So I just had this horrible theory, and I wanted to get it out. But I think right now it might work.

Rey is the clone of Anakin Skywalker. Now this has been thrown out because Luke is the main character we all know and love, but I think Anakin is the better fit.

First, it gives us an explanation in-universe about why Anakin's Force Ghost hasn't shown up. Anakin's spirit/soul/whatever has been forcibly (heh) called back to the mortal plane. He can't be in two places at once, and so we haven't seen him yet.

Second, it lets the loophole about the chosen one make more sense. When Anakin died, he was supposed to have brought balance to the force. There are a couple of interpretations as to what that could mean. Did he bring balance by having a descendant on both sides of the Force (ala the Father, Son, and Daughter)? Was it literal? Or was only one part of the prophecy complete, when we assumed they would both be at the same time?

If Rey is Anakin's clone - and in a way Anakin reincarnated - then she could be the one finally bring balance to the force and Anakin's status as Chosen One isn't interrupted.

Third, it gives us slight catharsis about Anakin. Anakin never truly had a relationship with Leia. Rey does. Anakin never got to train Luke. Rey is trained by him to a degree. Anakin was let down by the Jedi order due to there corruption. Rey has all the building blocks to rectify those mistakes for the future Order.*

Fourth, it might make sense in-universe. Palpatine was ALWAYS on the search for more apprentices and secrets. It's not implausible that he would look into cloning Force Sensitive people. And as chancellor during a war, that might be an easier pill to swallow for his allies than during his reign as Emperor.

The timeline isn't too bad either. He gets Anakin's hand right after Geonosis, ships it off to Kamino, where they work on it as a side project during the war. They don't question the order, because why wouldn't the Jedi want to clone themselves?
After the war, Palps "shuts down" the facilities on Kamino. Or so it's said. In reality, he has them working towards cracking this one project. It takes them decades, and he's already dead by the time they solve it.

But then how does Rey get to Jakku? Well, there are a couple of ways this could have happened. First is that the "next of kin" could have been so horrified they took the girls and split them up in the galaxy, ala Luke and Leia.
Another possibility is that Rey was explicitly placed on Jakku in an attempt to make her more like the Skywalker men**raised in desolation, pretty much immediately open to leaving and becoming Jedi or any type of Force User in the original plan for Rey). This way gives me Justice League/Batman Beyond vibes. Adding to this, we know that Jakku has a connection to the Dark Side (assuming I'm remembering the Aftermath trilogy correctly), so leaving an empty vessel in an area connected to the Dark Side might help the transfer process (or whatever Palpatine is planning for Rey).

Overall, this is the theory. Feel free to add stuff or refute stuff at your own will! Enjoy!

*Although this does make Luke's attempts at the Jedi order feel redundant in a way, but alas...
**There is nothing wrong with Leia, but when this plan was set into motion, Palps most likely didn't know that Leia was Anakin's daughter. Nobody seemed to know until days before the attack at Endor. And even if he did know, Leia wasn't really open to the Force at the moment due to her background in politics (and Palps DEFINITELY wouldn't want to raise another Leia! That's like setting yourself up for failure!).

Why this notion that people want Rey to be a clone? Is it the multiple Rey scene? Also, like wouldn't Rey be ridiculously old by the time of TFA? Why wouldn't Palpy create multiple "Rey's" and take over the galaxy? She was dropped off on Jakku as a child.

...I mean, I DID say it was a horrible theory.

Just like with the Death Star's laser in Catalyst, it could be as simple as it took a long time to crack the code of getting a perfect clone (or two) that is stable and strong in the Force. So by the time Rey was "born," Palpatine was long gone.

The multiple Rey scene really didn't lend to my theory until you said so, so thanks lol! But it was more of the "Darth Rey" scene for me. Yes, I know it's more likely a vision, but healthy speculation is fun, and that's kind of what I'm in the mood for with this theory.

I think it could have absolutely worked if they’d chosen to go that route, but I don’t think they have.

@Andrew Waples , I don’t see what you mean about Rey’s age? Presumably the scenario would be: after many attempts, a clone is born and/or the cloner (Palpatine presumably) verifies with in-universe psudeo-science and/or dark Force magic that Rey is finally a clone who is Force sensitive enough to contain the spirit of Anakin, sucked back out of the Force, but with no memory of their previous lives. Then left on Jakku to toughen up with implanted memories of a family that don’t really exist.

I don’t think it is what has happened (for various reasons), but I think it was a possible route they could have taken, and it would have tied together a number of elements from the films such as the legacy of cloning, Sith manipulations of the Force/trying to cheat death and the prophecy of the chosen one, why we haven’t seen Force Ghost Anakin show up to tell Kylo to stop misbehaving... etc etc.

They could still use the reincarnation part without the clone part. It might be Kylo and Rey are actually Anakin’s soul split in two.

You cannot clone a Force-sensitive person and make their clone(s) be Force-sensitive.

This was established several weeks ago via Twitter by Pablo Hidalgo.

^ My response wasn't directed at you, but at the theory upon which this entire thread is predicated.

Rey cannot be a clone of any Force-sensitive person because you can't replicate Force-sensitivity, nullifying the point of cloning a Force-sensitive person in the first place.

Again, I don’t see why it’s not possible that clones could be made until one was naturally Force sensitive, wasn’t Pablo just saying you couldn’t make someone Force sensitive artificially, through a blood transfusion or whatever ? - and that could indeed extend to genetic manipulation as per established cloning tech - but there is so much wiggle-room in all of this.

We have all these possible factors at least:

    Cloning in general (Ep II)
    Genetic manipulation (Ep II)
Natural Force sensitivity (... whole saga... broom boy... )
Midi-chlorian manipulations (Tale of Darth Plagueis the Wise, Ep III)
Force manipulations by Sith/darksiders/Nightsister Magick (Ep III, The Clone Wars)
Possible new ‘retcons’ that contravene what Pablo said anyway (!)
The Force acting itself under its own agency (e.g. Force Ghosts, but not limited to)

IMHO you just cannot rule anything out until they do in the canon movies etc on this issue. There is more latitude to explain these inter-related aspects of the Force and cloning tech and living beings than a reductive reading of some tweets would impose.

Even though again, I don’t think Rey will be a clone. But I think she could be, that’s all. :)

Because Force-sensitivity is not something you can control.

There were 10,000 members of the Jedi Order by the time of the fall of the Old Republic, which was a "drop in a bucket" compared to the overall population of the galaxy; trying to clone a Force-sensitive person until you ended up with a clone who was "naturally" Force-sensitive would be a literal "crapshoot" that could take years and years and millions upon millions of credits with zero guarantee of success.

Yes. So years and years like it has been since ROTJ (let alone the prequels depending when the plan/research might have started in secret), and millions upon millions of credits like wot The Emperor could have easily squirrelled away, and with zero guarantee of success but orchestrated by a dark wizard with a penchant for messing with stuff he shouldn’t that could possibly stack the odds, even if he couldn’t guarantee anything... ;)

So I still see no reason why it couldn’t be possible. :)

^ This "clone Rey" thing is starting to turn into another "Rey Solo/Rey Skywalker" situation where people will continue to insist that their theories are "possible" despite the Canon - and those responsible for creating the Canon - firmly stating and establishing otherwise.

    * sigh *

You still haven’t established why it isn’t possible though. *shrug*

Actually, I did (repeatedly). It's not possible for Rey to be a clone because she is Force-sensitive and you can't scientifically replicate, control, or manipulate Force-sensitivity as per Pablo Hidalgo.

A clone of a Force-sensitive person is no more likely to be Force-sensitive than any other random person in the galaxy.

Rey being a clone would serve zero narrative purpose since the only valid narrative motivation for her being a clone has been unequivocally ruled out by default.

OK, we’re going round in circles here. I think we’ve established I think it’s possible, and you don’t because of tweets that you think confirm your position but I do not. It will probably turn out to be academic anyway. :) MTFBWY.

I would steer clear of dude. He thinks Pablo is some kind of important person. If JJ wants Rey to be a clone, she will be. JJ isn't taking orders from Pablo lol lol

Also, if force sensitivity is a family trait (you know, the whole thing the saga is based on), it makes sense a clone of Luke (or whoever) would be force sensitive.

The guy you are debating just doesn't like the idea, so he consistently references some tweet that Pablo has that doesn't even directly refute your theory.

The movies are the priority with regards to canon- not tweets by Pablo. Even Pablo himself has said this.

In the old EU, cloning a jedi was possible but it hasn't been established in the post EU to Legacy change. I do believe, as @DigificWriter is stating, Pablo said you couldn't do a blood transfusion to acquire force sensitivity. Blood transfusion and cloning would be two different things. I think the essence of what Pablo is saying that you wouldn't clone for for sensitivity but it Doesn't mean it cannot be made into new cannon if they wanted.

I personally do not believe Rey is a clone of Luke, Anakin, or Palpatine. According the Merrian-Webster dictionary, a clone would be an exact copy genetically. Males and females have genetically different DNA, so if Rey is a clone it isn't of a male. She could be "designed" like the Indominus Rex containing DNA parts of others but she wouldn't be a clone then. I also think being able to clone force sensitivity opens a can of worms. They made a clone army, wouldn't would stop someone from making a Jedi/Sith clone army. Kinda blows up from there.

Well, we have seen the new so-called 'Sith Troopers' right? What if they were all 'failed' clones, the non(or much less)-Force-sensitive clones before Rey was the one where they got it right? ;) Imagine they all take their helmets off and it's thousands of Reys (and/or Kylos!)!:D:p

Also, remember the clone army of the prequel era were modified already - to grow more quickly and be more obedient. Changing those kind of personality characteristics is, it seems to me, likely much more complicated than whether they'd be male or female, which is essentially a flip of a switch at the right moment.

So the clones of the prequels were not exact copies genetically, AOTC directly addresses that point, as Jango Fett wanted one "unaltered clone for himself" (Boba) as part of the deal. So I think Rey could be a female clone of a male person (in theory), if she was a clone.

Anway, I'm just speculating. Fun times! :)

Gonna be honest, that's kinda what I'd hope to see in a Sequel Sequel trilogy or another series. We've had Jedi versus Sith, but if the EU has taught us anything, it's that the Force isn't beholden to that binary. That's what was originally so exciting about the Knights of Ren. They were dark-siders like the Dathomir Witches, but weren't Sith. I want to see large scale actions between multiple Force groups, and cloning is an easy way to do that.

OOOHHH, GREAT idea about the Sith Troopers! That would make heck of a lot more sense, knowing that now!

People choosing to "selectively ignore" statements by individuals directly involved with the ongoing development of the SW franchise is what led to the divisiveness that currently plagues the SW fandom in the lead-up to and aftermath of The Last Jedi.

You think so? I think it’s more about people being horrible to each other and not accepting we are allowed different opinions. I respect your right to interpret Pablo’s tweets how you do, but I disagree with your interpretation. I’d still buy you a drink and chat Star Wars if i met you in real life though. :)
