As a huge fan of the character of Leia, the closer the film gets, the more worried I am about the scenes she is said to be in.

I know family have said the scenes do her justice, but I was just curious to see what other peoples thoughts and feelings were.

(Apologies if this has alrerady been discussed)

I'm one of those few people who would have accepted recasting, because story > actors. I still do hope they have a body double for Leia to hug her son. But other than that I'm excited how they will use Carrie Fisher's unused footage.

JJ will definitely do her justice.

    i heartily agree!

i don't know what Rami Malek was doing in Bohemian Rhapsody, but it was an earnest, well-intended performance and the band loved it (and let's face it, Freddie was peerless ~ no one was going to step into those shoes without suffering comparison). but if the band is happy, then i'm happy. likewise, if Carrie Fisher's family is happy with what they have done with Leia's final appearance then i'll be happy with it too.

i was a kvetcher about recasting Han and then loved Solo. the show must go on.
i'm looking forward to seeing her one more time and i believe they'll not only make it work, but she'll survive the ST. : D

How do you think they will leave it? Obviously she wont be there to see the Resitance to the end - whether they are victorious or not. I wonder if she will 'step down' as leader or something like that?

The Sopranos tried something like this, and most people agree the result was tacky and disrespectful. But I'm still holding onto hope that Star Wars can do better, especially after how well Rogue One turned out.

Episode IX is supposed to conclude the Skywalker storyline, and now they pretty much have to conclude Leia's story anyway. So I don't mean to sound negative, but I still think Leia is likely to die in IX.

I am on board with this too. I am not complaining about what they did because I think that was a valid solution as well, but I would not have minded if they recast the character.

I think they will do both Leia and Carrie right. JJ and Lucasfilm have too much respect for Carrie to do it poorly. I think that if it started to look like it wasn’t going to work they would have scrapped the idea

I'm 100% certain that Leia's scenes in Ep.9 are going to be great. For one, we know JJ shot a ton of stuff for TFA about Leia trying to convince the New Republic/Hosnian Prime people to join the Resistance and fight the First Order; this was originally going to establish Hosnian Prime prior to the First Order destroying the place. I assume the plan was to splice those scenes into the 1st act (going back and forth between the adventures of Finn, Poe, BB8, & Rey, the First Order fascism stuff, and Leia's politicking), but for pacing and length these scenes were cut pretty early on.

Reusing those scenes now -- possibly slightly tweaked with doctored lines etc -- probably along with some unused defense-of-D'Qar shots and segments as well ('cause it became important in Ep.9 for Rey to have the same hair and outfit, probably because she needs to fit her look with Leia at D'Qar), together with whatever LFL manages to wizard up with trick photography & CGI, is all going to be awesome and feel just right in Ep.9!

Now, we're probably going to get much less of Leia than what people hope for -- I for one hope for a LOT of her -- but nevertheless, I'm certain that what we do get will be swell. With all the love, skill, fearlessness, and resources of JJ & LFL behind it, there's no reason this wouldn't work.

I have faith in what they have planned for Leia. I think LucasFilm know and understand how important not this chapter of the story is but also how important this character is to the story and the fanbase. The last few years have seen highs and lows for Disney/Lucasfilm - I think they have learned much. Here's hoping!

I also think JJ had probably a lot of extra sequences with Carrie in film as she went through the process of getting back into acting and finding her footing with the character of Leia

This has been — and still is — my biggest concern for Episode IX. Carrie’s death really affected me, and after seeing how incredible she was in The Last Jedi, it just made me mad that she wasn’t going to be here for Episode IX. I was a little surprised, to be completely honest, when I heard she was coming back via unused footage in Episode IX. I’ve also heard rumors Colin Trevorrow stepped down from the project, partially because he couldn’t find a way to make his version of Episode IX work without Leia. JJ and Carrie’s family have both expressed confidence in this film’s ability to wrap up Leia’s story in a way that fits both the legacy of the character and actress.

Keeping this in mind, I think they’ll do a great job. They know what a huge undertaking it is to essentially revive one of the lead actors in a franchise as beloved as this one. I don’t see them messing it up. If you watch The Director and the Jedi, there’s a brief shot where you can see an alternate outfit for Leia that Carrie was wearing at some point. They can integrate that, and certainly whatever footage they have from The Force Awakens. (My understanding is JJ shot a lot of footage for that film that was cut, so the majority of what we get will likely be from that.)

There were some rumors that they were briefly returning to the place where they shot the Yavin IV scenes for Rogue One for Episode IX, which would make it easy to integrate Leia into any scenes taking place at the Resistance base. Any scene shot in front of a green screen could easily be altered. My only hope is that Leia gets to see her son come back to her. It would be amazing, even if they used a body double, for her to at least be alive to embrace Ben if and when he comes back to the light side. I want to see that more than anything else in Episode IX.

Regardless, I have total confidence that whatever it is they do with her character, it will be handled with the utmost respect for her. Everyone involved in the project knew Carrie and understood her importance to the fans. I think the chances of them really butchering it are very slim. Still, I’ll forever be disappointed that she couldn’t still be here to shoot Episode IX herself. She would’ve been amazing in it. (But she likely will be anyway, thanks to the footage they still have.)

Absolutely, but just think how it affected everybody at LFL, her family (who are ok-ing the use of her image & work), and everyone in the wings of the production.

We fans have seen Carrie on screen a bunch of times, and maybe even in real-life at some convention or other, but they... they KNEW her. We fans all cried and felt the gloom when Carrie died, but think how wrecked THEY were learning about this! Many of them were her friends, her close friends... some were even her family (by blood or by life-experience). And now they are working... dozens, probably hundreds of people directly... to bring our Princess back to life on the silver screen...

Of course it will. :) I mean, any scenario but complete love and devotion is unimaginable.

For all of you who gave me "Hopeful" marks above... it isn't hope! It is pretty much fact that the entire production and money-people and creative people and whathaveyou are ALL going to make Princess Leia's final appearance in the Skywalker Saga an absolute gem of a thing. Don't worry. It's gonna be tough seeing Carrie again, but it's also gonna be absolutely great; I promise.

100% agreed. I’m so grateful for the work they’re putting into making her a part of this film, because like you said, a lot of them were personally affected by her death, having worked with her for years, or being a part of her family. No matter how big or how small her role is, bringing her back for this film is no easy task, I’m sure, and I commend everyone who’s working to make that a possibility.

I’m positive this film will be incredibly emotional, particularly in how it deals with Carrie/Leia. But I know it’ll be worth it. It feels wrong to have the final film in the Skywalker saga not include her, so the fact that she will still be a part of it in some way leaves me with the same thing Leia always stood for — hope. :)

Remember, a good scene involving Leia does not imply we see Carrie's face all the scene long : a body double filmed from back, her voice, and from times to times, a brief picture of Carrie's face.
I'm sure one does not need more to tie it all.

I really think the last shot of the saga will be from Carrie. Pretty alive and holding the Skywalker lightsaber from old footage.
The screen goes black and we hear the lightsaber how it turns on. A sound that defines a generation. And then we cry, a lot.

why not @Madmartigan , but imho I just would want the lightsaber to turn off, as 1) Leia has never been a complete Jedi so she does not neeed to turn on this weapon, and 2) because the Saga should end in Balance and not start another fight.
But I agree with you, such a scene would nail it : Leia absolutely deserves to hold that Anakin's saber - hey, even Han hold it once!

Imagine if by touching the saber she could hear the voice of her mother or father saying how proud of her they are...(leia)(padme)(anakin 2)

That's cool. Turn off. The end. Good one.

In point 1), maybe she is holding the saber and she has her legacy in front of her, and we see her passing the weaphon. And when the screen goes black and we hear the lightsaber, we don't know who uses it, if Leia or the legacy. An ambiguous final always leaves you thoughtful, something to talk about during years.:p

Oh dear, the waiting is driving me crazy
