What are your thoughts on the idea that Finn would automatically be excluded from the story if he wasn't part of the Resistance? I ask because I've seen people say this elsewhere online and I don't agree with it.
The reason why I don't agree with it is because Finn has a history with the First Order which makes his fighting them significant on its own.
Also, to be honest, I think him fighting the First Order away from the authority of the Resistance and on his own terms is a lot interesting.
    Thoughts?

I think it's narrow minded thinking. Who are they to tell others what the story should be? They aren't interested in the Resistance. Have you heard any ideas or theories involving the Resistance in the last two years from any of these people who say that? Of course not, because they don't have any interest in the Resistance either. The problem is their thinking. They think just like Rian Johnson. They want to perceive Finn as a lesser character, so they come up with ideas that fit their fantasy, but that's not how this trilogy was set up. They are incapable of being unbiased. Nor can they come up with an idea that satisfies the masses.

Look what their ideas have created so far. Finn is now within the Resistance with no voice of his own, but we got Rose in the process. Isn't that better?
We got Rey who has no purpose except to fit more into the fantasy of those who wanted Finn's role lessened. Isn't that better?
We got Kylo front and center as the big bad guy. Even though they had to kill of two more powerful force users in the lamest of ways to do it. No one on one battles. No battles of the mind, or military strategic planning. Just a cop out. Isn't that better?
We already got their fantasy movie with TLJ, and look what it's done to the franchise. They should learn to be quiet, before we get anymore of their wishes.

They don't want Finn to take time away from Rey or Kylo. If he does that then he becomes too important to the overall story, and they can't have that. The story should have flowed through him. He has the most connections than any other character. With Finn at the core it gives characters such as Hux and Phasma some actual teeth instead of being standby flunkies. The fans would have been happy, because we would have explored more of Phasma, but fear of Finn destroyed any good ideas that could have been explored. I always believed Finn should be with the Resistance as an ally only. Not as a member. No one in their right mind would join an organization right after they ran away from another one. Especially since he was taken as a child. All this man knows is what someone has told him, and Rose comes along with her bull crap and does the very same thing. If he has beef with the FO, his beliefs shouldn't be the same as the Resistance. He has a perspective they don't have, and since he is a lead character I want his point of view explored over the Resistance. They are support to the main characters. Not the other way around.

I would like to add that these are alleged Finn fans we're talking about here.
Also, Finn was only an ally in TFA and it worked just fine. I don't see how him doing all the things he did as an ally means less than him doing it as a member. That's the impression I get when people argue these things. That they think Finn acting as an ally is somehow lesser than him being a member.

No, it's because he can't offer anything as an ally (besides FO intel in the last 2 films).

Finn has no ship, no credits (money), no resources and he's not a pilot.

Even with his FO intel, he needs the Resistance forces and resources to make use of it.

What could Finn do on his own?

What does that say about the Resistance? These bozos are so butt backwards that it took a janitor to save them, and have so little confidence in themselves that they spend an entire movie trying to recruit this janitor to help them fight the FO. Who looks worse?Finn or the group trying to recruit him?

    Finn.

Especially when it was just Rose 90% of the time and Poe 10% trying to recruit him.

That's just two people, not the whole Resistance.

if you think that's bad you should watch an old movie from 1977. a simple farmhand steps in to help 'the rebellion' (bit like the resistance from your movie) he saves the princess and blows up the space station that's threatening to blow up the planet.

if nobody can see the message from these movies that anyone and everyone is important and that anyone and everyone can make a difference.. then i don't know what to say lol.

you can attempt to devalue Finn by constantly using the term 'Janitor' if you like, but it'll start to look like you are demeaning Janitors.. which i'm sure wasn't the intent. He was a storm trooper.. programmed from birth. I know that he said he worked in sanitation.. but he wasn't doing that at the start of TFA now was he?

i encourage negative ratings for my post as i probably deserve it for the sarcasm alone lol

    :)

Do they feel that way about Rey? She is even less a part of the Resistance than Finn.
Considering the Resistance is basically a few people does it really matter?
And so you believe I am putting Finn down? Lol. I'm putting down Lucas films and everyone else involved with this project. We don't spend money on Star Wars movies to see Janitors become heroes, but since Lucas films didn't want to highlight any skills of Finn's except Sanitation duty that's what we got. Finn is the hero of this trilogy so far, and he should have skills that we all expect to see from our Star Wars heroes.

And as for your other comment. We already know anyone can make a difference. Finn did that in TFA, and it was more effective. We didn't need it in TLJ. Especially when it was bad.

Well, Rey has the Force. And she knows how to maintain and pilot the Falcon, so Leia essentially hands it to her and Chewie now works with her.

Rey can afford a lot more independence than Finn can right now.

Basically, right now she's Leia's ace in the hole, as a Jedi-in-training.

    Finn needs resources to matter.

That's okay. In OT, Luke needed Rebellion gear, X-wings and resources. Since all he had was the lightsaber Obi Wan gave him.

In the OT, it was HAN who could affford to be more independent since he had a ship, was a pilot, had chewie, had business resources, had contacts, etc

Finn is a good person. He is brave. He is loyal. He knows how the FO ships and their security work. He knows how to fight. He is able to learn from women, something Poe was having problems with. He is one of the most fun likeable characters in this trilogy. Boyega’s comic timing is impeccable.

It could have been. I mean... this could have been another and original arc.
Even tho I wouldn’t say “the authority of the Resistance”, because that is still a war.
And, with all the due respect, wars are generally made by armies and some space-neo-nazi
cannot be fight with flowers and love... only.. meaning you need an army.

But to explore something different... a 3rd way (and also a 3rd path that is not that of a Jedi
or a soldier, given that Rey and Poe are both there)... all I can say is interesting.

I'm pretty sure it's not meant to devalue janitors or Finn so much as it's a tongue in cheek reference to the way many fans see Finn because Lucasfilm themselves devalue him. Before the Awakening tells us that Finn was in fact 'not' programmed from birth as he resisted the programming, however he is a top-tier stormtrooper with exceptional skill. But the sad fact is that Lucasfilm chose to make his knowledge of Starkiller Base a product of his time working in sanitation in TFA and then they exacerbated the problem by then doubling down on the "janitor" joke in TLJ. While they did that they also failed to show his exceptional skills and results are the descriptors we see from many fans casual and non-casual alike.

It's very clear Finn is not the main character thus a supporting character for the main character which is Rey.

In the Last Jedi proves this, Finn did not have a big role or plot in the movie because he was only needed for TFA, to support the main character, which we seen when Kylo Ren struck down Finn, it pushed Rey to use the force and saber.

In 8 he was not needed because Luke Skywalker took his place with Rey the main character as the supporting character assisting Rey. The three main characters for 8 was Rey, Kylo Ren and Luke then below them was Snoke and Liea. Now RJ knew Finn was not a big part of this so he had do something for Finn that would not take away from the main story of Rey/Luke and Rey and Kylo. This is why you notice Finn fighting scene with Phasma was not even a min long because they could not make it better than the Throne Room Scene between Rey and Kylo and Snoke's guards was the main focus for the audience attention. Because Finn is not the main character thus his story was not cared for, they just gave him something to do. They should left Finn stayied in a coma and came out the coma at the end of the movie by Rey's touch, it would been a better story for him then that which RJ wrote. But I don't blame RJ no more, because RJ knew he was not the main character and neither was he the main focus of the movie so he tried to do something with him, that would not overshaddow or out do Rey's story.

In 9 Finn will have a smaller role this was why they used Finn to leak shoots of him with Poe knowing showing Finn does not give away the plot of the movie because it is not focused on him. This is the reality you guys who wants more of Finn it will not happen in this trilogy maybe in a future comic book.

They pose as Finn fans to hide their true intentions, which is to pretend he had development, and reduce him to Poe’s role in the force awakens, they’ll be happy if Poe’s in his place(like in tlj) that’s why they always mention Poe’s name before Finn when talking about the main characters, Finn always comes last to them, I am permanently heart broken about what happened to Finn, and from most of the recent rumors besides JJ saying Rey is with Finn again, it sounds like it will be the last Jedi all over again. But it will be wierd seeing Finn on the sidelines again with JJ as the director for ep 9, and it would like kinda “you know what” but then again “they” did a good job working together discreetly so far. Lol they tried so hard to bring down Finn they brought everything else down with them.

One thing I’m happy about is that they didn’t kick Finn out of the story and get what they wanted, they had a horrible story, since they begged Disney to make Finn a side character, now no one cares about Star Wars, and that’s what they get

This is what happens when there is an agenda. They were so blind from what they were pushing that they couldn't see it exposed more about them than anything else. Trying to push a female as an action star is a tough sell as it is, but purposely making the man weak in order to uplift the female character isn't going to work either. You would have to be incredibly stupid to believe otherwise. It may sound harsh, but female action stars do not sell. Even though it's Star Wars you still have to a good story and interesting characters. It doesn't matter how powerful Rey is. That's not enough to make her interesting. They could make her and Kylo the most powerful beings in the entire galaxy, and without them the galaxy would die, and I still wouldn't care.

I think it's safe to say, regardless of what they come up with for Finn in EPIX, it's going to be "less than" and it's going to be ultimately disappointing. Might as well just get all hearts and minds ready for it, so the impact of the blow doesn't land as hard. I thought this trilogy was going to really be something special for all the characters, but they really haven't demonstrated any creative genius at all (not just Rian, but the whole lot of them). If the most that Rian could imagine for TLJ was making Rey and Kylo the story, disfiguring Luke, and jettison Finn in to outer orbit - AND - if no one read the script and saw the problem with all this, they're just as complicit in all this as Rian. Arguably the most creative aspects of the trilogy came from the guy who gave us the worst movie. There's no reason to hope for any better in the final chapter. It's not going to satisfy, we already know it isn't, and so - if we're going to go see it, there's no need to go into it with anything but a sober perspective.

Finn is Resistance. Resistance is as faceless as the Storm Troopers. He will be Space Xander, and the only twist in the movie will be that they kill off Rey at the end (which will be yet another dumb move by LFL)

    Just my late night thoughts

This is, I would argue, the worst problem of the ST. There's zero creativity and no one seems in any way aware of this fact and thanks to all the "real fans" that sing the praises of any decision made, it doesn't seem like it's going to change any time soon. Well, them and all the journalists who for some reason feel the need to attack and lump in everyone that dare have a complaint, legitimate or otherwise as racists, sexists and whatever other label they can think of to elicit approval from whoever it is that they're seeking it from.
They're not killing Rey. Kathleen Kennedy is still in charge so there's no way the boss's pet character is getting anything but top priority. If there was a list somewhere with characters who could possibly be killed off, Rey's name wouldn't even be on it.

Then they'll probably kill off Finn or Poe.

On an aside, you know something that's always been funny to me? How often it was argued that Finn couldn't become FS in TLJ because of how abrupt it would be and how hard a turn it would be for his character and how the franchise needed to follow the OT archteype.

And then Rian came in, gave hard turns for almost all the characters, subverted everything, and those same folks were fine with it.

The only thing they are killing is this franchise. They are going to have to do something this country was never good at. Pulling itself up by it's bootstraps. There is no one else to blame, and no one to point a finger at. They are going to have to work at it, and I don't believe they are capable. They never had to before. The damage is far too great. Just mentioning certain characters now has me rolling my eyes. I don't have the stomach for them anymore.
