    As C-3PO asked in ANH, "R2-D2, where are you?"

    R2 did not appear in the teaser trailer, but a new droid apparently named Dio did.

    Could R2 be one of the so-called "MacGuffins" in this film?

    Long ago, it was said Lucas indicated R2 was the narrator relating the tale of Star Wars to a keeper of the Whills:

    Perhaps this is no longer the Story Group's plan, although I personally would prefer C-3PO and R2 to survive the Sequel Trilogy and at least have a more substantial contribution to this final installment of the Skywalker Saga.

    What do you think is going on? Will R2 have a decisive role? Will he make it through?

    R2 was already the MacGuffin in ANH. I think it's 3PO's time in TROS.

    IMO he's the most likely candidate on the "good side". But I would like to have TROS end with R2 and 3PO.

    A very good point.

    I love BB-8, but, to me, the OT droid pair was severely under-utilized in the ST, and, with R2 nowhere to be seen in the TRoS teaser, I'm somewhere between curious and concerned about what has happened, if anything, with that previously pivotal character.

    On another note, I would have liked to see C-3PO, R2-D2, and BB-8 share an adventure on their own. Each have unique personalities and capabilities, so that could have been very interesting - perhaps even to advance L3-37's cause to liberate subjugated droids and help establish equal rights for droids.

    The new Dio droid does seem cute and a potentially nice counterpart to BB-8, certainly unique in design as droids go.

    Since the presence of any new character necessarily takes up valuable minutes in a film of this magnitude, I hope there is some kind of balance struck that allows some basic development of this character's role in the story without relegating C-3PO, R2, and perhaps even BB-8 to reduced screen time.

    I believe the classic PT/OT droid duo do deserve respect and substantial arc completions in this final Skywalker saga film.

    An all-droid side quest in RoS would be fantastic! :D I doubt it would happen, but I so want this to come to pass :)

    That would be the cherry on top!

    While I agree with you, I also kinda love the idea of R2 "going rogue" on some secret mission and causing the Resistance heroes to go after him, setting off the chain of events in IX the same way that it happened in IV. Of course, swap Threepio with R2 and this still works for me.

    Yep, I recall (more than once) saying in the 80's and 90's that the story of Star Wars was actually being told from the memories and through the eyes of R2...would love to see that come out in the end.

    We also have to remember that while Bail Organa ordered 3PO's memory to be wiped, R2's (that we know of) was left intact...and he has the ENTIRE story in his archives, and I'd love for Kylo to have to be faced with some of those memories/holo-projections about who Anakin was, and some of the things he did...it could be sobering for him.

    Just please don't let JJ reprise the AOTC droid factory scene...

    On another note, and probably already stated in this thread, GL at one time said that R2 was the narrator to the Whills.

    One of the things I'm not crazy about with regard to ST is the lack of R2. My favorite SW character next to Darth Vader.

    I wouldn't mind a droid 'junk yard'. Even a droid factory would be fine, as long it's not done for lame laughs.

    I like to think that, if it’s true that R2-D2 is separate from the rest of the group in this film –– Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewie, C-3PO and BB-8 –– it’s possible that he’s been paired with Leia? We don’t exactly know what her role in The Rise of Skywalker is yet, but assuming she doesn’t die and they have her doing something that’s presumably largely off-screen, maybe she’ll take Artoo with her. It would be a nice callback to A New Hope being that when we’re first introduced to Leia, she’s with Artoo.

    Regardless, I really hope he gets his fair share of screentime. As much as I love the Sequel Trilogy, the lack of significant Artoo moments has been really disappointing. I love BB-8, but like others have said, there’s no reason why he can’t join Threepio and Artoo in their adventures, they’re different enough droids for the three of them to co-exist. I don’t like the idea that there’s only room for one prominent astromech droid.

    R2 is my favorite droid of the saga. I really miss him in the sequel trilogy. Why does J.J. hate R2D2 so much? But seriously, I agree that he is way underutilized. Anytime I see R2D2 in Star Wars, I get a big smile on my face.

    My very first Star Wars toy was R2. My mom was getting fitted for contact lenses and a store next door had Star Wars toys. That was the one I got. None of those places exist anymore, and the R2 toy has long since disappeared (it was 1977 after all), but my love for that little droid lingers. I too think he has been sadly underutilized in the ST.
