Saw this as a question on Resistance Broadcast today and thought it'd be a great thread.

Putting aside the question of whether Episode X should happen, I want to hear your story pitches. If the Saga continued, where would it go next?

I would want the story to do set up some of the things I wanted the Sequel Trilogy to do. But of course, with the twist that they spin out of the Rey/Poe/Finn story instead of the Luke/Han/Leia story.

It would be great to see Rey in a mentor role to a younger protagonist. But not like a Yoda/Luke relationship, where the mentor plays a minor role. More like the prequels, where Obi-Wan and Anakin share equal billing as a master/apprentice team.

As for villains, I would want a new embodiment of the Dark Side. Up until this point, the Dark Side has pretty much stayed hidden behind a front, with the Sith using other entities (the Separatists, the Empire, the First Order) to hide their activities. I would love to see a Dark Side faction totally unfettered. I could imagine a charismatic new leader who chooses to break with the ways of the Sith, denies the rule of two, and empowers an uprising of dark side users.

Give these villains a more direct line to the dark side than even the Sith had, so that the conflict feels closer to the heart of Star Wars. To me, that's one way to make this feel like something that actually belongs in the Saga. Don't make this story a simple "And then this happened." Make it have real consequences for the galaxy, even for the nature of the force.

But those are just some of my ideas. What would you want from Episode X?

Old Republic. Not only would this be interesting but we would go into depths of Star Wars that have never been touched on before in the 9 films. Also, we would be able to experience a movie or trilogy without the Skywalkers which would just be fun and interesting. We would be introduced to so many jedi and sith. Maybe a whole new Jedi council or organization of some sort. We would really be able to see something amazing before the prequels and the birth of Anakin Skywalker take place. Also, I would want ro canonize sith troopers because they look really amazing and I’m sure the costume designers would kill it! Im also all down to see some all out battles between Jedi amd Sith. We would be introduced to so many new and interesting planets, characters, and subjects. Thats always welcome for me! But, I really hope that this adds to the Skywalker Saga instead of a new whole saga. So this is my pitch on an Episode X or any new trilogy at that. :)

    Agree.

But, didnt we have that in the Sequels with Snoke? He was not a Sith but a dark side user.

Star Wars Episode X - The Return Of Ben Solo (working title)

    Vague story pitch:
Rey is training a new generation of Jedi, she also trains Finn. Poe is training new recruits for the army of the republic. Some day a new threat emerges (as it always does), and our heroes are outmatched mercilessly. Maybe Poe even dies in the first 20 minutes of the movie to set the stakes.
But to make a long story short- while Rey was training Jedi, she was also looking for a way to bring back Ben. Now she has even more reason to do so. At the end, she succeeds and Ben returns.

    Alternate story pitch:
19 years have past since the events of TROS. Rey has a child. You probably wonder who's the father. Easy- Ben Solo! What?! How's that possible? Well, it turns out, Ben did more than just gave his life power. Force healing is a pathway to some abilities some consider to be unnatural... Why souldn't it be?
Now this child wants to learn more about his past and his father. So, he goes on an adventure to bring is father back. It's kinda similar to the plot of 'Pirates Of The Carribean 5'.

I'm pretty sure this was retconned, at least functionally. He's a Palpatine clone, and he's Palpatine's puppet, so effectively he's a Sith. I'm also not sure if it was ever said in canon that Snoke is not a Sith. Was this from a book or movie, or was it just something JJ said?

There are a couple of thoughts I've had, but all require more work done in the EU material than I honestly trust to be done well at this point.* But I'll try to explain.

My original idea involved Mandalore being the antagonists. They would have been silent during the ST, biding their time and replenishing their numbers. They would augment their regular Mandalorian army with specialty Force Troopers - special troopers that have been augmented with Midichlorians in order to gain a sort of extra connection to the Force. They'd never be true Jedi or Force Users, but they'd be sharper, stronger, and more agile than any other trooper seen before. This would also explore the Knights of Ren, explaining that they were Mandalore's answer to the Jedi and Sith. But long ago, the Knights lost their master, Ren. Now, they await the day for Ren to return. At first they believed this to be Revan, and swayed all of Mandalore to his side. Next, they believed this to be Obi-Wan, The One Who Forsook His Destiny, but he turned out to be something else entirely.** They then believed it to be Kylo, but he led them to ruin. Now, they have faith in a new person, and they will burn the galaxy down to ashes if it means Ren rises.

I like this idea, since it can call back to previous eras in Star Wars while adding its own thing. But that means a lot more Mandalore or a lot less Mandalore, and I'm not sure either could be done well. Besides, after TROS, interest in the Knights of Ren has probably decreased a lot.

My other idea involves Luka Skywalker, daughter of Finn and Rey Skywalker.*** (I've also seen some cool fan art that someone did for a character of the same concept. I'll share it below)

Anyways, Luka and her friends would be on a planet, probably doing Jedi Padawan stuff. They'd be attacked by raiders (or worse, Republic troopers), spurring Luka's friend to embrace the Dark Side of the Force and go on a Hero's Journey prioritizing the Dark Side. Luka's goal would be to stop him.

I see the OT as the original story, the PT as a sort of deconstruction, and the ST as a fractured reconstruction. In Episode X and the Future Trilogy, I'd want to see an inversion. Let's follow someone who's fully on-board with the Dark Side. We'd watch this character go from this burgeoning first steps on the Dark Side to fully embracing it by the end with no pulls to the Light. There'd probably be truce with the good guys by the end.

The two above ideas could also be combined, but I'm not sure fans want to see another Chosen One story in Star Wars. Besides, there are a lot of ways that the Dark Chosen One can go that doesn't have to be linked to Mandalore. (I do have an idea for one sort of saga like that, but that's a story for another time.) Maybe the whole story will resolve with the return of the Night Sisters, facilitating a sort of Force War/Sengoku (Warring States in Japan) Era for the fifth trilogy.

In my head the fifth trilogy is almost always a sort of Force War, but that means that sometime between the ST and FT other Force Sensitive groups would have to have been built up. I had a cartoon idea covering this called Star Wars: Revelation. It planned to go over some of the other mysteries of the series, including the Knights of Ren, Snoke, and other things. (And yes, I even worked a version of Darth Jar Jar into it. It was awesome.) I ended up cannibalizing parts of that story, and putting some of the more important things in my latest ST Revision draft. But enough of the original format - along with some new ideas - remain that would enable multiple Force groups to return and become major players in the fifth trilogy.

*I like the EU just fine, but it relies too much on fake-outs and red herrings right now to be trusted to tell a meaningful story that fans believe would actually pay off in a meaningful way.
**This would tie into Obi-Wan's movie trilogy as well as Star Wars: Revelation in some pretty neat ways.
***I wasn't the first person to come up with the name, nor will I be the last; it's like how dozens of Naruto fanfiction stories had Naruto's father named Arashi before the name was actually revealed, or how there were dozens of ideas floating around about what a Sasuke/Sakura child would look like before we saw Sarada.

Here's my take on an opening crawl for Episode X...

After reaching the distant and mysterious planet Exogol, REPUBLIC NAVIGATORS have discovered vast spaceroutes to new, unexplored regions of the GALAXY. Rival corporations, gangs, and pirates race to plunder riches of Tabannic, Spice, and Kyber from newly discovered systems. Outer Rim systems serve as bustling springboards to the new FRONTIER as the fragile REPUBLIC tries to maintain a semblance of order.

Though open to explorers for nearly twenty years, the FRONTIER has not shown any signs of life. A strange monument discovered on the distant planet SEMANA has caused great excitement and speculation across the known GALAXY. The GALACTIC CONSUL has dispatched a team of experts on a diplomatic mission to investigate.

Meanwhile, deep below the surface of CORUSCANT, Jedi Master REY SKYWALKER makes a startling discovery…

    Episode X:

Picks up 5-10 years after TROS. This is the start of of a new society. There are no more big-scale galactic conflicts with star destroyers or super-weapons. The problems are localized, skirmishes on how/where to establish the New-New Republic (or whatever you want to call it.) Dirty politics persist, assassination attempts are rampant. All the while, the galaxy has an internal “war” over who’s qualified enough to lead. The Jedi order is established to keep star systems from breaking the system apart. Thus, Rey and her students are important. The struggles within the new Jedi order reflects the confusion encapsulating the galaxy. There are fierce disagreements from within the order. Many do not listen to Master Rey and attempt to break off into their own splinter groups. There are NO sith, no Knights of Ren, no pirates and smugglers (or at least not as the main villains.) The villains are from within the political system. The Villains are those we think are our friends. Depending on whether Episode X expands to a trilogy with XI and XII, eventually, the main heroes explore Vader and Palpatine and what caused the downfall of the Republic in the first place. The heroes right the wrongs of the past. There is total unity. The sickness which is the dark side, once present in the Sith and the political system, is weeded out entirely. There is peace again. The End.

Fill in all the gaps with cool original characters with cool original designs. Above all, keep it a family soap opera with family trees and character twists and turns. As George Lucas said before he walked away from his own saga: “People don't actually realize it's actually a soap opera and it's all about family problems – it's not about spaceships.“

I find it very difficult to pitch an Ep.X as the crucial point is not, "oh, nice, let's see Rey & Finn & R2 & Ghost Luke again!", but rather what the problem in the galaxy is going to be; i.e. the crux is the antagonists. Stories are born out of conflict, and the crucial decision then is, who're the bad guys going to be... and how and why.

There are a few typical routes one could take here, including:
    1) An established antagonist returns again, this time with even bigger trouble in their arsenal and possibly a devestating twist. (This is essentially the ST route - the Force parts)
    2) The past victory birthed new problems, with former friends becoming enemies and society fracturing from within. (This is ALSO essentially the ST - the political parts)
    3) A completely new threat emerges that we haven't seen yet; a new antagonist for a new day. (This would be the Yuuzhan Vong route)

Even a ST fan like me has to agree that bringing Palpy and palpy-problems back for a fourth Saga series would be a bit of a stretch. I think most of us agree that we're done with that by now, yes? So, 1) is out.

Route number 2 could work in virtually any scenario involving established heroes, adding tension by twisting/corrupting former cooperative relationships into opposition and enimity. I think that this is hardly enough to base the entire conflict of Ep.X on, let alone a new series/trilogy, but it could work well as a side-conflict to highlight the main drama.
--That said, I think @Use the Falchion's idea of basing a future conflict around Mandalorians going bad has some potential. They are a faction loved by fans, well-established in SW lore, and they are awesome enough to pose a credible threat. This could work, although I'm concerned that merging Mandalorians with Sith would contract the SW setting rather than expanding it... But yes, this is quite interesting and good food for thought!
--Personally, I'd also like to see an expansionist Hutt Hegemony story, although there would have to be something extra beyond that (i.e. the Force connection).

As for 3), that is obvioulsy the simplest route to take. Just invent some new menace -- hopefully based on the old fairy tale/folklore cycles/mythology elements that inspired Lucas in the first place -- and pit Rey & Co. against that. The problem here, which, of course, is central, to all attempts at continuing the Skywalker Saga, is why would you need to bring Rey & Co. into this? Why not take the new threat and create new heroes along with it? I.e. expanding the settinga and franchise? While bringing back Daisy & John etc. would certainly tickle a large segment of the fan base, they are also, presumably, very expensive actors at this point, and they might even require hefty bonuses to come back. Finding new faces to champion is what Star Wars does best, and it is presumably also a lot cheaper, not to mention fresher, way to go. But this ties in to the entire "why do an Ep.X in the first place", and is beyond the scope of this topic.

I really don't know what to make of an Ep.X... Nothing I can come up with in my wee brain seem to work smoothly for Rey & Co. Creating another Star Wars, set in a different time/location/conflict is no problem, but finding a story to continue the Skywalker Saga is hard.

Wouldn't it be the same issue as to why the Big 3 were included. If you chose a timeframe to close to the ST you can't leave them out, because Rey is a Jedi and maybe by that time even Finn eventually is one. Guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy, what good reason would they have to not show up and save the day?

Yes, except that there were heaps of history and branding and "promise" about bringing the Big 3 back, going all the way back to the 70s. There's none of that for the new heroes (unless you count that at one point Lucas was talking about 12 movies in the Saga, even though this was never a big "thing" in the franchise; 9 was the consistent movie count from the start). You COULD absolutely set a story in the years or decades after TRoS, but there is not as much "need" to do so as there were with the original cast, which had decades worth of demand for doing so.

But again, I was going off topic by questioning the... um... "legitimacy" of doing an Ep.X in the first place. That's not what the topic was supposedly about. My main point is that it's difficult to dream up a continuation of the Skywalker Saga now that the Skywalker Saga is over.

I actually think the high republic stuff could have been an ideal setup for movies post-TROS.

The new Jedi order (lead by Rey) are basically sent to explore the unknown regions (rather than being protectors/peacekeepers) and seek out potential threats...so the whole First Order/Palpatine/Sith Fleet thing doesn’t happen again.

The known galaxy is protected by the New (New) Republic army (lead by Poe).

Make them stand alone films that tie together (rather than a traditional episode 10, 11, 12). one following Rey and the Jedi, one following Poe and the republic army and one following Finn (who’s somewhere in between a Jedi and a general) on their own separate missions...then have a big crossover film were the plots of the three films collide.

We could spend the next century with only pre Clone Wars Material. The time gap between the beginning of the force to the prequels is much larger than the prequels to the ST. The best part is that most of it has no lore. For example, there are like 9000 years before the Ruusan Reformation or something and nobody knows what happens then. The earliest historical event in the Star Wars universe is the Force Wars of Tython, fought with force-strengthened metal swords. There is next to no lore about anything that happened there, so they could go crazy and not offend anyone.

I think it depends on what the conflict is and where these characters are. If Finn and Rey are known entities, making sure things are all quiet on the western front of this conflict, while our story takes place on the eastern front, then we can side-step their involvement for a time.

Or maybe we can pull a TLJ, in which the new characters go to the old ones for help, and the old ones refuse. For Finn and Rey as Jedi, it would be easy for them to do so depending on the nature of the conflict. If they saw getting involved as a political move, they may be hesitant to do so.

You know, that could lead into some interesting conflicts. Imagine that there was a situation where Poe had to lead some Republic forces into battle. He asked the Republic for more help, but they refused, strangled by bureaucracy; he asked his Jedi friends to get involved, but they refused, stating that Jedi cannot become political; and finally he asks for remnants of the Sith Empire (or some other Dark Side group...preferably some other Dark Side group), and they AGREE. So Poe lives, forsakes his friends, and now is trying to bring down the system he helped set up (and if people want a Darth Caedus sort of character, he's doing it all to shine light on a corner of darkness that the Republic overlooked, in hopes of NOT having another First Order/Sith Empire rise).

Nothing that goes backwards that retcons, retcons. Let the dead remain sleeping. Maybe an actual film about the actual force could be intresting. Learning more about Kyber. Maybe if the force became ill or started to die. Something around the cosmic force. Maybe someone could tap into the force and use that energy to harness some kind corrupted evil living entity that doesn't need to be human so that the galaxy starts to rot and die. We saw that Luke died due to running out of force energy and we saw that Palpatine stole force energy to recoup life. I could see that as natural progression of story angle which could carry on into episode X. I don't think you need some form of sith or sith archetype for this it's something different. Maybe Rey and the gang learn about ancient prophecies and this entity is going to bring the fall of darkness and the gang have travel to pockets of the galaxy that are still empire leaning philosophers who don't like Jedi. The stormtroopers becoming more of a corps mission or even more of a policing unit. So the stormtroopers are still there but less of a military legion doing things like building bridges and delivering medicine. They would still come after interlopers that don't come from their planet or disturbing the peace so to say.

Episode 10,11,12 should be set 25 years after Episode 9 and should center around Rey Skywalker’s 2 kids (male and female). So you can extend the Skywalker Saga from a certain POV. Then you can have cameos with the ST cast, with alittle age makeup.

I think the overall plot should stay away from Republic vs Empire, stay away from turning to the Darkside/redemption and actually go smaller in scale.

I would just love 3 movies about Rey’s kids and their friends from the new Jedi Academy fighting the fight for the galaxy, much like Solo movie type of plot about the underworld of the galaxy. I know that it will turnoff some fans cause they like when SW goes big, but what draws me to SW is always the small stuff.

Great idea. This is exactly what I have been thinking of. To have the ST cast in a PT type plot would be great. There is no reason why we can't have political plot with lots of 'chess' games and great action. I was actually thinking that after a brief time of peace planets are back to fighting for power. And even one faction might approach Rey and invite her to take the throne for peace.

Also a 5-10, will ensure that the leads are not too old. But I want it to involve the original ST 3 that was intended, Rey, Finn and Ben. They will have to find a way or a reason for Ben to be back:

I wouldn't make an episode X. at this point new "episodes" are just going to cause more temper tantrums and false beliefs of ownership over Star Wars.
New movies from here out should be independent of the "saga" and be their own new things so we can finally expand the world.

This would make sense because I just notice that Episodes 1 through 9 on physical 4k box don't have their respective episode numbers listed, just the title of the Episode.
