'"Endings are the thing that scare me the most,' admits J.J. Abrams" - The jokes write themselves.

But I'm glad he's still talking about this. Not that I ever think he had abandoned trying to do this since he first talked about it but it shows that this is really important to him and probably his #1 goal with this movie. It's what I'm most excited for.

Yeah, " "Endings are the thing that scare me the most,” admits J.J. Abrams " - this is actually an encouraging thing to read to me because I think lots of us have thought it about JJ, to some degree, and it shows some self-awareness.

In a very meta-way, this could be kind of like JJ 'becoming a Jedi' though - confronting his fears, and so growing as a director, writer and person. I can't wait to see how he and everyone else working on the film have come up with this cohesive ending!

The quote gives me some hope for TROS. He did well, with certain qualifications, with TFA and I liked his first ST reboot and MI stuff so I am willing to give it a shot. Depending on this next trailer I am thinking I might actually see TROS opening night.

This is going to be a very tall order to fill. But at least his intentions (I think) are oriented correctly.

Happy to see this article and Abrams referencing how this saga is one unified story. It should be. Thematically and narratively, this is one chain of cause-and-effect with thematic guidance along the way. There are certainly B-stories, C-stories, and further expositional nods here and there but the core of the film is that three-act structure formed by three three-act stories, made of three films that are each three-act stories. While many bemoan this as formula rather than creativity, these structures are present in all good storytelling and are simply there to guide the progression of the story, not wrestle the art from it. Abrams understands how this movie needs to feel unified with the previous 8 (yes, 8) movies and needs to resolve them like the last movement of a grand symphony. We should be able to watch these 9 movies from start to finish together in a marathon and feel like we are watching one grand story. If Abrams didn't recognize this or flippantly dismissed it as some fans have, then I'd be worried. For now, I remain cautiously excited about closing this chapter of our modern mythology while opening the next through the Mandolorian.

I have said all along that I will never understand this ‘tying up the 9 movies’ narrative that JJ keeps talking about.

I know I’m generalizing but a good portion of the fans who like the ST, didn’t like the PT. And another portion of the fanbase who like the 1-6 story don’t like the ST cause it ruins Anakin’s story.

It’s a strange time in that they are tying up a Saga for fans who all have their own canon at this point. I wish JJ would have focused on the ST story and tying that up in a satisfying (and just giving it a reason to be called 7,8,9) instead of trying to tie all 9 movies together.

The saga is one of the most popular pop culture phenomenons in the world. It spans nearly four decades and has three trilogies. It’s reasonable that different fans prefer one trilogy over others or some movies or others. That’s how fandom works.

I don’t really think the storywriters take much of these things into account when writing a story because they’re a couple of years ahead of the “current” state of the franchise anyways (ie. TRoS script was nearly completed right after TLJ released).

Also, good storytelling is self-contained, it doesn’t need to bend to the whims of the external world.

Every fan plants their tent pegs in different camps: OT, Prequels, ST, and EU/Legends, but we are all one SW family, For me my tent is planted in Prequels, ST, and Legends, but I still place a piece in OT. We all need eaxh other, I love meeting other fans who love different parts of the Saga than I do. No matter what, we are one SW family.

I’d agree with JJ if that were his motives, but I feel the ‘tying all 9 movies together’ is more about marketing than storytelling. The ‘End of Skywalker Saga’ is a brilliant marketing strategy because it gives the ultimate finality to any fans since 1977.

I just feel the Saga storytelling gets stunted when they try to tie things together. Leia being Luke’s sister in ROTJ despite smooching him in ESB. The introduction of Jango Fett and Little Boba in AOTC. Anakin building C3PO. And now bringing back Palpatine to bridge the 9 movies is risky.

‘I am your father’ was groundbreaking in 1980, but every revelation since feels like it’s trying to tie everything together too hard. I will say that the best parts of TLJ are the Rey/Kylo Force Skyping scenes as it was new, interesting and took the Saga in a whole new direction for once. Tying the Saga in TROS may mean going backwards in storytelling.

I enjoyed Force Skype between Kylo and Rey. As you said it was different and unique. I wasn’t as thrilled by Luke’s Force Projection, I would have preffered he was there in the flesh and struck down by Kylo. It would have then given Ben a trifecta slaying: Han, Snoke, and Luke. All three radically different; smuggler, Sith, and Jedi.

I definitely agree with you in regards to Rey and Kylo. Their dynamic and force bond are the best aspects of this trilogy and I really hope Abrams emphasizes it in TRoS.

I too have always been irked by the way the storywriters are using nostalgia to bring in SW fans while focusing on the new characters to reel in new fans.

It almost feels like the writers don’t have confidence in these new characters, as if they can’t stand on their own without a good dose of nostalgia added in. That’s a shame because they all have such intriguing backstories and personalities.

I think $$$ was sole reason the new characters never got top billing the way they should have in the ST. The bean counters were always saying that the OT characters will get more people to the theater. I can’t argue that point because Ford is a box office movie star, but he (TFA) and Luke (TLJ) and supposedly (in the original plsn) Leia in Episode 9 overshadowed the new characters. They essentially made Luke MIA in TFA and killed him in TLJ because he would overshadow anything Rey would accomplish in the Trilogy cause he could save the day.

I always thought that the OT characters should have been in cameos in Episode 7, pass the torch, and give them a great fanservice sendoff for the fans. Episode 8 and 9 should focus solely on the new characters and their story. Rey/Kylo had a cool story in TLJ yet the fandom was divided by Luke’s arc which will be debated forever. That’s the miscalculation by Disney with the ST as they sacrificed the new characters for alittle more box office $$$.

Just IMHO, but Star Wars has always come from a place of youth striking out against the dominant power of older figures. I think it is rooted in Lucas’ very personal history and spirit of independence. In my view it absolutely follows that the ST, as part of the Skywalker saga ‘Episode’ films should have been centred on younger characters. There will be plenty of opportunities to have new twists on the formula going forward, but even the ‘expectation-busting’ TLJ is actually remarkably faithful to the previous trilogies methodology of story-telling and how the characters interact - younger characters rebelling, even when they’re wrong, making their own mistakes, but also speaking truth to power, challenging authority and growing through striking out on their own.

Maybe Luke, Leia, Han got a lot of marketing, but that’s understandable. I don’t think their use in the actual films is all that over the top though.

I love that JJ is expressing a desire to tie the saga together, I’d be disappointed if he didn’t.

If this post makes no sense and you can’t work out who I’m agreeing with it’s because I’m not sure myself. Lol. I can see the points others are making... I guess I’m happy with how the films are I can see how it could have been done differently too. It’s a balancing act when you have existing characters and new characters.

Han, Leia and Luke were not suppose to be that big of parts in the ST. It was stated from the beginning they'd be cameos. It wasn't about them, per se but a part of it with the whole saga.

Mark Hamill said many years ago how GL told him he'd be a cameo and an Obi Wan type in the ST. Only thing that changed was he wasn't really an Obi Wan type character full on. But he was a cameo.

I respectfully disagree as Luke is not a cameo in TLJ. HE is the essential reason for the creation of Kylo Ren and gets explored in flashbacks. The Rey/Luke scenes are more about Luke than Rey. And he gets the be apart of the climax of the movie facing off against Kylo Ren. Compare that to Yoda in ESB as that is essentially a cameo as he is just a guide for Luke. The Yoda/Luke ESB training scenes are more about Luke’s development.

That sort of goes to my point in that TLJ talk will be forever debated about Luke’s arc. If he had a cameo, then more fans would focus on Kylo/Rey, but Luke’s portrayal is a huge reason why fans love or hate the movie.

Well in that cae Vader was a cameo in ANH. He only had 12 minutes of screentime.

You’re not giving context as the original movie of a new franchise is different than a sequel with established characters. The Original SW wasn’t about Vader as he was just a villain, and he morphed into a main character in ESB/ROTJ (eventually becoming the Chosen One in the Prequels). Luke was the main character of the OT, so his screentime in the ST is a much different analogy than Vader in ANH.
