I've been wanting to talk about Dryden Vos for awhile now, and with the Blu-ray released I finally had another good look at him.

After seeing Solo twice in theaters, I was having trouble keeping track of the fluctuations of color in his scars / facial markings, as well as his eyes. I kept noticing the red eyes, but somehow I kept missing the darker scars. Here's some images showing the differences, as well as a snippet from the Visual Dictionary explaining that fluctuation:

    And from the Viz Dictionary:

Now, the reason I was so interested was because of the red eyes, and knowing what we all know about the Sith and the eye color change, I thought there were some subtle hints here about Vos. Maybe not that he was some powerful Sith Lord, as he never showed any force powers... But, somehow he had an ability to channel some "Dark Side" techniques.

With the reveal of his boss being none other than Darth Maul, I was even ready to double-down on this theory. Again, while not being force sensitive, surely there were a few tricks that Maul would have taught his next in command.

I am actually a little disappointed to see that it is primarily a stress-related feature, but I still think it is one of the cooler physical traits we've seen in a SW character.

I would love to somehow learn more about the relation between Maul and Vos. The way Maul finished his conversation with Qi'ra ("You and I will be working much more closely from now on") certainly hinted at a Master and Apprentice type deal, but it could just have been a confirmation of her rising in the ranks to replace Vos.

Anyone else have similar thoughts, or just anything on the character in general? Overall I loved the villain he played, and hope to see more like him.

Unfortunately I have to say Vos was a weak character and a even weaker villain for a Star Wars movie. You really notice that he was added later on. Furthermore it's another human like character. The SW universe begins to feel really small for me personally.

Paul Bettany did a good acting job though and the idea of his scars changing is also a neat idea.

I thought he was deliciously monstrous. From what I've read the original version was a man-lion thing? Makes me think of Ron Perlman in Beauty and the Beast. Granted I don't know what was cut, but I do have to say I'm glad he's so revoltingly human in the worst (or indeed, as a villain - best) possible way.

He wasn't a dark side-powered mutation. He had no robotic parts, he wasn't a fallen Jedi, he wasn't deformed, he didn't have horns, he wasn't a grotesque inhuman blob; he was charismatic and [scars-aside], good looking and above all, just utterly, wonderfully, moustache-twirlingingly horrid. It's something Star Wars has lacked for a long time. A Joe Pesci-in-Goodfellas-esque mafia-inspired demon of realistic human evil. Every second he was onscreen I hated him, and loved every second of it. Only Peter Cushing has out-done him in my opinion.

I can't speak for the scars and any fluctuations in their severity, but as a villain, I thought he was absolutely brilliant.

Every prequel villain had nothing to make you hate them, they were all cartoons and caricatures of what a 'baddie' is, even Maul was so one-note that it took the Clone Wars and Rebels to flesh him out, but Vos was just so monstrously human that I loved literally every second he was on screen. Next to Tarkin, he's the most wondrously horrible human being in the franchise if you ask me.

Great post, I love the way you phrased that. :D
It's easy to turn someone who looks like Maul into a villain. Or, someone in a suit / armor. I agree that Bettany did this masterfully, and I am really happy he was brought on board. I still would have loved to see Michael K. Williams in the role, sans the CGI get-up.

One of my favorite things about Vos was how quickly he seemed to make decisions, and yet be able to change his mind so quickly. I don't know if I would call it a positive or a negative trait, but given his status I'd be inclined to think that it works in his favor more often than not. For instance, the scene where Beckett, Han, and Chewie are negotiating for their life, Vos goes back and forth between "Kill them / wait" a couple times, and I think a villain who can make such snap decisions and be predictably unpredictable is very intimidating.

It was really fun to watch Vos go through the progressions of that scene.

The Dryden Vos we got in the final film was fantastic, for being what he was.. just a pretty regular, run-of-the-mill, egotistically psychotic bi-polar human. Paul Bettany did a great job in the role, so no complaints there. I just find his look to be a little boring and lacking in creativity. The character traits were all fine, but I think they would've fit much better with him being a corrupt Lasat, like they had originally planned.

    I agree with this completely!

His name really interests me. One of my favorite characters from the now legends Clone Wars graphic novel series was Quinlan Vos. Quinlan Vos was a Jedi that struggled with his brushes with darkness and was often used as an underworld informant and as a Sith infiltrator for the Jedi. He has a couple of storylines where he returns to his home planet of Kiffu to deal with Clan Vos and their move toward darkness, crime, and corruption. It would be an odd coincidence if Dryden Vos is simply a Vos from another world and another humanoid culture. Kiffars have the unique ability of their species to read the memories of inanimate objects through a technique called psychometry. Given the large number of objects of historic and mythical value in his study, I could imagine that would be an incredible wealth of memories and knowledge. Given that we often associate studies with personal libraries, perhaps he is reading these objects, including the sith holocron, as his books rather than traditional reading materials.

He was like a "meh"-Character for me. A walking Merch Figure with a bit to do.
However, he grew on me on my subsequential views. His uh, Scars were a neat Detail and i liked his Role. Would have preferred him over DM.
But i still imagine him as Barney Stinson's evil Brother somehow. (sorry)
