The previously announced live action Star Wars television series now has its producer and writer, both coming in the form of Disney favorite Jon Favreau. The series will be found on Disney's upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service, which is slated to launch in 2019.

The official announcement was just posted over at StarWars.com. In addition to his impressive track record and body of work, Favreau is no stranger to Disney or Star Wars, so even at face-value it makes perfect sense. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy clearly shares those sentiments.

In light of recent backlash, in an effort to clearly express her intentions, there is no doubt Kathleen Kennedy made sure her statement stressed that Favreau will be writing and producing this show with a diverse group of writers and directors, in an effort to build and strengthen the company's talent base.

Favreau, perhaps in cliche fashion, but very-welcomed cliche fashion, explains his excitement about joining the creative forces in the Star Wars galaxy:

Last month Favreau tweeted this photo of him with Solo: A Star Wars Story director Ron Howard and writer Lawrence Kasdan.

The speculation wheels began churning once again, as Favreau had long been speculated as an eventual choice to helm a Star Wars story, but I don't think anyone had their finger on the pulse of him producing and writing a TV series!

Favreau has worked under the Disney umbrella for over a decade now, dating back to 2008's Iron Man! There is currently no release date for the series, but as we mentioned the initial launch for the Disney streaming service has been targeted for late 2019!

The upcoming Star Wars live action TV series is so money...and it doesn't even know it!

    Fantastic news.
I wouldn't be shocked if Filoni is eventually in as a writer/director.

I bet Jon only writes a few eps.

Maybe, but remember that they have multiple series in the works right now. They won't have all their eggs in one basket.

I was always under the impression that Filioni was going to concentrate on the animation shows while other people work with live action shows and movies? I believe the leaked Resistance show will be Filoni's next project?

I'm under the same impression. In my eyes, Filoni's heart lies with animation and with him, we can expect some great new animated series.

Can’t wait and it’s going to be live-action so much potential. Great producer too.

Is this the same one that was already announced, but they just got someone to produce? Or is this a separate series? Because the article never states that it's a new series on top of what has been announced.

Cool! I didn't expect an A-list filmmaker to helm this. I've always been on the fence when it comes to the idea of a live-action TV series, but I think the project is definitely in good hands. Now let's hope the budget will be huge.

Best news ever. Hope they give him the freedom to get away from all this Rebel/Empire and Resistance/FO stuff. Would love to see him get away from that old song and dance.

I'm happy for this guy considering the contribution he already made as Pre Vizsla in The Clone Wars.

Iger said that they have several shows 'in development' and I think this is one of those.

I love that publicity shot of Kennedy. “Hey Kathy, um, whatcha . . . whatcha lookin’ at there? Is it the future? I bet it’s the future. Ah, you’re such a dreamer.” :D

This is exciting! Favreau puts a lot of time, attention, and care into all of his projects. It feels like a good choice to me.

Great news! 2019 is going to be a hell of a year. New TV shows, the new Star Wars theme park & hotel and then Ep IX to cap it off!

Sorry to nit-pick but just wanted to point out that Favreau's Iron Man & Iron Man 2 were done through Paramount, not Disney. Disney bought up Marvel Studios right before the first Avengers movie.

2019 is pretty damn quick though if they are planning to launch it Breath of the Wild style along side the service. Would not hurt my feelings if they delayed this to give him more time to work. I would rather have to wait for something great another year rather than get a rushed product that I am stuck with forever.

Could be it's been in the works for a while and we're only now hearing about it.

If that is the case Jon is not really writing this thing in any meaningful manor being he has been hard at work on finishing up the Lion King reboot for Disney.
