This question came up on some podcasts recently, and I love to hear what you all think.

Should the Kenobi story be a standalone film or a streaming series?

McGregor is no stranger to TV (please watch Fargo, it's excellent) and Disney has shown a willingness to put big-name actors/characters in their streaming shows (Cassian, Loki, etc).

I personally vote series. In my opinion, the Obi-Wan story is more of a character-driven piece. It's a bit too quiet for a film. But it could be the perfect tone for a series.

    What do you think?

i would totally dig a mini-series. like 6 or 10 episodes. that could be really cool. : D
i'd even tolerate the appearance of a young Luke on this. obviously Luke knew "old Ben Kenobi" existed.

I'd prefer a standalone movie, I'm not a fan streaming series in general, binge-watching can be fun, but nothing beats the experience of watching a SW movie in the movie theater.

Definitely movie, maybe even movies! I kinda dislike the today's consum of TV series. You have to binge watch it quite fast for not being spoiled and for being up to date. This isn't fun for me. Yeah, it may be nice to watch on your own couch or even bed with company. But nothing compares with the feeling of being in the cinema.

Exactly. Exactly! That feeling of being excited and kinda nervous before the movie starts. Simply awesome.

Totally get this. But I kinda feel like a Kenobi story would benefit from a quieter sort of story that might not pack the same big-screen punch. At least not for people expecting the same theater thrill-ride as the Saga films. I almost worry that, if they put Kenobi on the big screen, they'll be tempted to make it bigger than the story requires.

I can see where you're coming from, but to my mind big-screen punch and quiet driven movie don't have to contradict each other, not necessarily. I would love to see a character driven movie (with loads of flashbacks) focusing on the friendship between Obi-Wan and Anakin- rather than have it bloated into a 6 or 8 episodes event (sorry @FN-3263827 ;D btw. if there has got to be a version of Luke, than it's got to be standalone movie with Sebastian Stan - hahaha ) with filler material and distracting subplots that eventually waters the overall story down.

I kind of feel like this poll needs a "Neither" option - as in, I think Obi-Wan's story has been told perfectly and completely, and even though Ewan is an amazing actor, just cramming in a random extra story is unlikely to work out well.

But if I have to choose, I'm going with movie. I often find that comedy works better as a TV series, while drama and adventure work better as movies. When it comes to dramatic stories, the big moments are major changes, plot twists, etc. This just doesn't work well on a weekly basis. Either there aren't enough big moments and things get boring, or there are too many big moments and it feels like a soap opera.

With comedy, the "nothing ever changes" issue is a much smaller concern because the big moments are simply the jokes, and familiar characters can often be funny for many years.

This. I basically want a Logan movie which focuses much more on Kenobi and his past. You don't even need a villain for this movie. The deeds of the past (you've got a movie tite here ;D) are villainous enough.

Filler is something a lot of TV series seem to struggle with, especially SW. Just look at Resistance, Rebels or even Clone Wars. There are a lot of moments of filler and insignificance. These moments (sometimes even whole episodes) don't add anything to the overall story and are a waste of time. Something what the current Canon seems generally to struggle with. But I'm getting off-topic now...

Don't get me wrong, fillers can be good. For example Dragon Ball has great filler moments, but for the most parts filler suck.

i don't want something that drags on and on. i want a set mini-series with a definitive ending.
i get it: most tv is pretty bad, but when it's good it can be amazing.
i like the big splash of movies, but Star Wars is a longer-form serialization dreamboat. let it sail! : D

and i'm not crazy about Sebastian Stan, so i don't feel the need to go there ~ hahahaha

I get the "tv is bad" stigma but that's really changed recently. A defined miniseries doesn't need to have any filler if done well. Shows like Fargo, Legion, Stranger Things--a lot of tv nowadays is even higher-quality storytelling than big screen movies.

Initially I was disappointed when the plans for future Anthology movies were seemingly scrapped/postponed. But, the more I think about it, the more I'd prefer Kenobi to be a series. The longer format would give them more time to fully tell the story and flesh things out. Conversely, I suppose there is the risk of filler, but I'm not really worried about that personally, as I've always been a fan of the serial format and watching things unfold gradually.

Similar to Solo, I have seen some concerns about how a Kenobi movie/series would be unnecessary and/or that they've already focused so much on Obi-Wan's character and that there isn't anything left to tell. But if nothing else, I'd love to see Ewan McGregor in the role one more time, especially because he has expressed interest in returning.

Since my general belief is that content for Obi-Wan particularly for what people would perceive as a big budget movie would be difficult I believe that a Disney+ short series would be best. Obi-Wan content cant retcon OT canon. Obi-Wan went in isolation to simply protect and watch over Luke on Tatooine. Dont have much room for villians or for Obi-Wan to leave Tatooine. So would think content would be low key and rather cerebral in nature. Not your typical Star Wars content. Also believe the driving force is that people want to see Ewan as Obi-Wan again. That isnt a good reason to make a film/series.

I would still want them to have a compelling story to go with it. But, honestly, seeing Ewan McGregor again is probably the biggest draw for me.

I would take a Series over a movie any day. The story telling is much better unless it is a very contained and unique story.

I know it’s not likely to happen right now, but I would LOVE to see a Kenobi movie and for Ewan to reprise his roll. I know some people feel like his story was completely covered, but I want more.

Even if I have to watch it in a tv series instead of a movie.

I actually see it the other way around. IMO the story telling is much better in movies than in TV series. A lot of series suffer from filler material, boring events, characters, locations and most importantly series tend to expand the story unnecessarily long.
