SPOILER Mandalorian S1E6

It's a 42 year Saga in the making. I am 42. Dark and Light know how many times I have enjoyed OT and all this new old vibe movies, from TFA, to Solo, and remember playing with my vintage toys (which still have all of them) since I have memory.

No doubt for me. TROS is the real excitement experience in cinema waiting. It's different from waiting Episode I cause I was younger. The only close excitement was like TFA, and it was an incredible journey to the past, like being child again.
Can't wait to see what J.J. brings to us. Total confindence from him.

I've talked on this before, but if you rewatch all the episodes, they all work on this karma like pattern of poetic justice. Those both rewarded and punished.

Though I think a nice karma for Mayfeld would have been getting dropped on his head for what he did to Babyoda.

Ch. 4 was your favorite? Mine too! Can you expound on why? I like it because it's the most character-driven of them all and that's my thing. That's why ch. 2 comes in second for me. (Yay, Rick Famuyiwa!)

 

Anybody else a bill burr fan that loves his character in the show? That Gungan line and " Did you guys make that?" Line had me dying. Also they're not dead so could totally come back and go after the mando.

 

I was kind of skeptical about how Bill Burr would play in this setting. But it actually worked pretty well! I loved the bit where Mando questioned Mayfield having been an Imperial sharpshooter, and he retorts "I wasn't a Stormtrooper, wiseass!"

Bringing in Clancy Brown as a Devaronian thug was fantastic casting. The man is 60 and can still deliver on a physical role like that??? Wow! And I guess in the process we learned that Devaronians are impervious to fire.

I was genuinely surprised to see the crew locked up in one of the cells at the end of the episode. I had fully expected Mando to take them all out. And then for Mando to place the beacon on Qin, and let the New Republic X-wings take out him and the station? The poetic justice was pretty great to see.

Mando seems to be in a pickle - his old underworld partners are clearly not to be trusted. And it seems that Mando is going to have to stay on the run while the Child remains as an active bounty. The tracking fobs that the bounty hunters have seem to be a curiosity - how does it actually work? Was some sort of chip implanted in the child?

 

I'm thinking that the crew being locked up in a cell together is going to be pretty severe punishment for them all in the long run. At least one of them is going to end up dead anyway...

How the tracking fobs work is a mystery, TBH.

 

On its own it was a good episode, again it felt a bit like I was a watching a slightly higher budget midseason episode of Stargate in the 90's.

The main issue with this show is with only 8 episodes their really needs to be more story than simply they go here they do this job, then onto the next job with not a great deal of connecting tissue and no real sense of purpose.

If I was a betting man I would say we arn't going to find out much about the Baby Yoda this season. We'll get a few more clues in the final episode but that will be it. At which point for me it will feel like the are dragging it out a bit.

Which is something I hate when TV shows do. Set up a mystery in an early episode, get the fans hooked in, then squeeze every last drop of intrest out of that mystery over season after season. This unfortunately seems to be the route the Mandalorian is going.

Hey it still fun to spend time in the star wars universe. I just wanted a bit more story.

 

The thing is, it COULD be that do a job per episode show and be great. But it's kind of just sitting here treading water with this MONSTER of a story looming over we haven't really touched or built on for 3 weeks now...and at a limited run of episodes....that's less than ideal.

 

So watched last night and really enjoyed the episode. Although it still concerns me that the season doesnt have much time left and seems to me so much story to tell. Felt it was much, much, much better the Episode 5. This episode looked like it cost as much as the episodes are supposed to cost.

As for excitement for TROS vs Mandalorian. TROS by orders of magnitude.

 

Yeah I guess thats it, If it was just a job per episode I think I'd be fine with that. All the episodes have been fine, if this was an old school 24 episode series like Stargate or Farscape then what they are doing would work perfectly.

But when you set something so massive up as Baby Yoda and only have 8 30-40 min episodes to deliver on that you can't help but feel a bit cheated when they don't really touch on it for 3 weeks.

They still have 2 episodes left, if they are both strong episodes that take there time to reveal the past and mysterious surround Baby Yoda then we will walk away all feeling satisfied. But if they do what so many TV do and don't really reveal that much in the last few episodes and drag it out into season 2 and beyond then I will feel quite short changed.

It's fine. The show is fine to me. A buddy of mine called it concept art in motion. And it really is.
There's nothing wrong with that.

 

Only real issue is how did Burg survive the 2nd door closing. Showing him in the prison cell later diminished the kill earlier on.

 

Not killing him is the point though. The Mandalorian of the "good old days" would no doubt have killed them because it was what they "deserved." But the Mandalorian has grown past that now. Or at least, he's a work in progress.

 

I see many shows with long plots arcing over an entire season that just aren't interesting enough. They focus on the larger story so much, that not enough happens on the individual episodes. I'd rather have more self contained episodes that advance the larger story occasionally. The Mandalorian is doing a great job of that in my opinion. I completely understand that he just doesn't know exactly what to do with the kid. He can't leave it anywhere and he hasn't been able to find a place to hide out, so he is just trying to make some money to keep them in food and fuel until a solution presents itself.

Also, is this the best kid ever? He hasn't cried one time yet, even after being dropped. I feel bad for anyone who does make him cry. Mando will probably disintegrate them.

I'm surprised no one has asked what the kid's name is, not even the mechanic.

Yup- his major character-turning, “crossroad point” was the “moving the throttle back down” scene in Episode/Chapter 3.

Babyoda (certainly among other things) -is absolutely representative (literally and symbolically) of the Mandalorian’s new life and commitment to a course of action.

 

Sure that's the point.. But that doesn't really answer his question...Burg should be dead unless there's a HUGE gap in those doors.

 

I assumed he was dead as well till the final scene. Great move on putting the tracker on the job. Loved seeing the X-Wings!!!

 

For a show many (without having seen it) touted as being "Star Wars for adults" or "dark and gritty" it really has a funny way of not actually being dark or gritty....


And yes, the tracker as Chekov's gun this week was a nice touch

 

@Jayardia Superb point! I think that amazing scene that closes out Ep 1, where Mando turns his head slightly at the sight of babyoda, and touches his finger, symbolizes the beginning of his metamorphosis away from the Mandalorian ways , to something else.....

It would be awesome if we could get Star Wars without profanity and sexual innuendos. That’s my only complaint on this episode.
