    Hey The Cantina.

Today the french part of our fandom is sad. Roger Carel is dead on September, the 11th. He was 93.

Roger was the one who voiced our beloved C-3PO since ANH.
He also voiced numerous other characters: Asterix, Mickey Mouse, Kaa the python (Jungle Book), Jiminy Cricket (Pinocchio), Kermit the Frog (Muppet Show), Alf...

    Good bye good guy.
    See you there.
Give them all our kisses from below.

Sorry to hear about that. He was very important for you who grew up with the french translation.

I just think a little bizarre how they changed some characters of the original version:

    - Z6P0
    - Dark Vador
    - Chiquetabbac

    Do you know any other?

Yep. It's a question of lips position and movement.

The saddest of all is the "Death Star" that is called in french ANH "Etoile Noire", because "noire" ends on a "a" with a largely open mouth, that matches the english "death star". "Death Star" is literally translated as "Etoile de la Mort" that ends with a "o" and a mouth semi-closed, that does not match the open mouth of "star".

Another freaky one is "Falcon Millenium" that is translated in french ANH as "Millenium Condor", for the same reason : "condor" matches with "Falcon Millenium".

"Chiquetabbac" is the exact translation of "Chewbacca" : chew means "chiquer, mastiquer" and "bacca" comes from "tobacco" that is translated as "tabac".

But far beyond words, it is the voices that vary a lot from one film to another that are the problem. Vader's voice in ANH is not the same than in the other movies. C3PO voice differs since the Sequel because Mister Carel was no more able to voice it...

    Really didn't know about this!!!

I watched TFA with the fanfarre at Metz last year and it was great!
The only issue that I had with the movie when they called BB-8: bebè huit! It was funny to me and my wife.:D

In TFA there is a line from C3PO, exactly when Han and Leia reunite. 3PO says something like "Bonjour je suis C3PO, anciennement Z6PO" that means "Hello I am C3PO formerly called Z6PO"
I wonder what was the original line ;)

In ANH Yan (the french name for Han Solo) calls Chewie "Chico" : it's a nickame that directly comes from "Chiquetabac".
He will call him "Chouwi" (french writing for Chewie) from TESB.

Oh, there are some additional sad things that happened during the translation :D

    For example the "clone wars".
In the Original Trilogy, this term is used only once, in ANH, when Luke asks Obi Wan if "he fought the Clone Wars".
We had that the whole first trilogy, and we never had no idea about what it was. But when the Prequel came out, all was explained, and we got to know why "the clones".
Well. In french, the line turned into "Avez-vous fait la guerre noire" - always the same reason about lips sync: "noire" matches with "war". That line means "Did you fought the black war"? French casual viewers had any clue about "the clones" and the whole "clone wars" until AOTC came on screen. French readers of the Extended Universe were encoutering here and there the term "clones" and "clones war" but couldn't match them with the movies.

Chiktabba was the first name in french.
Han Solo was originally Yan Solo
Etoile Noire : Black Star instead of Death Star
    Millenium Condor

    It was fixed later.
