Had TFA and TLJ pleased fans, would TROS be the end?

Had The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi more so pleased fans and been more financially successful, would The Rise of Skywalker be the end of the Skywalker Saga?

This is of course hypothetical, depending on the writing, creative process, and overall enjoyment by fans of the previous two saga films, could we have expected the Skywalker story to end at Episode IX? Or could there have been more?

Please don't say you can't please everyone. The simple concept is had the previous two saga films been more respected and lucrative, could the films have gone on? Was there a potential plan in place for X, XI, and XII, and better yet, was there even a plan for VIII and IX after VII?

What could we have gotten had it been a perfect scenario?

There's always potencial to go on with the Skywalker saga. And I think this will happens in 10 or 15 years. I would love to see an older Rey or an older Ben Solo in the future (if they keep alive after TROS).

I might be mistaken here, but I think KK said pretty early on, that the new trilogy would be to wrap up the Skywaker Saga. Again I might misremember that but my understanding has always been, that the Skywalker Saga would end with IX.

TFA still holds the record for domestic box office.

I'm pretty sure they will come up with episodes X, XI and XII at some point after the D&D trilogy and the Rian Johnson one, if it happens.

TROS will have to be a major flop financially for it not to happen.

Whether or not you were pleased or not varies from person to person for sure. As for box office expectations, as another has suggested, TFA is still the domestic box office champ and TLJ despite not meeting the ridiculous expectations some put on it (it was highly unlikely to do better than TFA numbers), it did very well and it stands to reason Disney was happy with the results.

    I don’t think that’s a concern.

I don't think, TRoS will beat the box office of TFA, TLJ maybe...
Could be wrong, I have no idea what the projections are.

I don’t know that the numbers are available but I’ll look later.

There’s no way TRoS will beat TFA. TLJ? Maybe. Solo? Absolutely!

I don't know how much more "financially successful" you can get with TFA and TLJ, lol. At that time, TFA was the highest grossing movie of all time. TLJ made 1.3 billion. So, what the hell do you consider "financially successful"? Yes, the fact that you can't please everyone is a valid argument.

That's a story question as much as it is a business question. Story-wise, I'd argue that you need to have a Skywalker for it to be part of the Skywalker Saga. That said, the only living Skywalkers we know about right now are Leia and Kylo Ren. Leia won't be around for the next series, unfortunately, and I can't see Kylo surviving the transformation back to Ben.

If people suggest Rey could continue the story then that implies that she is a Skywalker in some way. Like Wagner's Ring Cycle, the Norse epics, and similar sagas that provided the influence for the Skywalker Saga, this story is one about a family through its generations as it wrestles with the consequences of an "original sin" bu an early ancestor that continues to cause problems for the family through the generations (see the story of Sigmund and the Volsungs). If we were to continue the story in a new trilogy with Rey as the heart of it and say that it is part of the Skywalker Saga, we are then saying either Rey is a Skywalker by blood or that her child is a Skywalker. Considering how many pages of debate there are on her origins and whether she should come from a common family is one thing, but the alternative is that Reylo not only happens but happens in such a way that a child comes from it.

I'm perfectly fine with IX being the end of this family's story. Bring on a new saga, new stories, and new eras.

3.4 Billion between TFA and TLJ is pretty damn successful and pretty damn pleasing to fans, maybe not all fans, but not 1 Star Wars film is pleasing to all fans.

Would it have continued? No. It needs to come to a conclusion. It is time for new era, new characters, new situation. That was always going to be the case.

    This entire question is nonsensical.

    A) This really isn't the end. It's just a marketing gimmick. Does anyone really believe we won't see Chewie/Finn/Rey/R2D2/BB-8 ever again?
    B) They've been talking about making films in new eras since before The Last Jedi was released.
    C) The Force Awakes and The Last Jedi were both hits with critics, fans, and the box office.

The idea that IX is being marketed as the end because the other two films failed is comical. It's not a serious thing to discuss.

I have said this before, this is the end... until it isn't. They'll come back to it in a decade. They'll probably do some other stuff and then for the 50th anniversary (or maybe the 60th) they'll do another Skywalker trilogy. I think it depends on how IX does. If it makes TFA style money, then it will be back sooner rather than later. If it does Rogue One money, then later. If it did the unthinkable and bombed like Solo... I shudder to think what would happen.

And add that in 15 or 20 years the adventures of Rey and his friends will have a weight and importance to the young ones that are growing old with the ST like the CT had with us.

It wasn't pleasing to some fans. It was pleasing to most. It's not the end. Only the end of the Skywalkers

TFA domestic box office defense is useless.

The Last Jedi made a measly $2.4 million its second weekend in China and was pulled immediately after.
    ($31 million compared to Endgame's $614 million)

So now, in a thread where it's perceived that the saga is ending because TFA and TLJ "didn't do well" we are throwing out US box office numbers and comparing the Chinese market (where it's historically been low) to another franchise completely.....

This makes total sense when you put it that way.

It doesn't matter how good TROS is - the loud, fedora wearing, stamp-collecting drunk uncle minority will still sit on the toilet hitting dislike, spamming "MAREY SUEEEEE" and "hur hur Jar Jar Abrams" like a bunch of morons. TFA couldn't make them happy, despite being directed and acted beautifully with some good concepts.. so in the words of Robert De Niro: "**** em!"

Never expect any Star Wars movie or trilogy to please everyone, particularly the fans who want 20,000 butt close ups of Boba Fett to satisfy their needs.

The Last Jedi is a far, far better movie than Attack of the Clones.. despite me not liking either that much. I have no doubt that TROS will be as good as it can be.
