RJ said in his SlashFilm interview a while back that he's only going to write and direct the first one, and then he's going to bring other writers and directors in for the other two. So he's basically going to play the same role the George Lucas did for the OT.

Also, while I'm here, I'll add that I actually would prefer the protagonist stay human. However, I'd love to see a really weird, and almost abstract looking villain. If anyone's seen Annihilation, then that's kind of along the lines I'm thinking of. I'm really tired of seeing white male human villains. Even something like Darth Nihilus would be a nice change.

Or a badass seductive manipulative sith witch. A type of Lumiya. Annihilation was good but I wonder if that would be a little too abstract for star wars?

That would actually be pretty damnationly cool, sir! I don't remember too much from the old Marvel SW comics I read to pieces in the 80s, but I sure remember Lumiya and her weird light-whip-thingamajig :)

Not to be a pessimist, but I’m going to curb my enthusiasm a bit. We fans on The Cantina can really dream big. Sith witches, Old Republic, etc. I would be overjoyed if RJ’s trilogy was centered on any of that, but the fact remains: Disney is not interested in the “old times” due to their lack of legal possession of KOTOR. If I were to bet money on what RJ’s trilogy actually will be about, it will probably be set in between III and IV or directly after VI, which are “hotspots” in storytelling, I’ve noticed.
Personally, I’d watch anything Star Wars. I may be the only one on this message board who was genuinely disheartened to hear GL’s “midichlorian” trilogy would never see the light of day.

You might be right here, Ghost of Obi Wan Kenobi. In all likelihood, RJ is going to create something spanking new for his trilogy. And that's a pretty cool thing too :)

That I would like to see. Disney should move this saga forwards without using the OT as a crutch. Many main characters in the ST are connected to an Original Trilogy character either as a fan (Rey is a Luke fan, Kylo is a Vader fan,) a relative (Poe Dameron,) a former co-worker (Holdo,) etc.
What Star Wars needs Rian to do is create a set of films that are not directly connected to familiar previous installments. I heard Jon Favrau’s show may be about Mandalore. This is a good first step. They really need to push it beyond that. That puzzling last scene in TLJ makes me wonder if this trilogy will be about Broom Boy & Pals learning the ways of the Force and becoming Force users separate from the Jedi Order? THAT I would like to see.

I think RJ's trilogy will be good because he is creating new characters with no baggage attached. he is a great filmmaker. I'm worried about the GoT show runners because expectation are very high for their films so I foresee disappointment.

I've watched GOT, all the season at least 3x already. I love the series. What I'm saying is before TLJ was released, most thought that RJ was going to make a great movie. Go back and read some of the threads b4 TLJ was released, all the praise for RJ:rolleyes:, but allot of those people were disappointed by the film afterwards. I think the same thing will happen with the GOT show runners because people are expecting it to be so good like GOT. Thats my opinion I could be dead wrong but its funny how allot of people were so hyped for TLJ and then after seeing it hated RJ to death.

And another one here. I'll almost always take something insanely original, even if not well constructed, over something that's technically good but unoriginal.

I would like to point out that ANH is probably the least original SW film ever released. It steals from everywhere -- SciFi, Fantasy, Western, Samurai stuff, be it books, comics, TV-shows, or movies -- and the story itself is a checklist tale mimicking fairy tales & heroic legends. It is completely unoriginal, but that doesn't mean it can't also be awesome; which is true for anything, really.

Example: The Rolling Stones, Clapton, and others revolutionized rock music in the 60s, a genre that was itself a whitewashed copy of Afro-American folk music, by re-infusing it with the original blues roots.

It is how you do, not what you do that matters. George Lucas, for instance, is one of the greatest copyists of all time!

I don't think that means it's unoriginal. He saw a bunch of disparate parts from culture and turned them into something seamless and new. That's originality.

Yes but people often site these same things as why newer things aren't original.
People let their nostalgia and biases impact their judgement on these things.

These guys seem good at guiding stories that are already established, The last two seasons of GOT have been a bit of a mess since they passed Martin's material. Maybe they won't be writing/creating this completely by themselves.

Which is a fault of the stories being a complete mess which is why Martin hasn't released his last book. He's written himself into a corner with a bajillion story threads to end. The cost of the show went up. They only had outlines to work with. They had to get creative with time to actually have things happen. If they followed the s1-4 formula we'd still be waiting on Dany to land in Westeros.

Whether it’s directed by the GoT boys or Rian Johnson, one way or another there will be another trilogy coming down the pipe once episode 9 is released to the public. Because of this inevitability, i thought it would be a nice mental exercise to speculate on what my ideal vision is for the fourth trilogy.

*I would love these next films to be set in the past. Like to the point that maybe technology such as spacecraft or blasters are noticeably worse, and the vernacular is less ‘earth, 2018’ and more timeless. Another reason to set it in the past is that the sith are extinct post- RoTJ. We’ll get to that in just a second

*instead of another rebellion vs empire conflict, the main villains should be the sith. And because it’s set far enough in the past, it can be pre-rule of two, so we can have multiple force users in conflict.

I’m going to steal from the EU and use the concept of the lost tribe of the sith. An isolated group of darksiders hidden in the most remote and desolate part of galaxy that trains relentlessly for the chance to destroy the Jedi order and retake the seat of power. I want them to be scary and vindictive like Khan in Star Trek II, waiting patiently for their opportunity to strike.

*I see the main protagonists as a pair of adventurous Padawans who enjoy exploring the galaxy and the listless number of old ruins and temples of both the Jedi order and the sith. They learn of a dark and ancient planet that exists on no maps, and travel there in the hopes of finding excitement and lost treasures. What they find instead is the lost tribe of the Sith, and the arrival of the Jedi causes their dark awakening....

*in terms of tone, I would prefer to move away from the Skywalker saga’s lighthearted and jokey style and come more in line with the Lord of the Rings’ epic fairytale. That’s not to say there wouldn’t be any jokes at all, but I would like to see a Star Wars trilogy with some real bite while still staying in the PG-13 range.

*I don’t want Lucasfilm to be afraid to use CGI in this next trilogy. The planets of Star Wars are supposed to be varied and unique, so I think moving away from always having earth-like terrain and incorporating more planets like Felucia would be really cool

*last but not least, because so much of what we know about Star Wars would be thrown out the window, it would be important to incorporate aliens we already know in the film as visual indicators that we’re still in the same galaxy far, far away. That would mean twi’leks, rodians, etc pretty much any species that that you’ve come to expect and love

Sounds cool but I would make a few key differences.

    1. Have it mature with its audience: it may be surprising to know that Judge Dredd started off as a comic in the Daily Star, though there were fascistic overtones, the tone and style of the comic was by and large similar to other comics of the 1970's such as Warlord, Action!, Commando and Battle. As 2000AD began to form and develop over the years, the comic readership grew older and they began to explore darker and grittier storylines with series like Button Man, Sinister/Dexter, Missionary Man and others.

Of course there was the #redpilled marketing campaign of the 1990's... I'm saying nothing.

    2. Use more physical props: this give it a sense of grounding.

    3. Explore other concepts of the force besides the Sith and the Jedi if they are to be included at all as this would serve to add depth to the galaxy. I have an idea of Windu having survived his fall and having began a book chronicling the fall of the Jedi order as well as his frustrations. This book is then subsequently picked up by a cult of militant light side force users who begin a crusade against anything even relating to what they see as belonging to the Dark side or otherwise heretical.

A tyrrany of the light is something that has not been explored before.
