Don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of the Original Trilogy (1977-83) movies. But I'm not blind to some of its faults. Yet, on many occasions, I have come across comments or article on how "perfect" the Original Trilogy is. Or that its movies are the ultimate expression of the saga as a whole. As much as I am a fan of the trilogy, I really find it hard to believe this. In fact, if someone was to say this about the Prequel Trilogy or the Sequel Trilogy, I would respond in the same manner.

I love the Original Trilogy. But I feel that it is not perfect or that all of its films are the best in the franchise. And this is why I feel they are overrated.

I wouldn't say they are overrated as much as they set the bar for what fans wanted when it came to story telling in the franchise. I grew up when the PT came out and my childhood was spent with everything related to the prequel trilogy. Where the storytelling falls short with the PT, the CGI was always something that appealed to me and got me really excited as a child. For me, the ST seems to try to capture the storytelling elements found in the OT while combining the visual elements we got in the PT due to advancements in things like CGI. Since we only have 7 and 8 to judge off of, my biggest issue is that the story doesn't necessarily flow quite like the OT did and that's my issue with it, but that could very well change after 9 comes out. I'm definitely not somebody who blindly praises the OT and thinks it does not have its issues (like weird CGI in the special editions, some very cheesy and goofy dialogue) but the OT still does the best job of telling a story that I'm always going back to and enjoying.

Ok, here are some complains the OT could face if it came out today:
    - Luke is a Gary Stu. He is farmboy, who (out of nowhere) could pilot a combat space craft and defeat trained professional pilots
    - Without a proper training in the force (and space combat) Luke could hit a target, that a veteran pilot with a target computer could not
    - This supposed trilogy is made without any real plan. Vader wasn't supposed to be Luke's father and Leia was retconned to be Luke's sister only in RotJ.
    - Leia kissed Luke in ESB and RotJ made them siblings. Ouch
    - Space Worm scene is stupid and pointless
    - The plan to save Han Solo from Jabba makes no sense
    - Lando is just some guy in RotJ. He lost most of his "sueve" characteristics
    - RotJ wasted Bobba Fett's character by not explaining his backstory and killing him off like some lame loser
    - Death Star? Again?
    - The Rebel fleet attacked the Death Star from the finished side, instead of attacking the unfinished one.
    - Ewoks are annoying and are designed to appeal to kids
    - A bunch of primitives with spears and stones could not possibly defeat a professional military force with lasers
    - The Emperor is a one-dimensional evil wizard. Where is his backstory?

That's just some of it. So yeah, the OT is far from perfect. It's just something you have to grow up with to truly appreciate.

I wouldn't say that the OT had "set the bar". I think the trilogy did a very good job in establishing both the franchise and its on-screen universe.

    They're definitely not perfect.

It was a series of good movies that were appreciated in their time. They appeal to a sense of justice and satisfaction, of drama and action.

They're fun, and there's just enough in them to make you think.

Plus, the special effects were revolutionary.

So yeah, these films definitely made their mark on Hollywood history, and of course many people still remember them fondly. And honestly, even today they're certainly not bad by any stretch of the imagination, and considering some stuff that came out around the same time that's truly a testament to their timelessness.

I think that, given several factors, these movies served to give movie-goers more than just a film to watch- they were an experience. This wasn't just something that you go to at the end of the day, watch, then go on with your life. It was a lifestyle, almost, a phenomenon that permeated culture from the Silver Screen to the produce aisle. Something that, honestly, I don't think I've personally felt since the Lord of the Rings trilogy came out (with the possible exception of opening night of The Force Awakens).

Now, note that this isn't really saying anything specific about the film's quality itself, but about the effect it has on people. So, was it overhyped?

I mean, it kinda had to be. The trilogy is amazing and I love it- but nothing can live up to the hype that fans have created for themselves with Star Wars, and I think some people are really paying the piper finally, now that their personal expectations and theories aren't being met.

You just kicked the hornets nest...though part of it is that people grew up with the OT, and have rose-tinted glasses when it comes it.

some of us are capable of objectivity you know. ; D

that said, the OT does set the essential themes of hope, the power of compassion, and the conquest of evil as its major touch points for the franchise; there's no getting around that.

I grew up with the OT, and FOR ME, its far from overrated. ANH is by far my favorite. I like the Prequels, RO, Solo and the Sequel Trilogy, but the OT will always be the Diamond Standard... for me that is... to each their own. Enjoy them as you will... hehe

The OT is a very good trilogy because none of the three are outright bad. And that's incredibly difficult to pull off.
It has one great film (ESB) one very good film (ANH) and one "this will do" film (ROTJ)

Toy Story, Indiana Jones, The Godfather, Star Wars OT, LOTR

    There's your trilogy Mount Rushmore + 1

There's no doubt we wouldn't be in this mess (I like the ST) though if it wasn't for the successful OT. Hell, Disney even looked past the prequels.

I'm not sure how "overrated" is defined. It seems to be one of those (many) words that no one really knows what it means, but they use it anyway. I can say that I like the OT quite a bit. I can understand someone not liking them. If we gauge the OT alongside the PT and the ST, I'd say that it's clear that there's a wild double-standard enjoyed by the OT. I think Jack hits the nail on the head in that respect. If the OT were released today, they wouldn't be anywhere near as beloved as they are. So if that's our measure of overrated, then I'd say they are overrated.

I think what made Star Wars OT what it is, is the special effects. That's pretty much it. They are so beloved because of, special effects at the time. It's like, Citizen Kane. I can see why that movie is acclaimed for what it did to cinematic tecnique. But as a movie? I don't particularly like it, to be honest. Star Wars on the other hand, I do like. But I recognize that the "magic" of the OT, was the magic of special effects that weren't seen on that scale before.

I'm not sure why you would say that, there's a fair amount of connection to both trilogies in the ST. I mean, Luke's entire reason for his antipathy with the Jedi in TLJ was because of what happened during the prequels. That's not just, not looking past, it's looking directly at them for a major character development.

We all know how insecure you are about the prequel trilogy, maybe one day you'll just be able to enjoy it without all this pointless PT vs OT stuff which seems to be your life's obsession.

As far as being revolutionary Star Wars firmly owns its place in history. However, if you asked me to watch one of the OT films vs. Raiders of the Lost Ark give me Indy every time. The films are fantastic, but they are dated compared to some of the stuff we see today.

Basing on how the ST is treated and micro dissected I would say yes.

For me they are still wonderful.

I grew up in the 70's so I guess that's one of the many reasons I love ANH.( I love the 70's Stormtroopers over the FO troopers... I love that 70s look/feel, and for me the special effects hold up today, ANH is magical I shake my head when youngins say VFx are out dated... go watch ESB youngin...) I was there when people were going crazy for ANH. Yes, if the OT was released today maybe it would not be so successful... with the toxic internet and all. I also can remember some were not thrilled with TESB when it was first released( Lando was a bit controversial way back then...). Over the years, (ESB) it became a fan favorite, to me its one of the greatest sequels ever made. ANH will forever be my favorite. I don't think any New Star Wars film can take that title. It was Lightening in a bottle. ANH is not overrated its simply the best. Maybe... RJ, or D&D will make something revolutionary... who knows...;)

Let’s just look at The Original SW on its own and I believe it’s vastly underrated these days. George Lucas created a universe and a world we never saw before and I think fans take that for granted. Darth Vader, Stormtroopers, Lightsabers, Millenium Falcon, Deathstar, Luke, Leia, Han, R2, C3PO, Chewy, X-Wings, Tie Fighters, Jawas, Sand People are original ideas created to introduce this galaxy that has stood for 40 years and still going.

You have to have one inventive imagination to think of all of this (with the help of Ralph McQuarrie) because it has opened so many avenues of storytelling for more movies, tv shows, etc.

I’m talking strictly that The Original SW is not overrated as I think fans take for granted how rich/deep this world he created looks.
