    Cannot [LIKE] this comment enough.

The TPM soundtrack ranks right behind Star Wars & TESB in my book.

If I must be brutally frank, the Prequel films - especially TPM and AOTC - made me appreciate the saga as a whole and Lucas' talent for storytelling. In fact, the Prequel Trilogy made me appreciate the Original Trilogy a lot more than I used to. I cannot say the same for the Sequel Trilogy. Personally, I think it is a mess.

It's actually good as hell, so...

There are two mistakes. Gungans speaking basic and "killing" Darth Maul. Otherwise it's pretty fantastic tbh. Anakin blowing up the droid ship is goofy but it makes sense. George could have made him thirteen or fourteen and that would have been cleared up. It also would have made Padme seem less creepy. The movie takes place when she is 14 and he is 9 so, that's pretty weird. Okay so, I'll say three mistakes.

Yeah, for me what's so silly about that scene is Anakin slowly pressing all the exact right buttons, even putting the ship into auto-pilot "accidentally" and having it take him directly to the battle.

I think it could've been cool for him to pretend that was happening, but for him to actually be willingly joining the fight. We'd also get to see his piloting skills a little better that way. Then, he could still be instrumental in destroying the control ship (perhaps he's shot down and crashes inside like in the movie, or maybe in some different way).

Still, I do think the battle for Naboo is one of the best battles in the series. Honestly, I prefer it over Geonosis, Kashyyyk, and Utapau.

I saw TPM six times in the theater when it came out. LOVED it. Didn't like Jar Jar but whatevs, Star Wars was back! Yay! Then, I bought TPM on VHS, because rumor was that it would never be released on DVD. Strange rumor but that's what I had heard. Popped it in the VCR and started to watch. Shortly after Jar Jar was introduced I paused it to make a sandwich. Came back with sandwich, looked at screen, stopped movie and did something else. Tape is still at that spot 20 years later. Haven't felt the need to watch that movie again.

Now, for those that like or love TPM, I'm happy for you and wish I was among your ranks! I'm just not. I have no ill will towards those that like it though, just not my cup of tea.

TPM was special for me because it was my first on in a theater when i was barely 6 years old...if you think that it stinks, then you are no SW fan because the point was originality and bridging a gap to the OT, something that post-GL star wars has not had a chance to successfully achieve...the people who are in their mid to late 20s now are only now appreciating it, if only with the memes.

Same here, I wasn't a big Star Wars fan when the Prequels came out, I had watched all the OT movies when they came out and enjoyed them but they had faded from me, seeing them on the small screen had been underwhelming. I liked the Prequels, I like fabulous visuals and the art design on the Prequels is excellent, the sheer volume of invention, the fabulous creatures and settings, there is a clear story that runs through it. I now love the OT again.

This parallels me somewhat with the OT, watching them on small screen TV removed the magic they just seemed flat, when the PT came out I was not really a SW fan, but watching the PT on the big screen renewed my enthusiasm. Now I like the OT and PT a lot but sometimes I can't watch them one more time and have to give them a break, but when I come back there is both story, art, character and world building for me to enjoy.

I’m going to take a different view than many regarding the PT. TPM is the only PT movie I find remotely watchable these days despite its obvious flaws.

-It’s the only PT movie that captures the spirit of the OT. It has that sense of adventure that is missing in AOTC and ROTS.

-No Hayden Christensen. Sorry, but his portrayal of Anakin does NOT work for me so the whole Trilogy falls like a house of cards. I don’t know if Lucas is to blame for his direction or Hayden was just miscast.

-AOTC and ROTS take themselves too seriously. Yes they are darker movies because Anakin’s descent to the dark side, but those scenes are just cringeworthy. Anakin’s ultimate turn in ROTS is so anti-climatic.

-TPM has QuiGon, Duel of Fates, and the beginning of Palpatine. TPM is also shot in 35mm and holds up the best visually next to AOTC and ROTS.

-I often wonder what Episode 2 and 3 would have been like if Episode 1 didn’t get the huge backlash? Lucas obviously took the criticism to heart as they feel like he was to be more serious but forgot that SW is supposed to be fun.

No. He really did whatever he wanted to.
JarJar remained and became more valuable, and then there's the whole bit about sand and the love scene.

AOTC is pretty much the most widely disliked PT film anywhere you look that has a wide pool.

I'm right there with you, though.
    TPM is the best one.
AOTC drags for me, and ROTS just lacks gravity in odd ways. I can never really get into Anakin and Obi's fight, for example.
It just comes off too much like a cut scene from Wing Commander 4 (ironically starring Mark Hamill).
It feels too removed and distant where it should be intimate. Mostly because of the style of shooting, which I get and respect what Lucas was going for, but it still left it rather bit weak in power for me just like many of the silver screen films it was modeled after in its shooting.

The lack of refined CGI, which it was breaking boundaries with, lead to a wobbliness in the environment and physics.

Spider-man had given the ability to get gravity and weight to moving huminoid models better than before, but the interaction with the environment if that environment was also moving and also not practicle was really not there just yet in 2004/5.

So, to me, the whole scene feels a bit too close to the likes of Spy Kids' cgi physics.

I once suggested, to an old schoolmate who now runs a Hollywood vfx studio, that retro-skinning the PT to black and white in an old film look and sound to give it the view that Lucas was modeling from might be interesting.
His response was, "Anything would make those films better, honestly".

Lots of folks like ROTS though, and those who do like AOTC, PASSIONATELY like it.

    *shrug*

    Cheers,
    Jayson

Seems to me like a lot of people have come to appreciate TPM over the years that have gone. I Agree 100 % that it is superior to AOTC (which i just watched btw). TPM has it's problems for sure, but there's also the great music, Liam Neeson, the battle with Maul and the podrace. For the most part, I'm entertained through it. Can't say the same for AOTC unfortunately. Still love Revenge of the Sith personally, but I thought you had an interesting point with your example about how the movie was shot.

You are entiled to your “certain point of view.” However I must disagree with you. I rewatched TPM for the 20th Anniversary and I was pleasently suprised how good it was, more so than I remembered. I even enjoyed Jar-Jar. (fighter)(droideka)(vicious)

Same here. I can rewatch TPM but AOTC and ROTS I already give up. They are unwatchables.

TPM for me has the best visuals, the CGI and the new ideas for ships, droids and monsters.

Best soundtrack (one of the best of the saga).

Also the best acting (excluding little Annie).

Ok folks, we're going to go ahead and close this thread down as it really contributes nothing to good conversation, and merely bashes a 20 year old movie.
