the 'reylo' ship, but I would have loved it if it had actually happened...I don't count the kiss, because all it seemed to be to me was Rey sucking Ben's lifeforce out!!

I thought it would be an interesting resolution if BOTH of them had fought and killed Palpatine, or Ben did it alone, finally putting his family's long time enemy in whatever hell he belonged in...then instead of Ben sacrificing himself for Rey have Rey healing Ben. Kylo Ren 'dies' Ben Solo is reborn.

I think the powers that be wanted Rey to have all the glory of killing Palps herself, but I can't help but think that it wasn't Luke that killed Palpatine in the OT...it was Anakin. That did not for one minute diminish him as a hero - why should it diminish Rey? We'd already seen how powerful a Jedi she was.

And yet virtually every one of your complaints is about a perceived diminishing of Ben Solo (a character who doesn't really appear until the final third of TROS) .
    --- Double Post Merged, Feb 18, 2022, Original Post Date: Feb 18, 2022 ---
Anyone who thought the redemption and rehabilitation of Ben Solo wasn't going to coincide with him dying a noble death were deluding themselves beyond all reason.
