As if today's big reveal about the Game Of Thrones showrunners looking to work on a new series of Star Wars films wasn't enough, Disney CEO Bob Iger has just confirmed that multiple shows based on the Star Wars franchise will be coming exclusively to their new streaming service.

Disney is holding it's usual First Quarter conference call, and with it comes another big surprise as Disney CEO Bob Iger has revealed that a handful of Star Wars shows are being developed for the service:

It should be clarified that these are shows and not movies, meaning that there currently aren't plans to make direct-to-streaming movies for the service. But this is certainly great news - we already knew that a live-action television series was in development for the streaming service, but this presumably means that we'll be getting another animated series along the way - likely even more than one. Between the ongoing acquisition of Fox's assets and the sheer amount content that's being developed, it's becoming clear that Disney is about to become a force to be reckoned with when it comes to the realm of streaming - Netflix and Amazon, watch out!

Multiple shows? I don't know... Sounds like too much. For now I'd rather have one with a budget of a few. But let's say it's an animation, a live-action series and something for kids (like Forces of Destiny)... Such diversity could make it reasonable, but the plain announcement still feels like overkill at the moment.

Sounds reasonable and like something they're absolutely going to do. We also have to remember that all these projects that are anounced right now will be rolled out over an extended period of time and most likely won't drop at once.

Good point. Like seasons of major Netflix shows. They never drop at once.

The budget still concerns me. I just can't imagine live-action Star Wars on a budget of anything I've ever seen on TV/streaming.

You only have to look at all the Marvel shows on Netflix to know it makes sense for Disney to create multiple SW shows! If some are set in different timeframes & parts of the galaxy then it could work well as to not get samey. Even some might crossover if set within the same era.

I would also expect a new animated show too!

I'm throwing this out there as I have no idea but I'm assuming the GL "episodes" for his tv series were bought also. Maybe they will put those into production and expand on them?

At this point Bob Iger is a cartoon villain twirling his mustache holding a magnet up to my wallet

I think they could go with Underworld but they probably won't in favor of going with something original instead. At the very least, the ideas that were developed for Underworld ended up shaping Star Wars canon as we now know it.

I'll just do what I currently do with Netflix. I'll just wait until the shows are out and start a week trial and binge watch the show then cancel the subscription once i'm done. Rinse and repeat. (assuming the streaming service follows what Netflix does).

    Exciting news!

That's definitely the smart way to do it, but I'm just too lazy for that. :p
