has there been any mention of whether Feyd appears in this film? And who plays him?

He's not in Part 1, unfortunately. Rumors claim his gladiator scene will open Part 2, and I'm stoked for that :D No mention thus far on who'll play him, though.

Sting was famously in Lynch version, so sticking with singers maybe Ed Sheeran! :D

Just got out of the theaters! I ALSO watched the 1984 Dune for the first time last night, so comparing the two has been a fun experience. (I read the book a couple of years ago; I found it to be a great experience but not really memorable for me.)

Overall, I really enjoyed both versions. Each has its distinct flaws and strengths, but both are fun retellings of Paul's story, and of those around him. The 1984 version was also a great primer for this 2021 version. Sure, the 2021 version was a great adaptation, but with the 1984 version being a little more true-to-text in certain plots (and super far off in others IIRC), it really helped me see why things were changed.

For example, in the 1984 Dune, Paul starts learning The Voice after the visit with the head Ur-Aes Sedai. Here, he's been training with The Voice for a while.

This version of Dune is a little more political as well - in the 1984 version, the characters just give the exposition for why they're doing this, laying the plot bare. Here it's given a little more nuanced, and the politics are more veiled.

Regardless, both films are beautiful, Hans Zimmer's score here is as quality as expected (not in my top 5, but maybe Top 10), and fans of Dune should be pretty pleased.

As a final note, Duke Leto is my favorite character in both movies.

(Also as two TRULY final notes:
    1. The fact that Denis Villanueve hasn't done a Star Wars film yet is both our biggest disgrace and our biggest potential hope. I high-key want to see a trilogy directed by Guillermo Del Toro, Denis Villanueve, and then capped off with Rian Johnson. Each film can be cowritten by each director along with Ryan Coogler.

    2. If Timothee isn't Batman in the next ten years, we've either done something very right with Robert Pattinson, or something very wrong.

I finally saw it. Loved it. It delivered what I needed to have delivered. Clarity. Sincerity. Relief. A huge sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. Quality and just flat out awesomeness. Dune franchise, here we come.

LOLz! Dune, obviously, but you knew that, mate ;) You're just being shifty and conspiratorial, like Piter De Vries!

Watched it last night and absolutely loved it.

The visuals are absolutely incredible. So beautiful, so epic. The worldbuilding is amazing, especially the level of detail which is mind blowing. The casting is perfect, the characters are well developed and interesting. I wasn't sure about Chalamet playing Paul, but he nailed the role. No emo teen vibes, either. The storytelling is quality. I particularly liked the pace of it - somewhat slow, but not too drawn out and not boring at all; it kept me glued to the screen throughout the movie. The musical score is eery and very fitting. The ending might seem a bit abrupt, but as it says at the start, this is Dune: Part1, and so it covers about half of the original book. The only negative about that is having to wait for years for Part 2 now, but other than that, I'd say that Villeneuve nailed it and managed to adapt the source material really well, engaging both readers and non-readers alike.

    Highly recommended.

Some interesting bits and pieces emerging about filmed, but excised scenes from the theatrical cut of Dune, which hints that a LotR style extended version may yet follow...

This also explains the slightly odd cuts from Leto dressing and preparing for the ceremony and later show to be exhausted by his attendance, but without the event being seen on screen... and the image below from Empire magazine's exclusive pics
    [IMG]

Similarly, it explains why (slightly drunken) Duncan is seen fighting Sarduakar in the hallways during the siege, while apparently wearing a dress shirt

One other morsel I've stumbled across was this (via IGN)

In a recent interview, Villeneuve revealed Halleck has lost a unique part of his storyline in the upcoming film.

He confessed: "I will say something to you guys... there's one thing that is painful for me. It's Gurney Halleck's baliset. It's something that I shot. It's something that exists. Josh [Brolin] was awesome, but for several reasons... I wasn't able to put it in Part One."

So, for now we just have to contend with the fact that the only evidence is Villeneuve's quote and this snippet from the upcoming Art & Soul of Dune book

By the Shai-Hulud, I have never needed an extended version more than I do one for Dune Part 1!

Been about 14ish hours since I got out of the theater.

To say I had low expectations for this wouldn't be quite right, but I did go in skeptical. Denis has been very hit or miss for me since he started venturing into Sci-Fi, I didn't like Arrival at all, I quite liked BR2049 but it never fully clicked with me and I've found it less and less enjoyable rewatches. Combine that with the fact that I knew next to nothing about the source material aside from some planet/character names, and the fact that the trailers didn't do much for me... I went in hoping I would at least get something worthwhile out of it.

After seeing it, all I can really say is...

I loved everything about it. Incredible to look at, incredible to listen to. The action kept me engaged which is kinda rare these days. It was one of the most fulfilling experiences I've had with a film in a very, very long time.

Incredibly happy to see the sequel get greenlit, and now with Denis saying he'd like to turn it into a trilogy... I really hope he gets to do it.

The only thing I've found disappointing coming out of this is learning about all the footage that wasn't used. I desperately hope we get an extended edition.

yet more cut content from Dune Pt.1!

Dr. Yueh (Chang Chen) gives Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) an old Orange Catholic Bible

Duke Leto and Gurney discover a gruesome chest with severed fingers of spice workers left by the Baron with a note that reads:
"My dear cousin Leto. Welcome to Arrakis. There’s a lot to learn. I thought I’d give you a few pointers.”

Surrounded by Sardaukar, Thufir Hawat (Stephen McKinley Henderson) awaits his fate in a scene with Piter De Vries (David Dastmalchian)

With each cut element revealed, my needed for an extended cut increases!

Ok fellas. I know that DV has been sticking to the books and that Guild Navigators are not seen until Dune Messiah. Though it's obvious that DV will continue to stick to the book in PT. 2, do you think he may stray a little as he did here and there in part one and allow us to see a navigator?

Hm... that's a difficult thing to speculate upon. I'll put my loose thoughts behind a spoiler tab as we're discussing the second half of the original novel, here.
There aren't that many places in the story, going forward, where Navigators could show up.

We COULD get a cut scene aboard a Highliner where Guild folk discuss the ramifications of the Fremen uprising and what it means for the precious spice trade. That COULD be a simple way to show-don't-tell how Paul Muad'dib is threatening to destroy interstellar economics, and all. But we would have to rely on previously un-seen characters to convey those plot points, which would be a bit weird. And also, it might be a lot easier to convey the idea using orginary guild agents, or even lawyers for the Spacing Guild making those claims. Or to have the Guild send someone a complaint off screen - "My Duke, we've received a secret communiqué from the Spaceing Guild. They're getting really pissed, milord." There is not real reason why a Guild Navigator need to be involved.

Another possible scene is the duel at the end, taking place in the presence of the Padishah Emperor and his court, which includes Guild agents and such. Again, there's no real reason to put a Navigator in the scene, unless, you know, you really want to show a Navigator.

I guess Villeneuve could also create new scenes, with Guild Navigators seeking an auidence with Muad'dib to plead for the spice to flow, but that's a bit of a stretch in the story.

To conclude, Villeneuve certainly changed and added stuff to Dune Part 1, and could do so again for Dune Part 2, but I can't really see a good reason for why to include a Guild Navigator. It could happen, but I'm leaning towards "no".

Wanring: I'm not well versed in the Dune bible.

    IMPRESSIVE. MOST IMPRESSIVE.

    1. That's one tiny ass bible.
    2. So that's really what was in the chest?
    3. Though I do like the edit of the film, I was surprised that they cut out Thufir's fate
