Mulholland Drive and Shoplifters. Both are great but don't really have anything in common. The former one is mysterious, dreamy and very idiosyncratic while the latter is one of the best examples of social realism in recent cinema.

FINALLY finished TLJ with the Director's commentary. And like everything surrounding the movie, it did not go the way I think it was going to. I watched it so I could get a sense of RJ's headspace while he wrote the film, but there were only tantalizing morsels of that. It was mostly about how the movie was made - which made sense, given that he was the director after all - but as the writer too I expected that to pop up more than it did. It wasn't bad by any means. Rian's love for film was evident, as was his appreciation for the cast and crew. But that's not why I watched.

Overall, it was an enjoyable watch but I felt like Rey in the caves, looking for answers that I guess didn't really matter...

Hat Trick with three uninterrupted posts...?

Saw this movie last night. I have a lot of thoughts about it, but I actually REALLY enjoyed it (incredibly low expectations helped). There are a lot of criticisms in the movie, limited but not included to: too many new characters, convoluted plot, over-expanding, this being a set-up film, and how it doesn't feel like a Harry Potter film really. To me, all of these are actually strengths. I mean sure, Nicholas Flammel didn't really have to be in the movie, nor did Nagini (but she was beautiful), but I didn't mind that. I was game for the ride and enjoyed it all the way through. It's dark and grim and the ending really lives up to that, giving us a question we didn't really need and answering it in a very surprising way. My favorite character was Zoe Kravitz' Leta Lestrange, and we got too little of her in the movie.

I will say that due to this movie adding so many characters, the ones we know and love didn't really get fleshed out arcs. Oh, they got arcs all right, but they weren't the best nor were they fleshed out (looking at you, Queenie).

Overall, this movie is a set-up for the next flims and comfortably falls between Avengers Infinity War and The Last Jedi in terms of tone, timing, and theme. See it if you're a Harry Potter fan, don't if you're not.

Phantom Thread and oh my what a bore fest. I just dont get why the subject matter was at all interesting to someone. Kinda depressing that I believe this is Daniel Day Lewis last film. Sure he was excellent in it, but why was this made?

Watched this with my best friend tonight. I own the whole trilogy and have an unabashed love of Rurouni Kenshin, so it was delightful to watch it again. It was my friend's first time going through it, and he liked it. The movie has a great blend of romance, subtle tragedy (especially if you know the backstory), action, and cheesiness. It's also the best manga-to-live action adaptation that I've seen.

    Time for an update!
    • Chunking Express - very energetic, very romantic, great use of licensed songs, great filmmaking overall.
    • The Apartment - I have fallen head over heels for this film. Surprisingly timely with its exploration of themes of work in giant corporation and female agency in work romances, great acting by Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, fantastic writing. Also looked spectacularly when seen on a big cinema screen in a new $K restoration.
    • Sorry to Bother You - this is the radicalized cousin of The Apartment, one that is not constrained in any way when it comes to explortion of work for a huge company in an extremely capitalist society. Very brave, I'd have liked to see more Tessa Thompson in it, but it still is a good film. If some of you are interested in seeing more Lakeith Stanfield before Knives Out, this is a good place to start.
    • Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse - I'm not as amazed by it as the majority of the critics, but it is still very solid. Great animation and characters and a very positive message. Also - there is a cameo for the future that will get fans of a certain X-wing pilot very excited.

Free Solo is so much more than look at a guy who climbs high rock walls without a safety harness. It's a look at a history of a man, his dating life (this is actually more interesting than it sounds) and how his upbringing made him the man he is today and him pursue such a dangerous career. Check it out if you can. It's really good. :)

The Good The Bad The Weird.

This movie is pure entertainment. Even though the title makes this movie seem like a parody of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", it's not! It's a modern western with its own story and characters. You can call it more of a homage.

ROMA - A very special and unique film by Alfonso Cuaron. It's shot in a very classic cinema style. It's gorgeous. The production and sound design is astounding. All the praise it's getting is well deserved. However, it's such a deep and personal story and told for a culture I am not a part of so it left me feeling a bit distant, never able to fully engage. Normally this would sink a movie for me but the artistry and skill Cuaron is displaying here is awe-inspiring.

Best friend came over for the last time before the holidays and we knocked out two movies on our list.

The sequel to the Rurouni Kenshin movie above, and a great one at that (although the trilogy really works better when thought of as an intro movie plus a duology). My friend liked it! He thought the action, set pieces, and music were all great. Thought the acting got a little cheesy at times, but given this is the Japanese equivalent of a comicbook movie, I personally let that aspect slide.

This has been the Year of the Spider. Our beloved hero broke our hearts in Avengers Infinity War, was nominated for Game of the Year, and now has outclassed every other animated superhero movie of this generation.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse isn't just a great Spider-Man origin story, it's a SMART one. It recaps the origins of Peter Parker incredibly quickly for those who don't know and need to know fast, and for those who do know and are tired of it. It subverts expectations at times while still being fun and charming. It has true darkness in its veins, a fact known but not really appreciated when compared to other heroes like Batman.

But most importantly, this movie proves that superhero movies about legacy characters CAN WORK. Miles Morales despite all of his popularity is really only a child in terms of comicbook history (he came out in 2011-2012). Despite that, he's proven that a movie about legacy characters can work. We can see a movie about Robin stepping up to fill the shoes of Batman now*. We can see a Superboy* filling in Clark Kent's role. We can see the Avengers pass on their roles and not worry too much about how their legacies will be handled now.

This movie is a gamechanger. But before all of that, it's a great, heartfelt animated movie. Go out and see it. My best friend also ranked it the second best Spider-Man movie to date (Spider-Man 2 still wins).

*Which Robin you want to take the mantle I'll let you decide.
*Or both John Kent and Conner Kent.

Had a very similar reaction myself. It is a display of technical mastery but in terms of the story itself there was something that kept me from being fully engaged with the story.

I really think it has to do with your ability to relate and connect with the main characters. If you can't, then you will get that distance.
I want to give it some time and then watch it again.

Spider-Man Homecoming, especially enjoyed the scenes with Tony Stark and Peter Parker, I guess I could watch them for hours, no villain or plot needed - They are just too likeable.

So I finally cracked and saw the new Fantastic Beasts movie. What a slog.
Yates and Rowling need a break from the Potter-verse and let some fresh blood get in on this party in a bad way

Really thinking about this and how the rich world Rowling created 20+ years ago feels so flat now and it upsets me. There's a same-iness to it now. That's on having Yates do the last SIX Harry Potter movies. Then there's the writing which is just bad. Not because the ideas are inherently bad, but because Rowling isn't a screenwriter and is writing them like novels. So much is just trivial or trying to give people a pat on the back for remembering a moderately obscure name or place. Then there's tying everyone together with people from the HP films. It shrinks the universe. It's not a good thing. This is why expanding on Rey being no one (please don't reverse course) and Finn not being a Calrissian or Windu is important. It EXPANDS the universe.

It's basically Solo without the decency of being fun or at least trying to have fun.
Oh and where the hell are the beasts? This should have never been titled Fantastic Beasts. They are after thoughts at best. Just thrown in to justify the title.
Imagine if there were a Star Wars movie called: Origins of the Sith. Now also imagine that the Sith are just throw away side stories that have no ultimate bearing on the movie.
