i have a theory about how the Emperor appears in TROS...

They look like they stumble upon the wreckage of a Death Star (or star destroyer...).

You can’t see Rey with a totally intact lightsaber when she’s standing on that hill. The pommel is sitting on her belt.

Regardless of whether she’s repaired the Anakin saber then or not, I think she’s going hunting for khyber crystals in order to make more lightsabers to train (and arm) more Jedi. That white thing in her right hand seen in the behind shot looks like one of those canisters from the tanks on Jedha in Rogue One. It’s white, and obviously a newer model, but still...

Where would you be able to find a lot of khyber crystals? In the wreckage of one of the Death Stars (or a star destroyer carrying khyber to Death Star 2).

It seems like an easy retcon for them to go looking for khyber crystals and find the remaining part of Palpatine living in one of the crystals left over from Death Star 2.

Rey is a scavenger, so part of me thinks this is her going through wreckage looking for a power source to get them off the planet (Resistance is in dire straits now) or make an attack on FO, or rebuild Jedi order.

That’s when they discover Palpatine waiting to reveal himself. Maybe he manipulated them into seeking out him so that he can possess or seduce Rey into his service (he’s always wanted a young, powerful apprentice like Maul).

Hope everyone had a nice 4th of July (except all you British {expletive deleted}). ;)

Here is some very appropriate crystal hunting music.

I like this theory. It makes sense Rey would try to get crystals from the Death Star, since she is a scavenger by nature. Also I do think the Kyber crystals will play some role in how Palpatine comes back, since they were revealed to be something more significant than just lightsaber crystals in Rogue One...

It would make sense, and I think the original crystal for Anakin's saber was destroyed in TLJ. I don't like the idea of Palpatine being attached to a crystal or possessing someone though, that's too LotR, Harry Potter, and Dark Empire like; and we know Sith can't become Force Ghosts. I think it's more likely Rey will get more visions like she had in TFA and Palpatine will feature heavily in them (maybe even flashbacks to the OT and PT). The crystals from the Death Star might be corrupted and only show her Dark Side stuff, like Palpatine's rise and Anakin and Ben's fall.

I can't imagine the remains of the Death Star haven't been picked clean of anything valuable. But I can't imagine why else they would be there either.

Which Death Star is it? 1st on Yavin IV, or 2nd on Endor's Forest Moon ?

The thought is that it is Death Star 2 since that is the one Palpatine was on and he is coming back in some form.

I don't think there went that much thought into that. Furthermore R1 also was inconsistent to ROTS. At the ending of ROTS the dish of the DS was already built, but in R1 you see how it gets set into place.

It's definitely the second DS in TROS. Anything else doesn't make much sense.
    1) DS1 was completely blown up, DS2 wasn't
    2) the Emperor's return only makes sense with the second DS
    3) in the TROS trailer we've seen a red planet and guess what: there is a red planet in ROTJ near by Endor and the DS2

Upon seeing the Death Star she thought, "so many quarter portions!"

It's possible that it was a miss by Lucasfilm but doubt it. Another thing is DS2 was 3 times larger than DS1. The one in the water doesn't look that big, I would just think the scale of DS2 would be a lot larger. Perhaps they go to both as in not finding what they are looking for, then go after the other one. We aren't working with much.

    First Death Star

    Second Death Star

^ Both look completely destroyed to me.

The one in IX seems like a deliberate history rewrite done for token fanboyism, nostalgia and self-congratulatory applause, very much like the unneccesary AT-AT walkers in TLJ.

I would be okay if the IX DS was an early unknown experimental "DS-X" that went wrong in testing, blew up and remnants crashed onto a planet that will be seen in IX. After "DS-X" was lost, the Empire ordered a replacement for DS-X, to be called DS1, the one in ANH. It would also explain why DS1 appeared to take 19 years from the end of Episode 3 to 4 to build, when a larger DS2 took a much much shorter time.

But on the second pic you see pieces flying onto the surface of Endor, while on the first you don't.

Tiny pieces. Not pieces big enough to look like those in the IX trailer.

I think it would be smart to say it was an experimental DS or one that WAS under construction and then blew up during testing ( or due to sabotage ), but I don't think they will go that route. I hate to say this, or maybe I don't, but I don't think they've put a whole lot of thought into this stuff in the ST. It would make sense to make it DS II, but I fear they are gonna say it was DSI.

As for the pieces and their size, I am 99.99999% sure that they wouldn't care about that in any way, shape or form. LOL

And, to tie this into the actual topic of crystal hunting, I wish they would. One of the major problems I have with the ST (and all of the new films except RO) is this obsession with inserting token fanboyism into the films. What I mean by that is this: the focus on the dice in both TLJ and Solo. The obsession with the "Skywalker lightsaber".

If I were JJ (and obviously I am not) I would have Rey wielding a new saber, or I'd have her go looking for a crystal to build her own saber. Have it be a blue blade if you must, but for the love of Pete have her build her own bloody saber. Unless, of course, they are gonna make her a clone of Anakin... ;)

A huge explosion does not mean large pieces did not survive. You realize the distance involved?

I think Rey has better and more important things to do than go on a quest for a new crystal or build a new saber from scratch. She can do that after the real work is done.

My thinking is Palpatine haunts the wreckage, and taunts Rey, or Palpatine in physical form is residing there, and final showdown Jedi vs. Sith.

Death Star II was twice the size, approx 100 miles wide according to the drawings.
    il_794xN.902809082_6jm6.jpg

PS: I know there's a lot of debate on the overall size but the 100 mile figure makes the most sense (and scale) IMO.
