The Godfather and The Godfather Part II

I hadn't seen them both since high school and just wow. Incredible works of film art. Worth all the hype they get.

Oh my word, absolutely. It does such a good job at not just continuing the story or rehashing the themes, but taking the original themes and expounding on them.

:D I watched this tonight too with my girlfriend who was seeing it for the first time. She didn't find it nearly as funny as most of us do but she really liked the look and atmosphere plus all the magic and the Three Storms, etc. It was a better fantasy/adventure to her than comedy.

I think the hardest she laughed was at this guy's sunglasses.

i still love this flick - but there’s no denying that if you’re coming at it fresh it today, it’ll really show its 35yr old age.
I’ve tried to get my daughter to watch it and several other 70s, 80s and 90s films, but she won’t have a dime of it. She just can’t relate. It seems that her generation - that have grown up with iPads, streaming services, YouTube and tiktok - are finding their stories, the timing and way they’re told, wholly different to us... probably just like our parents thought we did.

All that melancholy ageing thing aside, tonight I’m giving Archive a go... debut feature from Gavin Rothery (who was Art Dept lead on the frankly marvellous ’Moon’)

Watched it with my parents this evening. We're fans of the first movie, and this one didn't disappoint. Granted, I don't think either movie is of a high quality, but there's a certain level of beauty in that.

Coming 2 America takes place thirty years after the original movie. With enemies on his doorstep and his father mere days away from death, the dutiful son Prince Akeem must now look to himself for guidance as the new ruler of his country. Akeem has been blessed with three smart, beautiful daughters, but no son, something the throne requires. However, when Akeem finds out a drunken, vaguely consensual AT BEST* encounter has lead to a son, a chance for his kingdom's safety and future may still exist. So back to Queens Akeem goes!

This movie is in many ways ponders about the idea of history repeating itself. Both father and son have traveled to lands outside of their comfort zone and must adapt to survive. Both father and son meet the love of their life in these places, and most overcome societal pressures (from their own father) to fight for this love. But that's about where the similarities end. Coming 2 America is far more socially conscious than its predecessor, addressing the rampant sexism in the movie as well as the new social and political climate we're in now. (Trevor Noah's cameo is a hilarious bright spot and nice allusion to the 2020 presidential debates, since Trevor didn't have the long hair he's spouting in this back when the film was originally filming.)
The commentary isn't really deep, as it more or less centers around Akeem's character learning to realize that he's become more like his father than he'd like.
It's also more slapstick. While the first movie was comedic, I wouldn't necessarily categorize it as a comedy. It was a rom-com, hard focus on the "rom" aspect. This movie is much more comedic, with the romance happening in fewer scenes and over a far shorter period of time. This is mostly because the focus is on Akeem's struggle between being a good, traditional (yet hypocritical) king and being a good empathetic father.

Jermaine Fowler shines as Lavelle Johnson, and Leslie Jones' role as Mary is pretty stinkin' hilarious...outside of the vaguely consensual encounter of course.*

This movie also does a great job of incorporating aspects of Black Panther into its DNA. From Lavelle's hairstyle when he arrives to Mary's dress, little influences show up everywhere. The movie itself also works as a foil to Black Panther in a lot of ways. Maybe this is what Eric Killmonger's life could have looked like had he grown up in Wakanda instead of left in Oakland. Maybe Akeem was the sort of king T'Chaka should have become. (Although T'Chaka was apparently pretty forward thinking and liberal, given how much control and authority Shuri has over Wakandan culture and technology.)

Coming 2 America could also have used a bit of a longer runtime. Maybe this is personal preference, but I'm not really a fan of love stories that happen over a short period of time. It's not that the love is unbelievable , it's that I don't believe couple will truly have a "happy ever after" if they marry someone they don't fully know. Oh, and I don't find it that believable. The first movie happened over the course of a few weeks, which was short but understandable. This one happened over the course of around 8-10 days.

Ultimately, if you're a fan of the original, Black Panther, or The Lion King 2 (which this also feels similar to in some ways), then you'll enjoy this movie. I don't think it's better than the first quality-wise, but it certainly made me laugh so much harder far more frequently. One of my favorite scenes that crosses so many lines has to do with the General from Nexdooria, our main antagonist. We get a view of his country's military, and at one point we see him reading a children's story to some little boys. He finishes up and then goes to tell them to play...with live grenades and weapons. Because he may be raising children soldiers, but he's not going to let them skip story time!

I'd give this about a 7/10 or 7.5/10. (I'm giving out 7.5 a lot recently!) And I'd really like to see an official crossover between this series and Black Panther. No idea how, but it'd be great.

    POTENTIAL TRIGGER WARNING
*Mary convinces Akeem to take drugs and then proceeds to mount him. Akeem doesn't really fight back, but when recounting the event notes that he thought Mary was a wild animal that he was wrestling with in his drug addled mind, showing a lack of cognitive awareness; so I'm not sure consent was really given, if even understood. The movie treats it like a joke, with Lisa being a little mad that Akeem didn't tell her about an encounter he didn't remember having, leading to a child he didn't know about before they even met. Sure the joke can be funny, but the situation and treatment of it certainly aren't, and it was in bad taste to do it that way. That being said, I understand the reason why it was the case - Akeem was very straight-laced in the first movie. There wasn't really any other way for him to have a child outside of wedlock unless it came from a situation out of his control. He clearly didn't need money, so there wasn't a reason to retcon his situation into him having to...ah...donate some genetic material for future families, so retconning that way wasn't an option.

(Although she does have a right to be mad about Akeem inviting Mary and Lavelle to their house without prior warning, and then proclaiming the latter as his heir without telling any of his other family members.)

I like watching the Director's Commentary on movies I like...and movies I don't like but want to understand why. For this one, I wanted to understand how a franchise goes from a dual-lead movie to an ensemble (sort of), as well as how to run a heist for a different story I have planned. Some parts of the commentary were helpful, other parts weren't. But I learned some fun things about this movie in the process, and I'm glad I watched it.
Tomorrow I'll start 6, and hopefully 7 will have a Director's Commentary as well - my Blu-Ray copy didn't list it, and given Paul Walker's passing I can understand them not wanting to make one, but we'll see.

After that I'll finally start my Man of Steel and BvS: UE rewatch, just in time for Snyder's JL.
