The future of the Star Wars Saga appears to be set in its past, according to a new rumor, and it appears to be much bigger than a film trilogy, as the next major chapter may cover an entire era in and of itself. These new projects appear to be what Lucasfilm have hyped up as Project Luminous.

Two days ago, an article from Hungarian Star Wars fan site Ziro appeared concerning a series of rumors related to Project Luminous, which is set to be unveiled at some point this year (likely Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2020). Ziro's report on Project Luminous states that it is a multimedia effort that Lucasfilm has been developing for quite some time, set approximately 400 years before the events of the Skywalker Saga. (As such, don't expect this to be an adaptation of Knights of the Old Republic games, which are non-canon and are set thousands of years before the Skywalkers lived, although elements from them have made their way into the canon lore.) The overall concept connecting the Project Luminous stories are a group of Jedi that go out to explore the Unknown Regions of the galaxy, encountering three distinct types of enemies - the most dangerous of which are godlike Sith entities of some kind. Each Jedi will also have a specific set of Force-related skills that make them unique.

The writer's room for Project Luminous includes the likes of Claudia Gray, Justina Ireland, Daniel José Older, Cavan Scott, and Charles Soule, with others likely being involved in the multimedia project. Ziro also claim that while Project Luminous officially starts in 2020, the first effort related to it will be a new video game that will be released in 2021. Overall, the approach to the Project Luminous line will be more welcoming to interconnected storytelling reminiscent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe rather than the more standalone nature of the previous spin-offs, which had little connection to the sequel trilogy. Should the Project Luminous stories be successful, they will culminate in a crossover event that ties the various narratives together, much like The Avengers.

Yesterday, Making Star Wars has added even more context to these rumors. They claim that this era will be referred to as the era of the 'High Republic', the golden age of the galaxy far, far away when the Sith appeared to be gone for good and the Jedi helped ensure peace and justice for hundreds of generations. Darth Bane's Rule of Two is in full effect in secret, and Yoda is serving on the Jedi Council - though it remains to be seen if he will be involved with any Project Luminous story. MSW also makes an important note by saying that this first movie is the one that Game of Thrones alumni David Benioff and D. B. Weiss were developing, but it should proceed as planned without them. The movies in Project Luminous will not be a trilogy, but a series of stories that share certain characters and concepts.

We would also take a moment to reexamine a report of ours from last year - concerning Benioff and Weiss's planned Star Wars projects - and note that the 2022 movie is likely a part of Project Luminous based on what we heard from a source back in March 2019:

Originally, pre-production on this project may have started as soon as Autumn 2019. It appears as though these plans were in motion a while ago, but the underperformance of Solo: A Star Wars Story and the emergence of Disney+ likely caused plans to shift... to say nothing of Benioff and Weiss's decision to leave Star Wars after the backlash that they faced over the controversial ending to Game of Thrones. It's also possible that Rian Johnson's films may be set in this era as well, since those films were said to have connections to what Benioff and Weiss were planning to do. Now, Johnson may just end up working alongside a different creative.

It seems like this new era of stories can help establish what Star Wars can be when removed from most of the 'familiar' elements that have guided the property forward through most of the Disney-era. In the meantime, Lucasfilm will likely use Disney+ to develop the characters and worlds introduced in the Skywalker Saga and the first two spin-offs, along with other animated projects that will further tell new stories in familiar eras. Either way, it seems like the post-Skywalker Saga world will still be a fascinating one to explore.

The Old Republic style of the Protection and Defense lightsabers you can build at Galaxy's Edge made me think they eventually planned on spending a considerable amount of time in that era. I would prefer to go forward instead of back. I'd rather go into the complete unknown. The Old Republic has its own set of beloved characters and fans already with ideas about how everything should be. It's nice to read they've been spending a lot of time in the planning stages.

Intrigued... but also a tiny bit disappointed that we have to go backwards again. I'm more excited to see where the galaxy goes post-TROS

For me, this concept hinges on whether they can introduce compelling villains. We know that the Republic was established at this point, which makes Galactic scale conflict tricky, and they will need to have Dark Side Force users that aren't exactly like the Sith without the name. I don't mind small scale conflict, but it's hard to imagine that remaining interesting for a wide array of stories.

Let's wait some more and see. "Set in the Old Republic" could mean anything.

    Of course it's interesting.
In fact, I really don't care which era will mark the new Star Wars.
What I don't want is absurd dialogs, humor and continuous gags and an overused cgi non-sense fest like Marvel Universe (this is my biggest fear, in attempt to earn more money). I want serious and competent projects like Rogue One, I want serious castings (yes, like ST), not a bunch of guys having fun with cool suits, and I want a great combination of practical and computer effects like ST, Solo or RO.

I have enjoyed this new SW era, hope to see another "luminous project" from now on.

For the first time since 1977, people will walk into a SW movie knowing ZERO about it. And that will be special!!!!

    agreed.

they just finished off the saga.. anything they make that is set before it becomes a prequel of sorts.
400 years isn't far enough away from the Skywalker saga to stop the 'fan ownership/entitlement' that dogs us currently.

i'd prefer 10,000 years AFTER the saga, but if it has to be 400 years.. then have it 400 years post saga - when a certain little green fella that we've met recently could be in his pomp.

    Kinda torn on this.

As far as I can tell, it's a really sparse period of history in current canon.
    upload_2020-1-13_9-19-25.png

On one hand, that allows for a ton of freedom in telling an entirely new story, which could be a huge boon!

On the other, it could potentially be far too removed from what we know as being anchored in Star Wars, and fall flat as a generic sci-fi film. Even stuff like Resistance (set inside the era of the Skywalker saga) teetered dangerously close to this if not outright falling off, so it's absolutely possible. Lightsabers and starships aren't necessarily enough to make this Star Wars.

Obviously KOTOR succeeded here, but I think that's partly because of how comfortable the first game felt in Star Wars. I've often compared KOTOR 1 and 2 to TFA and TLJ, respectively- one is a classic nostalgic romp through the best parts of the series, the other is a contemplative deconstruction of it. The problem is, we've already gotten TFA. Can we really do another appeal to nostalgia again?

Personally, I think not. Whatever this film is, it needs to bank on selling us on its new era with its own merits. Which, if it had at least been set during the Jedi/Sith war or the Mandalorian Wars (even if not outright portraying KOTOR's events) it would've had some established elements. As is, it's just completely reliant on whatever it is on its own- and I hate to sound like such a downer, because regardless I'm still very hopeful that it'll be great.

I am sorta in that boat as well but with so many ways to go I just hope the put a lot of time into it so we can have an amazing experience. Would love to see a small story on Lando and his many capes.

I don't know if this is realistic, but my gut says we're in for a long hiatus. Could they push the premiere of an entirely new saga out to 2027 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the original? Not saying there couldn't be a standalone film, but given the perceived turmoil at LFL and Disney, it just seems like they're wanting to put on the brakes and figure out this property.
Honestly, to my old fashioned sensibilities Star Wars requires George Lucas, so anything that doesn't involve him or his ideas is missing the magic sauce. I've never felt this Blah about Star Wars films before. The TV shows, on the other hand...
