Is it just me, or is there something very unusual happening with the compositing on SW Resistance?

There are many shots where characters have a very visible outline:

Since it doesn't always happen, I guess it's possible they do this on purpose for some reason - but I find it a bit distracting.

It looks to me like it's a deliberate stylistic lighting thing.

It's only primarily on one side, so I'd say it's meant to be a kind of highlight. It's not just a white outline all the way round the characters, so I think it's meant to suggest a light source.

If you look at the close up on the face of the last screenshot, the white like isn't an outline on the outside, but follows the very edge of her face. Her eye even overlaps it.

So yeah - it's a kind of back light effect.

This animation almost reminds me of a more advanced version of Microsoft Paint

I thought about the possibility that it might be intentional lighting - and my hope is that you are correct.

Still, although it only happens on one side in the last shot, it does happen in multiple directions on other shots.

I'm not necessarily saying it's a mistake - I'm just curious why it looks like that.

yeah, it's faux backlight to help the characters stand out against the environments.
it's always bothered me because i think the lines should have been harder, not softer.
but i get that they were trying to do something stylistically different. and most of the time it's fine.
