I endorse the idea of reading the book again! I'm only on p. 32 so you can soon catch up with me.

 

Need to decide if I read the OV or the german translation.

 

If German, then please the Margaret Carroux translation, as she did this together with Tolkien, so it's very close his original.

 

We all know that there is absolute no other one. My eyes turn yellow when it comes to this.

 

@Star Dude Tolkien, as a philologist, spent a lot of time on the translations of his works into many languages. This is brought out in "Letters".....one of the funniest letters is about his efforts to assist the translation to Swedish. Some of the words/concepts in his books don't translate too well into Swedish....

 

Just finished the last chapter of the Margaret Carroux version. And just started reading the "Wolfgang Krege" translation (I found it in our library). And it's not as bad as I heard. I still like it.

Saw this thread in the "new threads" feed and had to pop in. Big fan of lord of the rings. The movies grabbed my imagination like few other things had done when I was a kid (I was born in 96, so this must have been a couple of years after Return of the king came out). I borrowed the books multiple times from the school library to read them and was completely absorbed into the world Tolkien had built. I think the experience taught me a lot about myself as a person, and how much I enjoy diving into big, fictional worlds, whether it's Star Wars, or video games or super heroes or whatever. I think I'm going to have to read the books again soon, it's been a long while since last time.

 

OK so this new Amazon Prime series about the 2nd Age is looking extremely cool !!! Did not know they spent $250M on the rights to this, from the Tolkien Estate. One of the agreements was the series has to stay true to Tolkien Canon - i.e. anything written about the 2nd Age.

I just started reading them for the first time although I had read The Hobbit about 20 years ago and re-read it before starting LOTR. In fact it was while I was first reading The Hobbit that I learned of the then-upcoming film franchise. I liked the Hobbit but not enough to be excited about the movies but after being talked into the first one I really enjoyed it and was excited about the follow-ups. For various reasons, including the fact I didn't really get into the 3rd one that much but also just things going on in my life at the time, the final film pretty much ended my interest in Middle Earth. It wasn't that the movie made me mad and I swore it off or anything, it just didn't do much for me and while I still considered it a cool franchise I lost interest. I've never even gone back and watched any of them in their entirety (meaning I've only seen the final film once all the way through) though I've caught parts of it many times over the years so that I've seen every part MANY times. Those things are always on TV and I still liked them enough to leave it on that channel if I couldn't find anything else. Then when The Hobbit movies came out it sounded cool but not cool enough for me to get around to until this past year.

Anyway even though I wasn't huge into Middle Earth (or fantasy in general) I'd always planned to go back and read them some day. I've been reading mostly sci-fi or non-fiction recently so I was in the mood for something different and some people have been urging me in the direction of LOTR so I went ahead and jumped in. I finished The Hobbit and enjoyed it more than the first time I read it. While the books obviously had a huge following over the decades Middle Earth wasn't really the household name it became after the films, even though I'd seen The Hobbit cartoon as a small child I couldn't remember anything about it by that point besides it was about wizards and dragons and stuff. So before I'd seen the movies going into the Hobbit I was trying to work out things like: where/when this MIddle Earth place was, the nature of it and what the wider world and people were like, etc. Thanks to the films, besides having some imagery to go by I also know what the world is like and the various races and civilizations in it as well as the rules that govern the franchise. Also there are all the online resources and wikis these days (plus I have a guide to Middle Earth book but it's not as good as the online resources) helping me keep all the names, events, references straight. It was less important in The Hobbit but now that I've gotten into LOTR (almost done with the first book) I find I need it. For every hour I spend in the book I probably spend 2 looking through wikis or my Guide To Middle Earth. But that's a good deal of the fun as far as I'm concerned.

 

Major LotR fan. I love all of J.R.R. Tolken's works.

 

Well I'm mainly finished with LotR, I'm done with the actual story part of the books and Frodo has sailed off to the West but I still have the Appendices to go. After that I'm not sure what I'm going to do, the suggested readings that I've seen say the next book should be The Children Of Hurin or The Silmarillion. It doesn't really matter which you do first. I feel like I should go with The Silmarillion next though. I'm a little hesitant because I have a little experience with it, it's actually the first (and one of the few) books I've ever just given up on. It was kind of a special case though because I discovered after an hour or two of confused reading that this wasn't the stand-alone Tolkien novel I somehow thought it was when I bought it. It was more of a supplement to the Middle-Earth books of which I had only read The Hobbit and seen 1 or 2 of the movies at the time. So I shelved it until the day I would finally read the LotR books, which didn't happen for about two decades and I had to pick up a new copy because that one is lost in time somewhere. But I read enough to get the idea (and I've heard talk of it over the years as being hard to digest) so I'm dreading it a little bit. Children Of Hurin looks a bit more like a traditional novel and I kind of want to read it first but I don't want to get into another Middle Earth story until I've read up on and understand the nature/past of the legendarium a little bit more and I'll get more of that from The Silmarillion from what I understand.

 

@NunbNuts Welcome to Tolkien's Universe! I started reading his works way back in 1973 as a 9 year old.....yeah seems like a millenia ago. LOTR is on my nightstand and I read and reread and rereread my favorite passages over and over again. I must have read The Scouring of the Shire 50+ times! Other favorites are the Voices of Saruman, The Ride of the Rohirrim, Many Meetings, The Council of Elrond......

 

Just finished Part 2 and will start Part 3 this afternoon on my way home. I doubt there is a book that I've read more often. I probably read the bible more, but I usually don't read it from beginning to end every time.
