Episode 3 First Thoughts (I'll do a secondary look when I watch the episode on a screen larger than my phone):

This show is balancing the brutality of the Empire with the Dad Batch storyline pretty well, and I hope they can keep it up.

While I like Evil Crosshair, I'm a little afraid the show is going to go the Winter Soldier Redemption Arc route. This isn't a bad route, as victims having to atone to their own victims is a real thing; and Star Wars doing any sort of atonement arc in its works is a MASSIVE step forward. But at the same time, I still want Star Wars to move past the "it wasn't you, it was XYZ" trope. That trope can be effective, but mostly for having characters foster guilt over situations mostly out of their control, not actual remorse or repentance for something they did. The Winter Soldier Redemption Arc worked because said character was working through the actual trauma of his actions. If The Bad Batch isn't going to show that trauma, instead opting for guilt, then...well it's not a meaningless arc, because self-forgiveness is ABSOLUTELY important, but it'd be less impactful to me than it otherwise could have been.

There are a lot of people who could probably learn a lesson about the nature of atonement and how difficult forgiveness and reconciliation can be (but why we may need to try anyways*) if Star Wars was brave enough to handle it.

Or who knows, maybe Crosshair will die, free of the control of the trip and become a martyr...like every other Star Wars villain who turns good right before they die...

*Christians are called to forgive, but true forgiveness is HARD, especially in today's culture.

I just like the idea of Crosshair maybe being groomed for mentoring the first generation of Storm Troopers. So . . . the trooper with the BEST aim in the galaxy is going to be responsible for the troopers with the WORST aim in the galaxy? Mmm, poetic irony, yummy :D

"I can't make a shot, but I remember what my old commander once said, 'good soldiers follow orders.' Now come on, let's shot this weird magical glowsword wielding person who has already killed dozens of us already!" - Some Stormtrooper, somewhere.

Great episode but damn, Wrecker was useless! What planet was this though? It's awesome and reminds me of Coruscant in Attack of the Clones

land of the blue goobers. I feel this episode showed the clones combat without droids, where they would just use their skills and training, not tactics like fennec shand. I hope wrecker learns and later charges shand, she tries the same thing, but he jukes her and chucks her out a window

This episode was pretty much a filler, the set-up an excuse to get the gang into trouble. That said, it isn't half bad, just... not all that interesting, really. The most important part is, obviously,
Fennec Shand's introduction and the plot-escalating insight that Omega is being hunted by Bounty Hunters now

An enjoyable, but forgettable episode, except that the side characters are rather cool in this one.
The droid extras are cool, the Gran merchant is cool, the unscrupulous Sullustan harbormaster (or whatever you'd call him) is cool, and... the Aqualish trucker listening to funky trance music? All of the 1 seconds he was in the episode was just plain AWSOME! :D

I can dig. Pointless Star Wars is still better than 99% of popular entertainment :)

Filler but that's not a bad thing. It was still fun and not completely a waste because of the action and Fennec.

How old is Fennec suppose to be here and in Mandalorian? Isn't there like a 40 year gap between Bad Batch and The Mandalorian?

Yeah absolutely. The city and the speeders flying by. It is called Pantora, if my memory serves me well. Whenever I hear those police speeders and their cirens, I immediately think of Courscant and now Pantora. Its kind of what my brain thinks of now when I think of any futuristic city now. I hope thats the future. Can you imagine a real life courscant.

This was by far my least favorite episode, but it's still gorgeous, and the show is worth watching it for that alone. Well, that and MIng-Na Wen. Ming-Na is a treat whenever she appears!

A side-effect of Bruisers in Filoni's shows. A lot of muscle space, but not much outside of that (in terms of character or development). Someday we'll get a character like Toph...someday...

I was wondering myself at first! I think she's mid-to-late twenties? Because Ming-Na Wen is 57, so I can see Fennec being anywhere from her age to a few years older than her. It's about 29-30 years between this and The Mandalorian (ROTJ is about 24-25 years post-ROTS IIRC, and Mando is 5 years post-ROTJ).

Ming-Na Wen is 57? Whoa. She must have some good body lotions and exercise a lot. I honestly thought she was like 40-45yo and I was also so sure it was a fact that it was 30 years between ROTS and ANH

I too wondered about Fennec's age. She is young both in The Bad Batch and The Mandalorian. How is it possible?

Oh, and by watching The Bad Batch I discoverd that in Star Wars there are cameras. I know that some cameras were present also in A New Hope but I did not recognize them.

I assume Fennec Shand is more or less Ming-Na Wen's age in The Mandalorian? Which makes her in her late 50s for Mando (c. 9 ABY), and in her late 20s in The Bad Batch (c. 19 BBY)-ish.

Hm... a thought came to me (yeah, that's rare, I know):
I wonder if there's more to Fennec Shand in BB than what we think? She doesn't seem to be an outright bad guy character, and (as far as I can remember from the episode) she didn't try to ever harm Omega. Of course, that could simply be because the bounty on Omega stipulates her being brought back alive, but perhaps the bounty that Fennec is out to claim was not placed by the Empire, but rather by Nala Se? We know Nala was protective of Omega, so perhaps she has sent a hunter after Omega to bring her back to safety?

    Just a thought.

What’s “filler” is kind of subjective though, yeah? It largely depends on your personal investment. If what you chiefly care about are the characters, then this episode had a lot of that. If you don’t have interludes like this that put stress on interactions and defining personality, humanizing the central figures, then all you get is empty plot - it’s just a bunch of stuff that’s happening.
And it’s leader is this guy named Chairman Papanoida.
    Hmm, looks familiar :)
It’s the risk of any brawny protagonist in an ensemble: The Worf Effect. Establish a new antagonist as a genuine threat by having them easily defeat your toughest player. Pretty classic stuff. Hopefully they don’t go to that well too many times though and diminish the character’s weight.

It's roughly twenty between ROTS and ANH (Luke and Leia were born at the end of ROTS, and are 19 in ANH) and thirty between ROTJ and TFA (Kylo Ren is born within a year after ROTJ, and TFA takes place roughly 29 years later).

Agreed, but I still feel there are ways around it, although they may use one of those ways later on. To use the ATLA example (which ultimately isn't fair since ATLA is one of the greatest shows ever created*) - Toph is one of the best and strongest characters in the show, but when Azula shows up, the villain doesn't need to beat Toph in one-on-one combat to establish her as a threat - heck, in her first episode Azula ultimately loses to Iroh, but is still seen as the scariest villain in the show. Toph isn't invincible because of the situations she's later put into (i.e. the cage at the end of Season 2, or anytime water is involved). She's also made great because her of dynamics with the rest of the cast - from her character and personality clashes with Katara and Aang, to her crush on Sokka, Toph becomes more than just "the bruiser" of the group. Right now, Wrecker is just that. He's a more hyper version of Zeb, and while Zeb had his moments, there was so little that he did that couldn't be done by other characters.** There's no indication that Wrecker will become Zeb 2.0, but there's no reason to prove that he won't yet.

*But all animated shows should strive to achieve that level of greatness; this is especially true for Star Wars shows, since they only have one degree of separation.
**The only thing I could think of is his relationship with the Lasat people, and even then, it didn't have to be specifically Kallus involved or even the planet of Lasan. The whole Enemy-Mine situation could have happened to any of the other members of the cast, and the results could have been the same. Take it even farther and let Hera know who Kallus is in Season 3, and you can have a whole little sub-arc about trust and secret-keeping. (Admittedly this works better for Kanan and Hera, but it could work pretty effectively for either adult and teenager combo too.)

I hope we get more animated shows using that same animation style. Its clear people love it. Compare the animation of Star Wars Resistance with Cw, Rebels, and BB. Then check popularity. Animation and the popularity are likely linked. That classic animation style is so classic, amazing, and nostalgic.
