I've seen a lot of people complain how the Knights of Ren were used in the film, and while I did enjoy the scene I can also totally see how they came off as kind of chumps.

I think a big problem with the KoR in this film is how they compare to the Praetorian Guard in TLJ- they're dispatched by Kylo alone, partially without a lightsaber. Given the buildup that JJ planted and fans tended to, obviously there was going to be hype surrounding them, so I think people expected something more.

So, here's my suggestion to the Knights of Ren (admittedly without me knowing a ton of the lore about them given in the comics, yet)- don't do Praetorian Guard 2.0, because we already had that.

Instead, work them into the reason that the Sith are inherently hostile toward Kylo when he arrives on Exegol, patching the story even further.

    ___________________________________________________________________________

That's pretty much it, but this is a more detailed possibility for how this sequence of events could've potentially benefitted the film:

After revealing to Rey that she is a Palpatine, Kylo Ren becomes frustrated with the First Order and sets off to find her. Palpatine contacts Pryde and tells him of Kylo's intent to leave the First Order, and Pryde orders him detained aboard the Star Destroyer. Kylo begins to fight off the First Order, but the Knights of Ren arrive at his side and help him escape (he is their master, after all).

This infighting on the Star Destroyer causes a schism among the Stormtroopers, with some joining the Knights of Ren, confused on their own loyalties. Hux, a bit out of the loop, takes the opportunity to rally the rebelling stormtroopers to capture their own Star Destroyer, unaware that by finally rebelling he's actually ironically joined Kylo Ren's side (allowing for some Hux-esque humor when he finds out, yet it's far too late).

I think a sequence like this wouldn't need more than 5 minutes (especially with JJ's pacing) but it could've helped the film so much.

There were two ways to handle The Knights of Ren.

    1. Leave them alone as a line similar to "You fought in the Clone Wars?!" of ANH to play with later when you can make the Knights of Ren a big focal point in his rise to power.

    2. Build them into the story intrinsically as you have suggested. Using them to foster the connection with Exogol would have helped a lot.

Whenever I hear someone online giving their advice on problems and how to fix them; I'm sure their fixes sound to them like they're composing the Moonlight Sonata. But to me, it's sounds of a callback to this great scene:

At the risk of more clarinetting.

I would have them to have a bigger role. Especially with Kylo being the Supreme Leader they should have shown them as more crucial.

    More action sequences.
    1- Subduing Chewy
2- Why only stormtroopers in the Passana speeder chase.
3- Showing them alongside Kylo in the battle on Mustafar.

Showing them alongside Kylo on Exegol and bowing at the sight of Palpatine (making it clear that they saw him as the new master.)

The way to fix it is for fans not to get fixated on a cool uniform/armor/costuming. We had this in every trilogy and for characters that really didnt do much on screen.

Boba Fett and other bounty hunters
    Captain Phasma
    Aurra Sing
    Imperial Guards
    Knights of Ren

    To an extent, I guess.

There's nothing wrong with a cool uniform, but I guess there is a part of us that expects a perhaps unattainable achievement from minor characters that have them.

For instance, Captain Itano or Constable Zuvio- two extremely minor background characters that almost demand expanding on.

Constable Zuvio would have handed them their butts. I imagine. Whoever he is.

One scene I disliked of them was when they were on top of that cliff/rock, whatever and the camera is panning around them like some 80's rock video. It was silly.

    Yep.

It's as much a trope in Star Wars as anything. And their line of introduction doesn't NEED expanding in the film. That's a very modern thing where every line like that HAS to be expanded upon. Some threads can just be left undone for other times. It's okay for mystery.

Yeah I got the feeling that JJ was saying "Thought the helicopter shot at the iris out of TFA was cheesy? Check this out!"

After the KOR scene, all I could think about was Rian Johnson’s quote about them, and started laughing.

“I guess I could’ve used them in place of the Praetorian guards but then it would feel like wasting them because all those guards had to die. And if Kylo had some kind of connection to them it would’ve added a complication that wouldn’t have helped the scene… Truth is, I just didn’t see a place for them in the movie.” Source

Nah... what we got was enough. The KOR where nothing more then a cool background for the movie. They were mentioned in TFA, and we saw them in this movie. They filled their role as hencemen for Ren, and then logically turned on him when he turned to the light side. Their fight with Ben was a simple story telling element used to show that Ben was indeed a good guy now. That's all they were needed for. Anything else would have been a pointless use of screen time as there were much more important story elements to show the audience.

So they weren't underused, they were used perfectly to serve the story we got.

Don't forget the Sith Fleet and Sith Troopers!

Truthfully, I don't expect anything when new troopers or ships are introduced. But I like them and think they're a small part of what makes Star Wars, well, Star Wars. They can add excitement and fun to a new place (U-Wings changing how we view battles, Gorilla Walkers proving that the F.O. is learning from past mistakes, Scout Troopers and their bikes to provide a fast and fun forest fight in flight in ROTJ), but mostly they're useless.

I guess we thought the KoR would be different because Abrams seemed really excited about them (showing an interest in their backstory, having all the concept art and the weird ForceVision scene) but couldn't fit them in. And also because they were Darksiders that weren't Sith, and that's always a fun and creative thing. It's why the Nightsisters are so cool. But then they were used like everything else. And that's not surprising, just disappointing. I was excited about Charles Soule's new comic before TROS, even if I wasn't the largest fan of Kylo Ren. But now...maybe I'll pick it up after it's complete, but I honestly don't care as of right now.

One might ask what the KOR we’re doing on Exegol at the end. I like to think that the KOR were actually acolytes of the Sith rather than just servants of Kylo. That is why they were so quick turn against Ben when he arrives.

Kylo and the KOR should have been the main villains of TROS. If I had to make TROS, then I would have personified one KOR. For example I would have used a female KOR who has a crush on Kylo (or at least she has a crush on the Supreme Leader's power). As soon as Kylo gets redeemed, she takes the place of the main villain.
The funny thing is Colin Trevorrow did something quite similar in his version of EPIX.

Another possibility would have been that Hux orders the KOR to kill Kylo.
