    Warning: Sad story

When I was 15 my older brother got his truck stuck in the mud in our back yard. Well My dad had the idea of using a chain and a come along(it tightens the chain)around a light post to help pull the truck out.

Well I had a bad feeling about this idea. There was lots of water and where the truck was was also my dog we had let out and was on a chain to go to bathroom.

When we let go of that chain my dog jumped over the chain on the truck and he was instantly killed.

There was this electrical wire the chain cut into on the light post and when it was tightened I guess it had just cut through when we let go of it,

It was the saddest day for me. I loved that dog. His name was Motley. He was a pit bull. But as sad as it was he saved our lives from being electrocuted. My brother tried saving him by going to the cellar and shutting off power. But was too late

Twice, although I really only barely remember one since they both happened when I was really young. The first one was when I wasn't even a year old yet. I was "supposed" to be born in March (that's what my mom said the doctors told her), but ended being born in February. After my parents took me home, they said I couldn't keep food down and wouldn't eat; seeing as I was a preemie, I was already underweight. I don't know how long it was before they took me back to the hospital, but I ended up having to get a surgery done. I don't know the details, but it had something to do with food not being able to enter the stomach and they had to remove or open something; I still have a mark from where they operated.

The second one happened when I was around 5. My mom, sister, and I were in a car crash and I was sitting on the side that was hit (we had a green light, and the other guy ran a red one). All I really remember from it was looking down and seeing my hands covered in blood and the police/medics getting us out of the car (and my mom screaming at the other guy), luckily everyone lived through it.

When I was 6-8 or so, a cow in my uncle's barn "kicked" (probably more like "bumped") me backwards so that I stumbled into this poop-hole leading down to the huge manure cistern thing below the barn. Had I not shot my arms out right as I fell down the hole, catching myself, I would've gone straight through and drowned in 5 meters of... well, cow feces... Lucky break! My granddad hauled me out of the hole. (At another time, I fell into a different farmer's manure cistern, but that was only like a meter deep, so I manage to wade out of that...).

Then, at 14, I was kicked off the roof of the same uncle's barn by invisible evil samurais*, falling 6-7 meters. Luckily, I bounced off of a gutter-thingy half-way down the wall, which broke my fall even as I shattered it on my way down.

*I was practicing ninjutsu at the time and was playing ninjas with my cousin -- (this was in the late 80s and ninjas were HUGE at the time) -- and we were fighting supposedly evil samurai on the roof of this barn, for some reason. I literally took one too many steps backwards and stepped right off the roof... I don't much care for heights these days, nor.... manure cisterns, truth be told.

Yes. Just this year I overdosed on marijuana edibles, it almost killed me.

    Blast drugs.

Who's to say if it was near-death or not, but a couple of instances definitely stand out.

A few years ago, I was driving home after the temperature had dropped rapidly in the day leading to the first snow fall of the year. The snow had just started, so there wasn't any danger in that. But there was ice, which I was about to find out the hard way:
I was cruising along on a long straight away, country back road, so I was going around 45 mph. I suddenly noticed my truck feel "lighter" and then noticed I was drifting into the other lane of oncoming traffic and had no control (luckily no one was actually coming the other way -- dodged bullet #1) and the next thing I saw was a utility pole square in front of me. At this point I was just off the road and into the dirt, so I got some control back and was able to swerve, narrowly missing the pole head on (dodge #2).... but then I saw the house directly in front of me. Before I had a chance to think, the momentum of my drift/swerve had carried the tail end of my truck into the pole, which spun me around 180° and practically stopped me in my tracks. ( "dodge" #3)
The truck was totalled, but I was fine. Just a little sore from being bounced around, but otherwise not even a scratch. The image of that pole in my headlights, and then the house directly after that are burned into my mind. Even when something went so wrong by hitting that ice, I often think about how many things went right to keep me utterly unharmed.

The other was something that didn't happen to me, but one of those scary "what-ifs"....
When I was a kid, my grandfather would often take a weekend trip to our family camp, and many times he would bring me along. Once, he got into a bad accident on the way up; someone had run a red-light and T-boned his van from the passenger side. Since it was on the opposite side of him he was mostly okay, broken wrist and some cuts, but if I had been with him.... who knows.
He told me afterwards that he had almost asked me to go with him that time, but had decided not to at the last minute.

I hate to call you out if this is true, but... how many did you eat? It takes a ton of maryjane to OD on, I didn't even think it was possible with edibles.

Anyway, as to my own personal experiences:

    - A lot as a kid. I had a ton of neurological issues and asthma

    - Once while rappelling when I was about 14, I'd been put in my harness wrong, and flipped upside down. I had to hold myself in my harness while continuing the descent to the bottom of the cliff. Super scary stuff.

    - House right next to ours burned down once. It wasn't until there were pillars of flame outside of our living room, making it look like some Dante-esque nightmare, that we even realized. Not sure we almost died, but it was definitely terrifying.

@cawatrooper So, a bit about me...

I suffer from severe panic attacks and have a history of anxiety, depression, used to self harm a lot, plus I have learning difficulties and behavioural issues.

Anyways, I've smoked my fair share of weed over the years and never had a problem, in fact it used to calm me down quite a bit.

So it turns out for some people, digesting marijuana has very different effects than smoking the stuff.

Of course I just so happened to be one of those people, I ate two whole brownies and initially it felt great until about an hour later when I couldn't control my breathing and almost died of a heart failure.

I found out from the docs that I had taken way too much eds and that the dosage had reacted with my meds which were already in my system from that morning, plus it was obvious that my mental health was a major contributing factor.

So that's a basic summary of what happened, I can't remember every detail and tbh I don't want to.

Just to back this up. Not quite the same thing, but I was offered a cup of hashish-brewed tea once and with the first sip I could feel my throat swelling, so much so it affected my breathing. I didn't have another sip... I guess it was some sort of allergic reaction or something.

    Almost died 3 times.

First, I was about 2 years old. playing in the back yard with a ball while my dad was mowing the yard. We had a pool and my ball went in the pool (no fence around it as this was 1978). I got on the edge to get it and fell in. I floated face down all the way across. He dove in and toss me out and did cpr and such. Coughing up water and all that fun stuff.

Second time, senior in high school. Driving to out of town football game. On the way home I fell asleep while driving. I woke up about 30 seconds later doing 75 mph in the median. slammed on the brakes and got control of myself and calmed down. Get back on the road and 30 seconds later I go over a bridge.

Third time, I was diagnosed with West Nile. I passed out at work and started convulsing on the floor. Was in the hospital for 3 days.

    Ahh interesting.

Maryjane has always had a really potent (often negative) effect on me as well. I always figured it was because my tolerance was low, given how little I partake.

    Wonder if that's similar.

Anyway, sorry to make you recall that.

OK....military related.....I was coming back from a deployment overseas on a KC-135 tanker aircraft and got a chance to sit in the cockpit. We were coming in to Elmendorf AFB Alaska for a stopover on our way back to the states. The flight crew was pretty young (Lieutenants and Captains) and they were having trouble on the approach to landing due to severe crosswinds. It was really turbulent and I ended up looking straight down to the ground out of the pilots side windows due to the severe roll..! The crew decided to go around and when we were circling back for landing our Squadron Commander, A Lieutenant Colonel, with thousands of hours flight time, came up into the cockpit and sat with the pilot in the jumpseat, giving encouragement and lending experience to how to "crab" into the crosswind (flying to the runway with the nose at an angle into the wind).....they did great the second time and we landed safely......

It kinda odd talking about it when it feels like it happened to someone else now, but following the end of my marriage in 2011 I went into a huge spiral of decline and took some (now clearly) irrational steps which resulted in me hospitalising myself. With a lot of support from family, friends, counsellors and an amazing doctor I found my way back.
As I said, it feels like it was someone else who went through all that as life has moved on a lot - moving home 3 times since, 3 different jobs, remarried with mini Lazarus growing up happily, leaving almost everything of that other person behind. The Laz moniker couldn't be more appropriate.

Oh sure, happens all the time. There are many "close calls" over the years but there were two major things that almost killed me. The first did actually but I was revived, I had a semi crash into me when I was 19 and I barely survived. That was 20 years ago and some of the injuries cause me some issues from time to time but I got a nice settlement and a house out of it so I'm not too worried about it. The other time was about 10 years ago, I got food poisoning which my doctor just blew off as a stomach bug and it eventually grew into a bacterial infection in my stomach which led to me going into septic shock. Long story short I spent a week in the hospital, 3 days of it in the ICU, and in the beginning the doctors were only giving me a 50/50 shot at living. However nobody told me about this until after I was out of the hospital. I wondered why the chaplain came to talk to me one day, but not really being a religious person or knowing I might die I didn't solicit any spiritual aid from him and he just kind of shot the bull with me for a few minutes (mostly about how he was from Ireland) and then he left. I thought he was just bored.

On a side note there was another time when I was told I was going to die but it turned out I was actually fine. I can't even remember what I was in the hospital for, I think it might have been a shoulder surgery, and my doctor came by to tell me that I had gallstones. In fact he said my gallbladder was full of them so I was scheduled to have either the stones or the whole gallbladder removed, I can't even remember now. I wasn't in any pain but I go into the hospital, get put under and awake to find a nurse telling me that they weren't able to perform the surgery because my liver was swollen and that I had what looked like alcoholic hepatitis and I had about 6 months to live. Also they did a liver biopsy so I was in tremendous pain for a while, just getting out of bed was a 5 minute ordeal. I was a little confused too because I wasn't an alcoholic or even much of a drinker anymore. I drank my fair share and the other guy's in high school and college but not anything too serious and after that I would maybe have 1-2 beers every 1-2 weeks at a dinner or something. They gave me the number of a grief therapist and a specialist, I never called the therapist but I got into the doctor after about a week and he did some bloodwork and sent me for a sonogram of my liver/gallbladder. I went back for the results and the doctor is like "Not only is there nothing wrong with your liver but you don't even have any gallstones". Naturally I was relieved but I'd had unnecessary surgery, a chunk of my liver cut out and spent 2 weeks thinking I was going to die. I got another settlement for this one but it mostly covered the medical costs.

During a hike in my youth, I came within a centimeter from falling 800 feet off of a rock cliff. If I hadn't been able to regain my balance, it would have been a long drop.

Some years later, I'd recently purchased a 1971 Dodge Dart and I was traveling down a highway at around 55 to 60 mph and had one of the rear tires explode on me. I have no idea how I managed to stay in control of the car. Somehow, miraculously, the only casualties were a wooden fence post and the car's radiator.

Another time with that car, I was headed down the same highway and traffic suddenly stopped in front of me. With leaky, old brakes, there was no way I wasn't going to die horribly. There was a dirt driveway to the right and I just barely managed to avoid the car in front of me by skidding off the road sideways into the driveway.

I stopped driving the car shortly after that. I still have it. It's waiting to be restored to roadworthy condition. ;)

I almost drowned when I was 15 during a scuba diving.

    I definitely didn't like it.
